UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrrcn AROHIBALD A. PORTER, OF GRIFFIN, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEANS FOR IMPROVING THE ACOUSTIC QUALITIES OF HALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,550, dated January 20, L574; application tiled November 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD A. lon'rnu, of Griffin, in the county of Spalding and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Improving the Acoustic Qualities of Halls and do hereby declare that thefollowin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the method employed for improving the acoustic qualities of halls or other rooms or buildings by stretching one or more series of wires across such hall or room; and the nature of my invention consists in providing oneor more openings through the wall of the hall or room, and connecting the wires to a flat bar or plate inserted and keyed or otherwise fastened in said opening, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed draw ing, in. which- Figure l is a plan view of a hall or room embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 shows longitudinal sections of tubes inserted in the openings.
A A represent the walls of a hall, room, or other building for public speaking. In these walls are made one or more openings, of any suitable size and shape. I prefer to make these openings circular, and to insert in each a tube, 13, provided at its inner end with a circumferential flange, a, which is made fast to the tube and bears against the inner side of the wall. The tube B projects beyond the outer side of the wall, and has a loose collar or flange, I), slipped over its end. A pin, (I, is passed through the outer end of the tube, against the outside of the flange 1), thus holding the tube in place. The pin (1 also passes through a flat bar or plate, 0, which is placed cei'itrally and longitudinallythrough the tube. To the inner end of the plate or bar 0 are at tached the wires D 1), which may be strung across the hall in any desired manner.
I am aware that the employment of wires strung across a hall or room for the purpose of improving the acoustic qualities thereof is not new; hence I disclaim such as being broadly my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
One or more openings made in the walls of a hall or other room, in combination with one or more series of wires strung across said hall, and their ends attached across said opening, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1-lth day of October, 1873.
ARGHIBALD A. PORTER.
