To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that l, JOHN' HOWARD LACY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an lmprove- 'ment in Safety Razors, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, vis 'a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This linvention relates to safety razors of the type known to the trade as the Gillette razor, such razors being constructed with a blade-supporting head having a guard, a transversely-exible blade carried by said head, and means for clamping the blade to the head and for adjustably flexing the blade transversely.

In some razors of this type the bladesupporting head is formed with a channel located behind the guard, said channel extending from one end to the other 0f the head and being situated directly beneath the cutting edge of the blade. The advantage of having the channel extending directly underneath the cutting edge is that the adjustment of the cutting edge due to'a greater or less degree of flexing of the blade is accomplished without changing appreciably the distance of the cutting edge from the guard or from the point at which the guard bears on the skin in the act of shaving.

l have found from experience, however that where a razor is made With the channel running the full length of the heath/the corners of the blalde are not sufficiently protected and the result is thatv unless a person` uses a razor very carefully the corners are apt to catch in and cut the skin, especially where the razor is being manipulated around a portion of the face having an uneven con. tour.

lt is a principal object of my present invention t0 provide a safety razor with lmeans for properly protecting the corners ofthe blade so as to prevent any danger of cut.-

ln order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the' drawings a selected embodiment thereof which wil now be described after which the novel feaout in the appended claims.

In the razor herein` shown'll indicates the 70 handle of the razor having a blade-supporting head 2 at one end thereof and provided on its opposite edges with a guard, the latter being herein shown as the end portions 15 of a row of teeth 3. 4 indicates the blade, which is of the transversely-flexible type, said blade being clamped to the head 2 by means of a blade-clamping cap 5. This cap is shown as having a screw-threaded stem 6 which extends through the handle 1 and which is engaged by a nut 7. The blade-clamping cap is also shown as provided with positioning pins 8 which extend through apertures in the blade and in the head 2.' The head 2 is formed on each side with a channel 9 situated directly underneath the cutting edge 10 ofthe blade, said channel being formed in the teeth 3 constituting the guard. The presence of this channel which extends the full length of the head forms a guard which extends from the edge ofthe head to the point 11 only. and yalso provides aconstruction in which the cutting edge 10 of the blade is separated from the guard 'or any portion of the head throughout its entire length. With this construction any adjustment of the blade which is secured by flexing it more or less does not change appreciably the dist-ance between the cutting edge 10 and the guard, so that the proper relation between the cutting edge. and guard are always .maintained in all adjustments of the blade. v

The parts thus ,far described are or may be all as usual in razors of this type and form no part of my present invention.

In the construction herein shown the teeth f 3 are made thick enough sothat the portion 13 thereof Where the outer tace meets the channel or groove 9 sta-nds slightly above the cutting edge. This is clearly shown in Fig. 2 from which it will be evident how these thickened portions 3 or" the guard function to protect the corners 12 of the blade and prevent thorn from cutting -or injuring the skin during the shaving operation.

With this arrangement wherein the groove or channel 9 extend-s the entire length ot" the head, the full advantage incident to the use of the groove or channel is obtained, and at the saine time the corners ol the blade are protected, this being accoinplished Without in anyway interferin with the. proper functioning of the razor during the shaving operation.

A safety razor comprising a bladesupporting head having Ia guard, a transverselyflexible blade and means :for adjustably clamping said blade to said head, said head having a channel behind the guard and situated beneath the cutting edge o* the blade, which channel extends the full length of the blade so that the cutting edge oi" the blade ,throughout vits length is separated slightly from any portion of the head, the portions of the guard opposing the corners of the blade having their outer lacesv situated slightly above the remaining portion of the guard thereby amply guarding but permitting the use of said blade corners.

2. ln a safety razor, the combination with a blade-supporting head having a row of teeth forming a guard,l of a transversely-` ilexible blade, and ineens for clamping said blade to said head, said teeth being formed With a channel located beneath the cutting` edge oi the blade and which .extends the full length oit said cutting edge whereby the cutting edge throughout its entire length is out fot contact with any portion of theihead, the
