UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroE MARTIN STONEHOOKER, OF STREATOR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AWNINGS.
Specification forming part o1" Letters Patent No.157,358, dated December l, 1874; application led August 12, 1874.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN STONEHOGKER, of Streator, La Salle county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Awnings, of which the following is a clear, full,
- and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a top View of the awning. Fig. 2 shows a section through .fr Fig. 3 shows the inner frame-Work.
My invention has reference to that class of awnings which are also used as shutters for buildings; and it consists in the construction, as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents a frame-work of any suitable material; the pieces c b, placed at any desirable distance apart, and at right angles, as shown in Fig. 3, thus forming square i or rectangular spaces, which constitute or become air-chambers c, when the frame-work is covered on both sides with sheet-iron, tin, or any other suitable material.
To the awning thus constructed is hinged the section s, as shown in Fig. l, and the two sections together, when let down, form Athe shutter for the building. When the awning is raised the outer section s is allowed to swing from its hinges for the purposes of a sign.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the awning and shutter, constructed as described, the hinged seetion s, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
