Description

Patented Nov. 27, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH EIHORN. or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
rnuss.
Application .filed March 9,1922; Serial No. 542,397.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOSEPH EIHoRN, citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tosurgical appliances and has special reference to trusses.
The principal and most important object of the invention isthe provision of an improved form of truss wherein no hard or metallic parts will in any way come in contact with the body of the wearer.
A second very important object of the in vention is to provide an improved form of truss wherein there is provided a novel and eflicient adjusting device.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combina tions of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete truss, the view being taken from the front side thereof.
Figure 2 is a rear view of a portion of the truss showing the covering for the adjusting device opened and turned back.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail of the book of the belt adjusting device.
Figure 5 is a view showing one of the leg strap engaging buttons.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fi ure 5.
n the embodiment of the invention herein shown there is provided a body belt which is made in two sections 10 and 11. Each of these sections has a body 12 of leather or other like material which is preferably stifi enough to retain its shape against any tendency to wrinkle. Thi body 12 is covered by some suitable soft material such as suede or chamois leather such as is indicated at 13. An outer strip 14 is also applied to the body, the cover, outer strip and body being held together by suitable stitching 15. At the front end of the part 10 the heavier interior leather projects out of its covering as-at 16 and isprovided with two or three eyelets 17. At the other end the eyelets 18 engage through all the thicknesses of the belt and are more in number to allow an ampie latitude of adjustment.
Onthefront end of-the member 12 is arranged a hook 19 to engage in a selected.
eyelet 17, said hook being so positioned as not to contact with the body of the wearer when the device is in use. To the other extremity of the inner part of the member 11 is secured one end of an elastic web 20 which carries at its free end a hook 21 engageable in aselected eyelet 18. At this extremity of said inember 11 the outer leather 14 terminates-short of the end of the soft covering 13 and the adjacent edges of this covering are thus left free to be folded back from the web 20 as shown in Figure 2. This covering thus extends beyond the body of the member 11 and is of such length that it may be caused to enclose the web 20, hook 21 and the eyelet provided rear end of the member 10. In order to hold this cover over these parts, the edges of the cover strip are provided with eyelets 22 to receive a lacing 23. With this arrangement the parts at the rear of the wearer which might abrade the skin or tear the clothes are completely housed in.
The device is provided with one or more pads 23 covered with soft leather and held in position by fastenings 2a which are on the exterior of the pads so as not to contact with the wearer. From these pads extend the usual leg straps 25 which are provided at their free ends with spaced button holes 26 so that their ends may be engaged over buttons 27 secured on the exterior of the body belt.
The circumference of the belt is adjusted to suit the wearer by means of the back adjustment after which the truss is worn in the usual manner. 1
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purposes specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
closure is provided for the open end of the,
tubular bolt member 11.
With iny improvements,-the tubular member not only has universally movabl e'connection with the outer boiler sheet and with the fixed bolt member, but accessmay be readily had to the interior of the tubular bolt member for inspection purposes and also for the insertion of a tool Wherewith to manipulate the bolt member 4,the lat ter being provided with a kerf 40 to receive such tool.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination .of a staybolt comprising a tubular member open at one end and having a rounded head at its open end and a member provided with a rounded head at one end mounted in one end of said tubular member and having a threaded portion at its other end, and removable closure means for the outer end of the tubular bolt member.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with an outer boiler sheet having an opening provided with a transversely curved wall portion, and an inner boiler sheet, oi a bolt member secured to said inner boiler sheet and provided with a rounded head, a tubular bolt member receiving said ravaava rounded head and having a bearing within the same for said head, said tubular bolt member having a head at its outer end pro- .staybolt" member receiving said rounded head and having a bearing therefor at'its inner end portion, the outer end portion of the tubular bolt member being open and provided with a head having a rounded portion engaging the rounded wall portion of the opening in the outer boiler sheet, a disk welded in the opening of the outer, boiler sheet and having an internally threaded boss entering the; open end of the tubular bolt member, and an externally threaded closure entering said boss. 7 4
4. In a staybolt structure, the combination with an outer boiler sheet having an opening, and an inner boiler sheet, of a staybolt comprising a tubular member open at its outer end and having a part mounted on the wall of the opening in the outer boiler sheet and a member having a rounded head mounted in the inner end of said tubular member and rigidly secured to the inner boiler sheet, and closure means over the open outer end of the tubular bolt member and connected with the outer boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this ETHAN I. DODDS.
