Furniture-Casters.

BENJAMIN F. POTTER, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN. i
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNITURE-CASTERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,707, dated January 20, 1874; application filed December 18,1873.
` State ot' Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters for Furniture 5 and I do hereby declare that the follo win g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciication.
lhe nature of my invention consists in the novel manner' ot combining a conical-shaped pivot with the several parts of a caster, as and for the purpose hereinafter stated.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the sa1ne,I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis afront elevation of the caster; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of the same on line .c Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of screw-plug and washer.
A represents a leg for a piece of furniture, to which my caster is applied. In the end of the leg A is secured, vertically upward, a screw, B, which, with a washer, C, and screwplug, D, are all formed in one piece, the washer C coming close up against the end of the leg, and the screw-plug D projecting downward from the washer. In the center of the screwplug D is formed a conical recess, a, which forms the bearing` in which the pivot of the caster revolves. E represents a caster-wheel pivoted in the frame Gr, said wheel and frame being constructed in any of the known and usualways. The frame Gr is pivoted loosely to a screw-cap, H, by means of a rivet, b, which is immovably secured -to the frame, and the upper end of which, within the cap, forms a cone, d. The cap H being screwed tightly upon the plug D, the cone d enters the recess or seat c, and constitutes the pivot upon which the caster revolves, all strain or weight being removed from the cap H, except so far as it acts as a guide to hold the pivot'in proper position in the seat.
By this construction of the various parts the leg of the furniture is protected and strengthened by the washer, the caster-frame can turn easily in either direction, having always a i perfectly true bearing, and it is not liable to become deranged or loose from the leg.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the screw B, washer C,
plug D, with seat a, frame G, with conical pivot d, and cap H, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 13E-NJ. F. POTTER.
