Application led February ,1, 1922. Serial No. 533,180. f
To all/whom t may concern:
Be it known ythat I, AXEL' JOHNSON, a citizen -of the United States, residing at Oakland,v inthe county of Alameda and State ofCalifornia, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Operating Means for YCasement Windows, Vof which the yfollowing is a specification.
sash; to provide a construction equipped with a jam nut, the` operation of which will lockthe window in its adjusted position; `to provide a construction which is adapted for insertion or positioning as a uiiit at little cost7 and which will readily adapt itselfor thev operation of the common link type of reversible Casement windows. f Y
With theabove mentioned and, other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and Combinationof parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the kaccompanying drawings, and 'set forth inV the claimshereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, pro
portion, size and minor details of construen tion within the scope of the claims may be Vresorted to without departing Jromthe spiritV or sacrificing any of the advantages yof the i invention# Y I f n Y To-more. VYfully comprehend the invention reference is directed to theaccompanying drawings, wherein f 1 1 of Figure`2, of a reversibleicasement in its sashillustrating the easement mounting Y 'Figure 2 is a view in broken'vfront elevationof arcasement anditssash illustrating one embodiment of my invention connectedV therewith." l, y

ln the present disclosure, particularljryy Figure '6, the top wall 3 ofthe ysash is formedwith a channel in which is mounted a channel guide 4 into which projects a guide pin or member 5 extending upwardly from oneV end of' the easement 2, Figures l, 2 and y6 of the drawings. The topand bottom edges of the' easement 2 are longitudinally re` cessed `for theirfull length, as at, which recesses` open toward the innerV face of the'` easement, and withinjeach of saidV recesses` is mounted a .linkV mounting arm 7 held Y in placesby screws 8, the upper link mounting arm carrying atV its terminal "end the i member 5., and said. upperand lower arms s Figure 1 is a view in sectiom'taken on line at their inne-rends each terminate slightly ioor to one jsiderof the vertical center of they Each pivotally connects, asfat link l0, the opposite end ofsaid respective tixedf plates 12 mounted as illustrated in Figures'l, 3 'andf of the drawings, at`
one end of the `sash opening. Disposed longitudinally*of the sash opening andar- 'linksfbeing' pivotally secured as at 11vv to i" sill 13 is a bearing plate 14 secured to the upper `surface of theouter sill 15, and the inner edgel of said bearing plate is raised providing a guide rail 16 extending longitudinally beneath the outer edge of the sill 13 with its downwardly extended vertical portion 17 in contact with thek inner edge of the outer sill 15. Connected with the lower edge of the easement 2 at a point beneath the upper guide pin 5 through a vertical fulcrum 18 extending into the member 7 is a Casement guide plate 19 carrying spaced fingers 2O overlying the guide rail 16, as in Figures 3 and 6. This construction is the conventional reversible casement construction now universally in use, and my present invention relates to the following designed operating means for moving the easement and for retaining the saine in its adjusted position. i
Secured' to the rough 'sash 21 disposed beneath the inner sill 13 is an angle plate 22 disposed with its horizontal upper surface 23 in the same plane with the bearing plate 14, and with its vertical wall or'flange 24 in close parallel relation with theportion 17 of bearing plate 14. The angle plate 22 is of a length corresponding to the width ofthe sash opening and the flange 24 thereof, on its inner side, adjacent opposite ends, carries conventional bearing frames 25 and 25, the frame 25 being retained in fixed position by the retaining nuts 26, and the frame 25 being mounted for slight longitudinal movement relatively to the plate, which movement is accomplished by the slotted openings 27 through which extend the bolts 248. Each of the frames rotatably carries a shaft 29, and each shaft carries a sprocket 30, the teeth of which sprockets projectupwardly through openings 31 in the upper surface 23 of the angle plate.` Around the sprockets and through openings 31 extends a suitable easement operating chain 32, the upper flight of which rests on and moves longitudinally of theV upper surface of the angle plate, and has connectionv at one point through part 33 with the guide fingers 2O of the plate 19. rlhe connection between the guide fingers and chain is so arranged that when the' easement is in Vfully closed position, the upper flight of the chain will rest with said part 33 directly above one of the sprockets 30. An adjustable springv tension member 34 associated with bearing frame 25,v Figuresv4 and 5, maintains the chain 32Aunder tension. A. i y
Y.The shafts 29 extend outwardly through therough sash 21 and 'lower sash trim V35. as in Figure 7,and the polygonal ends of said shafts extend part wayk through corresponding openings in bearings 36. The
:bearings 36 are flanged, as att-37, on their inner'ends, and are mounted within pockets or recesses 38 in the sash trim 35. The bearings are rotatably mounted in bearing oriiices formed centrally in face plates 39, said plates being secured as by screws 40 to the sashptrim and formed with a series of annular serrations or teeth 41 on their outer faces. The outer end of the bearing 36 is threaded, and on the same is adjustably mounted a jam nut 42 preferably circular in formation, and provided with a flange 43 affording a gripping surface. rlhe adjustment of the jam nut on the threaded end of the bearing causes a jamming of the bearing and a retaining of the nut by the serrations 41 whereby the easement isflocked in its adjusted position. To rotate either of the shafts to operate the easement a crank shaft 44 may be employed, the polygonal end 45 ofwhich is received in the polygonal opening within the bearing 36.
twill be observed that it is only necessary to insert the end 45 of the crank 44V into one of the openings in the bea-rings 36 and rotate the bearing after both jam nuts v42 have been released, and the casement will be operated to any desired position, either full open or closed, or if desired completely reversed.
ln an installation of the type illustrated, wherein the window is a horizontal swinging easement, both Vshafts 29 may extend through the sash trim andait'ord two operating points for the easement, but where a vertical swinging casement is employed, it is only necessary to extend one shaft through the sash trim preferably the lower shaft to place the operating point in convenient reach of one desiring to operate the sash.
1t will'be observed that in the present window construction a departure is made fromthe conventional form, which departure consists in positioning the fulcrum points 11 and 18 in odset relation to each other affording the easy operation of the fulcrum 9 connecting members 7 and 10, and which improved construction overcomes the deadv centering of the'fulcrum 9 when the window is closed, which is the case when fulcrums 11 and 18 are in alignment.
I claim n 1. An operating means for a Casement ino window provided with a guide rail longi-L tudinally of which one edge of the win'dow slides, the same comprising an angle plateA and provided with sprocket openings, a pair of bearing frames carried on the underside of the plate, a sprocket within each bearing frame andone projecting through each y opening, a shaft supporting each sprocket. a chain operating over said sprockets and passing through said sprocket openings, whereby one Hight operates over one face immers Y Y of said pla-te, :i` yieldable take-up for-'Said chain, and an operating connection between the ohain and Casement.
With a guide rail, a reversible closure mount# ed to. close the sash opening, a guide part pivotally connected to the closure at one end and comperating Wit-h the rail to cause a movementl of said closure end in a straight 10 line Within said sash, a link fulerumed at one t end to the closure et its approximate centery l and atits opposite end fulcrumed to oneend Y of the sash, said latter fulorum being offset 2. In combinationv With e sash provided' from the fulcrum connection between the closure and guide part, and anV operating 15 member connected Ywith the closure operating the same. A n t f In testimony whereof I have Signed my name to this specification. f
