f Parent csa,
cnrs.
To all whom t may concern: 1
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. BOARD- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is directed to improvements in childrens cribs, and more particularly to that type Vhaving a hinged top which can be firmly locked when desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel form of lock for use in connection with cribs having drop sides, the construction being such that the top of the cribs will be effectively locked to the top rail of the drop sides and held against accidental opening.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a cribhaving a drop side capable of. being moved vertically to its closed position and then laterally to a position for lockingengagement with the top of the crib.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, and hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in. the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the end posts,
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
. Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figurev 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional view Aon the line 5-5 of Figure 1, and
Figure 6 is a detail fragmentary perspective view of the top and side previous to their locking engagement.
The crib comprises corner posts 1 which are provided with vertically spaced longitudinal grooves 2, and opening thereinto are restricted entrance slots 3, the purpose of which will appear later. The crib is of the conventional shape and it is not thought necessary to describe in detail the general construction. y
The upper ends of the uppermost slots 2 are closed by a plate 4, said plate having an inclined slot 5 formed therein, the lower end of which registers with the `upper end of the entrance slot 3 of the adjacent slot 2. The slot 5 terminates in its upper end in a horizontal slot 6 which in turn terminates in an inwardly and downwardly inclined Slot 7, the lower end of which lies adjacent the slot 5. It will be of course understood that both side posts are equipped with these plates.
The drop side 8 has its top and bottom rails 9 and 10 provided with headed studs 11 and 12, respectively, said studs being slidable in the respective grooves 2, whereby the side 8 will be guided during its vertical movement. i
The rail 9 is provided with a central recess 13 which has associated therewith a closed plate 14, said plate having a key-hole slot 15 formed therein, the purpose of which will appear later. Y
The top 16 of the crib has its Jforward rail 17 provided with a stud 18 which is adapted to engage the key-hole slot 15 to lock the top in its closed position, it being of course understood that the top can be only locked when the side 8 is in its elevated or operative position.
The to rail 9 ofV the side is further provided wit a handle 19 which serves to oscillate the raising and lowering of the side, and it will be obvious that when the top is in its closed position that the handle 19 can be grasped and the side 8 slid upwardly whereupon the stud 18 will enter the circular portion 20 of the slot 15, after which the top rail 9 of the side 8 will be slid inwardly whereupon the studs 11 will slide inwardly in the horizontal slots 6. As this operation proceeds it is obvious that the shank of the stud 18 will pass into the restricted portion of the slot 15 and further movement of the rail 9 inwardly will cause said stud to lie in the outer end of the restricted portion'ot the slot 15, whereupon the handle is manipulated so that the studs 11 will travel downwardly in the slots 7 of the plate 4, thereby Y having a stud carried by one ot its rails, a f
formed in its upper rail, zt plate closing the recess and having a key-hole slot formed V5 therein, said side being movable vertically to cause the key-hole slot to receive seid stud to interlock the side and top.
2. In :L crib of the class described, a top hingedly connected therewith, a' side slidably upwardly in it vertical direction, thence inwardly and, downwardly, and means oper. able upon relative movement of the top and vside for interlocking the top and side when 15 the latter is elevated.
In testimony whereo` I alix my signature.
` CHARLES H.` BOARDMAN.
