Description
Dec. 28 1926.
w. o. WELLS GLOVE AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. 15. 1926 F/GZ [raven/24oz MAL/AM O. WELLS 7 ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
STATES WILLIAM O. WELLS, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
GLOVE AND THE LIKE.
Application filed February This invention relates to improvements in gloves and the like, which terms, of course, include mittens and other hand coverings.
The novelty more particularly resides in the means for causing the wrist covering to fit snugly around the wrist of the wearer without causing any undue or general constriction at the wrist so as to impede circulation. The novelty more specifically resides in the provision of elastic means which provide such snug fit but which are movable along the wrist portion of the article.
The object, therefore, of the invention is to provide an improved glove, mitten and the like.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the drawings there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out tne objects of the invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact form shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claims which follow.
in the drawings:
Figure l is a plan View of a glove embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view enlarged of a portion of the glove, parts being cut away; and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
ln the selected embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, there is shown such an article of the glove type, although it is immaterial to the invention whether the hand portion is of the glove type shown or not separated into individual finger coverings as in the mitten type. The hand portion 4 may be of any suitable material as is common in this art, for instance a woven fabric 5 which if desired may have a leather facing which is not illustrated because it does not constitute the invention.
The wrist portion 6 is here shown as of knitted material which may conveniently be manufactured in tubular form. A section of such tubularly knit material is cut from the stock and is folded upon itself to form a double ply Wrist portion with the folded crease away from the hand portion. The two free ends of the knit material are placed in opposition and connected to the hand portion.
15 1926. Serial No. 88,459.
The elastic means preferably consists of a single rubber annular such as a rubber band 7 which is placed bet-ween the plies of the wrist portion before the connection of the latter to the hand portion. This elastic element is therefore freely movable within the space between the double plies of the wrist portion.
In assembling the completed article, the wrist portion is folded upon itself, the elastic element inserted between the plies, and the double ply wrist portion is placed upon the hand portion so that the two free ends of the wrist portion and ends of the fabric and facing of the hand portion are terminally adjacent so that a line of stitching 8 may unite all. Thereafter the wrist portion is turned to assume the position shown in Figure 3 to form the completed article.
This novel glove thus assures a snug lit to wrists of variant thickness and does not constrict over a relatively large area of a users wrist as is true of gloves having wrist portions made of elastic knitted material. Furthermore, the elastic may readily be replaced simply by cutting the stitching, replacing the element and re-stitching while the elastic itself is free to be moved by the wearer as best suits the comfort of the in dividual.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent upon, is:
1. A. wrist band for gloves or mittens comprising a two-ply member closed at the outer end and having the inner end closed and attached to the glove around the hand opening therein, and a separate elastic member positioned loosely between the plies of the twoply member and adjustable lengthwise between its opposite closed ends.
2. A glove or mitten having a wrist band comprising a tubular fabric member which is centrally folded upon itself to provide inner and outer faces and which has its ends stitched around the hand opening of the glove or mitten, an elastic band between the folds of the wrist band and free of connec tion therewith and likewise free for move- .ment to any desired position throughout the length of the wrist band.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of Feb. 1926.
l/VILLIAM O. WELLS.
