Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH LETOHWORTH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,767, dated January 27, 1874; application filed November 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osIAH LETcHwoRTH, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Haines, of which the following is aspecification:
rlhe invention relates to an attachment for the upper portion of the haines, for the purpose of facilitating the connection and adjustment of the upper haine-strap therewith.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a hame provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the front edge thereof. Fig. is a crosssection in line w x, Fig. l.
Like letters designate like parts in each of the iignres.
A is the hame. B is my loop attachment, consisting of two or more loops, b b, connecting side pieces b1 b1, cross-bars' b2 b2, and ilanges b3 b3, which overlap sides of the haine. The attachment is readily cast, and is .secured to the llame by rivets c c, passing through the hame and connecting the ilanges b3 b3, and also by rivets c c', passing through two or more of the cross-bars b2 b2, which, by extending through the back-strap d, serve as a means for securing the latter to the haines. The loops b b project suiliciently from the haine to permit the hame-strap to be passed around the loop,
as shown in Fig. 1.
If preferred, the cross-bars b2 may be countersunk in the ha'me, and the portions of the haine underneath the loops may be cut away to permit the insertion of the llame-strap, whereby the attachment may be made so as to project but little beyond the surface ofthe wood. While I prefer to secure the attaehment by rivets passing in both directions through the haine., it is obvious that the rivets connecting the flanges, or those passing through the crossbars, either alone, will be sufficient to hold it in place under ordinary circumstances.
The attachment may be provided with two or more loops, b, as may be desired, in order to permit the required range of adjustment of the haine-strap.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combinatiolnwith a haine, of the loop attachment B, consisting of two or more loops, b b, connecting side pieces b1 b1, and cross-bars b2 b2, rigidly secured to the front edge of the haine, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, with a hame and loop attachment B, of the `flanges b3 b3 and rivets c c, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
J OSIAH y LETCHWORTH. Titnesses JN0. J. BONNER, EDWARD WILHELM.
