CHARLES ARTHUR 2HARNDEN,OIF ALDERLEY "EDGE; NGLAND,
nMBossrne MACHINE on rnnss.
App1i eation filed September To all whcmz'it mag/concern: I p
Be v1t known that I, CHARLES A TH R HARNDEN, a sub ect of the Klng of Great Britain, residing at Sunnyhurst, @ongletoir Road, Alderley Edge, in the county of Ches ter, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embossing Machines or Presses, of which the following is'a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in or relating to embossing machines or presses of that type by which materials such as fabrics, skins and the like whether coated or otherwise are embossed by means of a die or equivalent 1n con unction with a pressure member comprising an elastic or yieldingdiaphragm forming part of a water or fluid pressure chamber. i
In such machine the diaphragm or mem brane has heretofore in some cases been formed of india rubber or other elastic material or else one side of a box or chamber made of'rubber, lead or copper has'been arranged to yield under pressure. p
In another case a spring steel or other resilient or flexible metal plate suitably shaped and with confined but resilient edges has been employed for the purpose in View and said plate wasadapted to be acted upon by fluid pressure in such manner that the pressure was evenly distributed upon the material during'the embossing process.
According to the present invention the flexible metal plate or diaphragm is mounted with capability of rising vertically while means are provided for the prevention of the leakage of the pressure fluid and further, the whole press is modified in construction and action as hereinafter explained by the aid of the accompanying drawings in which t Figure 1 is an elevation of a press con structed according to the present invention. FigureQ is a section of the movable platen carrying the flexible plate or diaphragm and Figure 3 is a plan thereof. Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stationary cap or bonnet of the press,
2 represents the base or fixed bottom, 3 the supporting columns or pillars, 4: the engraved or etched embossing plate, 5 the movable platen, which is made adjustable by means of a wedge 6 and screw 7 in the known manner, 8 are wedges carried by the follower 5 and 9 are wedges carried by a bar 10 which is adapted to-be reeiprocated 1', 1922. Serial no, 585,586.
by any suitable means so as to cause the wedges 9 to act upon the wedges 8 in order to set up the movable platen 5.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3 a plate 110f thin sheet steel or other suitable metal is mounted upon the movable platen 5 and 1s flanged 'or' bent at right angles at its edges as shown while upon the platen 5 is mounted a plate or casting 12 preferably formed of steel and around this plate and between the edge thereof and the flange of the plate 11 is arranged a ring or washer 13 preferably of resilient or elastic material and of U section as shown in Figure 2 and around the outer surface of the flange of the flexible plate 11 is a ring orfraine 14 e which is fixed upon the movable platen 5 by means of screws 15 and the ring or frame 14: is furnished with a flange or projection 16 which is adapted to enter a groove or recess 1'? in the movable platen 5.
The flexible plate 11 is arranged at a short distance from the plate 12'and between said platesis arranged a frame or distance piece 18 which has for its object to prevent the flexible plate 11 sinking vto a point too close to the plate 12.
In operation the movable platen 5 is raised by moving the bar 10 which slides the wedges 9 with relation to the wedges 8 which brings the flexible plate 11 in close proximity to the plate 4 after which the water is turned on which enters through the inlet 19 the space between the plates 12 and llforcing the latter which is mounted in such manner that the flanges thereof slide upwardly between the rings 13 and 14 with an even pressure and by reason of the packing ring 18 a perfectly tight joint is ensured. r
It will .be understood that lieu of em ploying wedges actuated by a' reciprocating bar for raising the platen 5 toggle levers of well known construction actuated by a cam in the well known mannermay be sub stituted therefor and that the details of construction of the apparatus may be modified lever arrangement or other suitable means in Which case the Water Within the Water space, owing to the flexible plate 11 being mounted with capability of sliding vertieally, would act to some extent as a cushion.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an embossing machine, a platen, a flexible and resilient member overlying said platen and forming between said member and platen a fluid-tight compartment, said member being bodily movable away from the platen thereby to vary the depth of said compartment.
2. In an embossing machine, a platen, an
open frame carried by said platen, a flexible and resilient plate overlying the platen and having a flange adapted to fit Within the opening of said frame, a packing member carried by the platen and adapted to maintain the flange in close engagement with the 'fll-IDG to form a fluid-tight compartment between the platen a-ndvresilient plate, the flange of said plate being movable between said packing member and frame to vary the depth of said compartment.
3. In an embossing machine, a platen, a resilient plate supported above said platen in spaced relation thereto, said plate having a continuous flange at right-angles thereto around its periphery, and means carried by a the platen for yieldably retaining said flange and forming therewith a fluid-tight joint.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
CHARLES ARTHUR HARNDEN.
