Description

A. M. BENNEW DRAWER Filed Nov. 29 1920 3 Sheets-Shee'fi 2 INVENTOR A TORNEY be also duplicated upon opposite sides for engagement with the opposite walls of the cabinet, while the invention may also be used in connection with a one-way drawer, whereupon the spring latch will be located at one end of the drawer only. The upper edge of each. of the end members 14 is preferably provided with a strip 32 which covers the upper end of the. guide opening 28 and provides convenient means for forming the notches 17, as the said strip may terminate short of each end of the end members 14 and thus render it unnecessary to cut away any portion of the said end members in. the formation of the notches 1'2. Of course these notches are only necessary where more than one drawer is used.
When it is desired to open the drawer from either side of the cabinet, the fingers of the hand have their ends positioned under the pull 31 whereupon the element 27 will be lifted to move the plate 24 upon the pivot 25. This will exert an inward pull upon the spring latch 22 which is connected to the element 27 through the rod 23, so that the latter will be retracted from engagement with a recess 33 formed in the adjacent side wall of the cabinet. The drawer may then be moved outward, whereupon the spring latch 22 at the opposite end of the drawer will be forced inward due to the engagement of its inclined portion with the end wall of the recess 33. In order to permit of this inward movement of the opposite spring latch 22, the rods 23 are formed in sections, the adjacent ends of which are linked together as indicated at 34, so that buckling will be prevented It will be seen from the foregoing de scription and the accompanying drawings,
that the invention provides means for holding a drawer in closed position without the. necessity of a lock and key and for preventing the said drawer being pulled entirely out of the cabinet, at the same time permitting the drawer to be opened from either end it desired. The invention is especially useful upon ships whose movement would tend to accidentally open the drawer, or upon moving vehicles, while it is also convenient for use in restricted places where there is not suiiicient room to pull out a drawer for its entire depth.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minon details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is An article of furniture embodying, a casing consisting of top, bottom and side walls. slotted guides arranged in parallel relation within the side walls, drawers slidingly mounted therein and capable of being pulled outward in either direction, the side members of each drawer having a longitudinally arranged groove registering with the guides of the side walls, and a block having its opposite ends extending within' the guides and grooves to engage the opposite ends thereof to limit the outward movement of the drawer, and spring actuated arms for holding the drawer in closed position. said arms havingmanually operated means connected thereto whereby the drawer may be released to permit of its being opened.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ARTHUR M. BENNER.
