Description
. LWLMQ w. E. Bumz MOP HEAD Filed ept. 20,
Patented et. 23, i923.
Leih@ WILLIAM E. BURTZ, OF COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOP HEAD.
Application led September To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLinr'r E. BURTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Co lumbia, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mop Head, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to mop heads, and more particularly to the manner ofsecuring the yarn or other suitable material employed in constructing the mop, to the body portion of the mop head.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a securing` means wherein the yarn or material employed in the construction of the mop, is held in a groove in the body portion of the mop head, the edges of the groove acting in a manner to prevent the yarn or material forming the mop from being moyed from its positionunder the securing wire, while the mop is in use.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in theJ combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure l is an elevational view of a mop constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the mop head.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the mop head.
Figure 4c is a transverse sectional view through the mop head.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the body portion of the mop head is indicated at 5, the same being preferably formed of wood` it being understood however that the mop may be made of any suitable material.
Formed in one vedge of the body portion 5 is a. groove indicated at 6 which groove is relatively wide and designed to accommodate the securing wire, and yarn or other material employed in forming the mop proper.
l As shown, the edges of the groove are 2U, 1922. Serial No. 589,399.
relatively square, defining sharp corners to Contact with the yarn or material forming the mop, to hold the same against movement when themop is in use, thereby eliminating any possibility ofthe yarn Working from under its securing wire.
- The mop proper or surface engaging portion thereof is constructed of lengths of yarn or other suitable material, bent upon themselves, the intermediate portions of the lengths of yarn being` disposed within the groove and held in the groove by means of the securing wire indicated at 7. rJ'he yarn is indicated at 8, and is shown as engaged by the securing Wire 7 and held to the body portion 5 at points adjacent to the ends of the body portion 5.
This securing wire includes a length of flexible material bent upon itself to provide loop portions 9, the wire being of a length so that the loop portions may be brought to positions overlying the upper edge of the body portion 5, Where the same is secured to the body portion 5 as by means of the tacks l0.
Securing staples l1 straddle portions of the securing Wire, the staples ll being disposed in spaced relation with each other throughout thel length of the securing wire.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the securing means is protected by the yarn or material employed in forming the scrubbing element of the mop to the end that the securing means can in no Way scratch or mar the floor surface on which the mop is being used.
T he body portion 5 is also formed with a central opening 12 designed to accommodate the mop handle 13.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a mop head, a body portion, said body portion having a groove formed along one edge thereof, a mopping element positioned in the groove, said mopping element having portions thereof positioned at the ends of the body portion, a looped securing Wire adapted to engage the mopping element and hold the same Within the groove, portions of the securing wire extending over the ends of theJ body portion and closely engaging the body portion at the upper edge thereof, means extending through the loops for securngthe Wire to the body portion, and se- In te'stmony'that I lclaim the foregoing as curing staples embracing portions of thesen my own; I have hereto aixed my signature 10 'Curlng Wlre at polnts between the ends 0f in the presence' of two Witnesses.V the seouln' .Wire and Groove formed in the Y body portn 'to hold tle securing Wire? into l WILLAM E' BURTZ, close engagement with the body portion to Witnesses:
secure the Wire to the boElyLporton at the B. HARRY MENCHEY, v ends thereofx A. K. CRoM.
