In the form shown, a channel frame 10, comprising sheet metal, is provided at its forward extremity with upper and lower jaws 11 and 12 respectively. A die plate 13, positioned between the jaws, is rigidly mounted 35 on the upper jaw 11 by lugs 15 integral with the edges of the upper jaw which extend into slots 16 in the die plate. The extremities of the lugs are burred for securing the plate to the jaw.
A'die 17 having a cylindrical boss 18 at its center is mounted on the die plate 13 and'is extended through a. central aperture in the latter. A cap 19 is positioned over the upper end of the boss 18, its edges bearing up on the 45 upper surface of the die plate 13. The die 17 and the cap 19 are rigidly secured to the die plate by a screw 14 extendingthrough an aperture in the cap and threaded in an aperture in the boss 18.
A lever 20, comprising a channel shaped bar, having an open notch 20 near its rear end, is pivotally and movably mounted on a cross pin 21 which extends between the sides of the frame 10. Lugs 22 on the upper edges of the lever 20 are provided for securing a lower die plate 23 to the forward end of the lever. The die plate 23 has apertures for receiving the lugs 22 which may also be burred for firmly securing the die plate 23 in position.
An actuating lever 24 of bell-crank shape is disposed between the sides of the frame 10. The upper and rear end portion of the lever 24 is provided with a handle 25 and a roller 26 is journaled on a pin 26 mounted on the forward end portion of the lever. The lever 24 is pivotally supported by a pin 27 engaged in a notch 28 formed in the lower sides of the lever and positioned rearwardly of the roller 26.
The bottom of the lever 20 which is provided with a forward offset section 29 and an inclined portion 30 rests upon the roller 26 for supporting the forward end of the lever.
A spring 31 engaged at one extremity against the inner side of the handle 25 and at its other extremity upon the upper edge of the lever 20 normally urges the handle of the actuating lever upwardly and the lever 20 downwardly. The spring 31 extends forwardly from the handle substantially to the jaw portion of the frame 10 where it is bent around a pin 32 and extended rearwardly therefrom, the lower end portion of the spring being bent forwardly and engaged against the upper edges of lever 20.
When the handle 25 is urgec downwardly against the action of the spring 31, the lever 24 pivots about the pin 27 and the roller 26 is moved upwardly and rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3for bringing the die 17 and'a second die 33 mounted on the lower die plate 23 together. When the handle 25 is released, the spring 31 urges the rear end of the lever 24 upwardly and the forward end thereof downwardly. This action rotates the roller 26 about the pin 27 and causes it to pass over the inclined portion of the bottom of the lever 20 onto the offset portion 29 thereof.
The spring 31 presses the lever 20 and the die supported thereon dow .wardly away from the stationary die 1.? providing an open gap between the engraved surfaces of the die into which one or more sheets of paper may be inserted.
The sides of the frame 10 are provided with slots 34; in which a pin 35, having enlarged ends 36, is slidably mounted. llotches 37 formed in the sides of the actuating lever 24: are. positioned to register with. the slot 34 when the actuating lever is in its lowermost position. The pin may be engaged in the notch 87 for locking the rear end of the actuating lever in its lowermost position to retain the engraved surfaces of the dies in close adjacency when the device is not in use.
The open notch in the rear end of the lever 20 permits the latter to move upwardly and downwardly. relative to the frame for retaining a substantially parallel relationship between the engraved surfaces of the dies. This arrangement effects an even distribution of pressure throughout the entire areas of the dies and causes all portions of the seal to be impressed upon the paper with equal definiteness.
During the first stage of the downward movement of the handle 25, the roller 26 engages the inclinedsurface 30 of the lever 20 and moves the forward end thereof rapidly during this stage. rfter the roller reaches the rearward-section of the bottom of the lever 20 the upward movement of the forward end of the lever is more slowly effected. This arrangement permits the dies to be moved together rapidly after the paper has been inserted therebetween and causes the dies to approach each other more slowly thereafter for facilitating accurate placing of the seal upon. the paper. The finalmovement is accomplished comparatively slowly and with great power due to the wedging effect of the roller as it approaches the crest of its path of movement,
The freedom of the rearward end of the lever-2O to move upwardly relative to the frame assures a substantially vertical approach between the dies when corresponding engraved surfaces thereof are forming impressions in the paper preventing deformation of the impressions.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will. be understood that numerous the bottom surface of said first-mentioned lever for cammingthe movable die upwardly at one rate of speed when the roller passes over the offset surfaceand at a different rate of speed thereafter.
2. A seal stamp of the class described, comprising a frame, a stationary die mounted on said frame, a lever having a notch at one end portion engaged on a pin of the frame, a die at the otherend of the lever, an actuating lever mounted on the frame having an end roller supporting the forward end of the firstmentioned lever, a spring disposed between the two levers for urging the first-mentioned lever and the die thereon away from the stationary die, and an inclined cammed surface on the first-mentioned lever in the path of said roller for effecting rapid movement of the movable die towards the stationary die during the first state of themovement of said actuating lever.
