I Claims.
The "invention relates to an attachment for safety razors in the "-"formof a shildfor the cuting edge o'f the razor tilade when the razor is not in use,J-an object being to prdte'ct 'and guard the cutting edge ofthe blade from injury resulting from contact'with:extraneousobjects so that said cutting edge will 'not be dulled orlm'arred and the keenness of the 'sharp shavln'g edge or the blade will be preserved -'for a much longer tim e than would be otherwise possible. I I Theiinv'erition *conslsts in the novelconstruction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of a Gillette type safety razor having the invention applied thereto, one-half of the head of the razor being shown in central transverse section.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the invention. I
Figure 3 isa detail top plan view of the invention as applied to the head of the razor, with the base and the handle removed. I I
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the head of a Gem type safety razor, having a modification of the invention applied thereto.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of this modification. I I I In the drawing, the numeral I designates the cap of one form of the Gillette type razor, having a central screw stem 2 and central longitudinal ribs 3 with which the central longitudinal slot 4 of the razor blade 5 has engagement to maintain the parts in proper relative position. The base 6 of this razor is provided with central longitudinal slots and a central perforation respectively engaging said ribs and said stem for the same purpose. The base 6 and the cap I constitute jaw between which the razor blade is flexed and clamped upon screwing the handle 9 upon said stem and against said base.
The invention consists of the detachable shield I0, having a central longitudinal slot II, said shield being of the same general form and shape as that of the razor blad 5 in the case of the Gillette but of greater breadth, the extra breadth being utilized in the provision of marginal longitudinal grooves I 2 starting at the lateral edges of the cap I. The trough of each of these grooves is partially spanned by the cutting edge portion of the blade 5, the outer edge wall I3 of the groove being spaced from, projecting at least tothe plane of and guarding the cutting edge 5 of the blade against contact with extraneou objects. These grooves have open ends I4 to facilitate cleaning and provide each an air space or "chamber I S wherein heats "the cu'tting edge portion-of the blade *5 ito facilitate free evaporation bfmoisture therefrom. i
"The'shi'l'd I'II is o'f equal ithinness throughout, being 1 thin enoughsoithat -when it is placed upon the -"cap '-I of the -razor and the razor blade 5 placed thereover in assembling the parts both shield and blade will have the central longitudinal slots thereof engaging 'the centralribs fi -"of the cap to maintain the parts in proper relative position. The shield is slightly concavo-convex whereby in assembling the parts it will be located closely against the inner concave face of the cap I to thereby leave suflicient of the ribs 3 of the cap projecting above the shield for engagement therewith of the central longitudinal slots of the blade 5 and of the base 6.
It will be noted that the cutting edge 5 of the blade 5 is guarded by the outer edge wall of the I groove II of the shield from contact with extraneous objects both before the blade is flexed between the jaws of the razor and after said blade is flexed.
The shield I0 may be applied without modification thereof to any form of Gillette type razor including those forms nolonger on sale as well as those forms on sale.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of thedrawing a modified form of shield is shown which is applicable to the Gem type razor, similar parts having similar reference characters applied thereto differentiated by the exponent I. Inasmuch as the Gem blade has but one cutting edge, the shield I0 used therewith has but one marginal longitudinal groove I2.
I claim:
1. The combination with a safety razor, of an attachment for protecting the cutting edge of the razor blade when the razor is not in use, comprising a detachable shield clamped between the cap and base of the razor head contiguously to said blade, said shieldhaving a marginal longitudinal groove the trough of which is partially spanned by the cutting edge portion of said blade, the outer edge wall of said groove being spaced from, extending at least to the plane of and guarding the cutting edge of said. blade against contact with extraneous objects, said groove providing an airspace wherein floats the cutting edge portion of said blade to facilitate comprising adetachable shield clamped between I said groove providing an air space wherein floats the cutting edge portion of the blade to facili-,
tat free evaporation of moisture therefrom.
3. The combination with a safety razor, of an attachment for protecting the cutting edge of tectingthe cutting edge of the razor blade when the razor is not in use, comprising a shield adapted to be clamped between the cap and base of the razor head contiguously to said blade, said shield having a marginal longitudinal groove the trough of which is adapted to be partially spanned by the cutting edge portion of said blade with the outer edge wall of said groove spaced from, extending at least to the plane of and guarding the cutting edge of th blade against contact with extraneous objects, an'd with the cutting edge portion of the'jblade floating in said trough to facilitate'free evaporation of moisture therefrom.
the razor blade when the razor'is'not in use, v
comprising a detachable shield clamped between the cap and base of the razor head contiguously to said blade, said shield having a marginal lon-' gitudinal groove the trough of which is partially spanned by the cutting edge portion of said blade, the outer edge wallof said groove being spaced from, extending at least to the plane of and guarding the cutting edge of said blade against contact with extraneous objects, said groove having open ends to facilitate cleaningqand providing an air space wherein floats the cutting edge portion of saidvblade to facilitate free ev p e tion of moisture therefrom. e
4. An attachment for safet razors for pro- 5. An attachment for safety razors for protecting the cutting edge of the razor blade when the'razor is not in use, comprising a shield adapted to b clamped betweenthe cap and base of the razor head contiguously to said blade, said shield having a marginal longitudinal groove the trough of which is adapted to be partially spanned by the cutting edge portion of said blade with the outer edge wall of said groove spaced from, extending at least to the plane of and guarding the cutting edge of the 'blade against contact with extraneous objects, and with the cuttin edge portion of the blade floatin insaid trough to facilitate free evaporation of moisture therefrom, said groove having open ends to facilitate cleaning.
