SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,384, dated January 9, 1894. Application filed May 2, 1893. Serial No. 472,684 (No model.)
To all whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. MEACHAM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at McAdensville, in the county of Gaston and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Auger-Handle, of which the following is a specification.
This vinvention relates to auger handles,
and has for its object to provide a handle wherein different sized auger-Shanks may be removably mounted and readily adjusted, and which can readily be taken apart and stored within a tool-chest. With these and other-objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be hereinafter' more fully described and claimed.

Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the handle on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the parts of the handle disconf nected from each other.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a central sleeve or thirnble, having the interior portions of the opposite ends formed with Iright and left screw-threads 2 and 3, and extending vertically therethrough.

Removably and adjustably engaging the opposite screw-threaded ends of the sleeve are handlesections 5 and 6, having the exterior portions of their inner ends formed,respectively, with right and left screw-threads 7 and 8, and their extreme inner end edges beveled, as at 9, to form biting edges 10. The said handle-sections are tubular and formed of piping with the outer ends closed, and the said sleeve is also preferably formed of piping. Through the handle-sections at suitable distances from the sleeve extend openings 1], adapted to be engaged by a removable hand-lever 12, whereby the said handle-sections may be adjusted firmly and securely. The shank of the auger is provided with one or more notches 13 in opposite sides thereof and is fitted removably in the angular or square opening 4. The two handlesections 5 and 6 are then screwed inwardly into the sleeve 1 until the biting edges 10 engage the notches on the opposite sides u of the shank of the auger, to therebyhold the latter against displacement from the sleeve. By this means it will be seen that no intermediate mechanism is required to hold the auger shank in the sleeve,and that the inner edges of the handle-sections engage theauger shank directly. If desired,` one or more of the sleeves may be employed, but through the adjustment of the handle-sections the opening 4 could be made large enough to accommodate various sizes of auger Shanks.
In storing the improved handle, the handrlever is placed within the same and the whole can then be readily put away -within a toolchest or other place, thereby taking up a very small amount of room and providing for readily transporting the same from place to place.
Changes in the forni, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In an auger handle, the combination of a' central sleeve with an angular opening therethrough and right and left screw-threads on the interior of the opposite ends thereof, handle-sections with correspondingly-screwthreaded inner ends with terminating biting edges, and an auger shank having notches in the opposite sides thereof adapted to be directly engaged by the innerl biting edges of the said handlesections, substantially as described.
2. In an auger handle, the combination of a central sleeve with an angular opening therethrough and right and left screw-threads on the interior of the opposite ends thereof, tubular handle-sections having corresponding exterior screw-threads at the inner ends of the same to engage the aforesaid screwthreads, and inner opposite bevels to form biting edges, said handle-sections also being provided with openings, alhand-lever for engaging said openings of the handle-sections, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as and an auger shank having notches in the my own I have hereto affixed my signature in opposite sides thereof adapted to be directly the presence of two Witnesses.
