LEGGINGS.
Application filed November 15, 1927. Serial No. 233,342.
through, and a suitable lacing or other fas-A tening means is provided for contracting such leg portions to closely bind the saine on the leg of the wearer and draw the edges of said openings together.
It is the primary object and purpose of my present inventionvto provide leggings of the above character which are so constructed as to' readily admit of the insertion of the foot longitudinally therethrough, but are not provided with the open sides and fastening means therefore, while at the same time such leg portions will snugly fit the legs of the wearer and present a neat appearance.
It is also another object of the invention to provide childrens leggings as above characterized which are durable and wear resisting, and capable of manufacture at comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the improved leggings and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts thereof as Will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the laccompanying drawings and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing, wherein I have disclosed one simple and practical embodiment of the invention, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,-.- u
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one practical embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale of one of the le portions of the device, a part thereof being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section view taken on the line 3 3 of F ig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a detailrvertical section taken on the line 4 4 ofFig. 2.
Referring inl detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body portion of the device having the two leg extensions generally indicated at 6. This article is formedfrom a more or less closely woven material Aand may be fleece or wool lined. The body 5 at the waist line is provided with a draw string orY other suitable means indicated at 7 for constricting the same upon the body of the wearer above the hips and thereby snugly holding the upper body portion of the article against' sagging. Each of the leg portions 6 at its lower end terminates in the usual forward extension S which overlies the shoe upper,
and an elastic strap y9 is'attached `at its ends to the opposite side edges of this lower end of the leg portion to extend under the instep of the shoe. l s
Each of the leg portions 6 at its inner side has a longitudinally extending cut-out 10. In the space thus provided a relatively elastic material indicated at 11 is inserted and` stitched as at 12 along its edges to said leg portions of the article. Preferably, the elastic fabric material 11 is cut into suitable length and shape and then folded centrally upon'itself as indicated at 13 so that there is a double thickness of such material extendv.ing the full length of the cut-outJ 11. The
weave of this fabric material l1 is such that it may not be Vstretched or distended to any great extent lengthwise thereof while on the other hand, it will freely give or stretch to a considerable extent across the width thereof, thus permitting of the expansion of the leg of the article under the pressure of the foot when it is'inserted therethrough.
lIn order to hold the lower edge of the foot portion in close contact upon the shoe,
I provide an elastic strap 14C which is arranged within the fold 13 of the material l1 and extends therethrough, the ends of said' strap being secured at each'side of the cutout 10 to the leg portion by thel stitching indicated at l5 which secures a reinforcing binding to the lower end edge of the leg 6. It will thus be seen that this elastic strap 14 is entirely concealed from view and insures the return of the lowerf'edge portion of the leg to its normal form after the expansion of the material 11 so that this lower edge at opposite sides of the leg will be held v in snug or close contact upon the shoe.
' Along the outer side of each leg portion.
6 a longitudinal row of suitablyspaced buttons 1,6V is secured. lThese buttons however, are ,used purely fory ornamental urposes, and if desiredmay be omitted. lso, a suitable braid or other ornamentation may be substituted therefor.
lio
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of my invention Will be clearly understood. lt will be seen that the means which I provide for the expansion and contraction of the leg portions of the article is entirely automatic in its action, Vand the usual lacing or other manually manipulable fastening means for closing up the leg portions of the leggings at their outer sides which has heretofore been commonly employed is altogether omitted. Owing to such omission of the fastening means, it is possible to produce my improved article at much lower manufacturing cost. Likewise, as these mechanical fastening devices are liable to become broken, it Will be apparent that leggings embodying my present improvements will be neater in appearance and also of greater durability than the prior art devices. l
lVhile I have herein shown and described an embodiment of the invention which l. have found to be entirely satisfactory in practical use forthe purpose in View, it is nevertheless to be understood that the Aessential features thereof might also be embodied in various other alternative structures, and i accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein asma-y be fairly incorporated Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim An article of the character described having an expansible leg enclosing portion of thereof and attached at its ends to the lower edge oflsaid leg portion and acting independently of said inserted elastic material to yicldingly resist expansion of said leg portion at the lower ec ge thereof.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I `have signedmy name hereto,
HENRY C. GRELICH.
