Description

C. H. BOARDMAN CRIB SIDE LATCH Filed March 18 1925 June 22 1926,
Patented June 22, 1926.
UNITED STATES CHARLES H. IBOARDMAN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CRIB SIDE LATCH.
Application filed March 18, 1925. Serial No. 16,556.
The present invention is directed to improvements in childrens cribs.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel form of latch for holding the drop side of the crib in its elevated or closed position in a simple and practicable manner.
A further object of the invention-is to provide a latch of this nature so constructed that it can be concealed in the corner posts of the crib and conveniently actuated when it is desired to release the drop side to lower the same.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a latch so constructed and arranged that the mother can conveniently actuate the same, the actuating means being so located that the child occupying the crib can not have access thereto to release the side.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and ar rangeinent of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the'accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a sectional View on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Figure 2. Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4= of Figure 2.
Figure 5 latch.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the end frame of the crib which includes the corner posts 2, said posts having formed therein longitudinal grooves 3 having restricted entrance slots 4-, and it is in these slots that the studs 5 upon the ends of the side frames 6 operate.
The latch is formed from a single length of suitable gauge spring wire so bent as to provide a shank 7 having its lower end formed with an eye 8 in which is engaged a screw 9 to secure the shank in the base of said groove. The upper end of the shank terminates in a laterally directed upwardly inclined arm 10, which in turn terminates in a reversely bent shoulder 11 adapted to impinge against the side wall of thegroove is a perspective view of the 3 so that the upper shank 12 of the latch will be permitted to flex. The shank 12 is disposed obliquely in the slot 4: and has its upper end resting against one wall of the slot to limit the movement of the shank in one direction.
The upper end of the shank 12 terminates in a horizontally disposed finger 13 which extends through an opening 14 formed in the corner post. The outer end of this finger projects from the opening a sufficient distance to have secured-thereto an actuating button 15, which is located in a place for convenient operation.
I When the side 6 is in its closed position the upper studs 5 will rest upon the fingers 13, thus holding the side positively against opening or dropping accidentally.
To lower the side 6 the buttons 15 of each latch are grasped and upon pulling outwardly thereon the fingers 13 will be drawn outwardly until the studs slide therefrom, thus permitting the side to be lowered, the resiliency of the shanks 12 returning the fingers to their normal positions. It will be obvious to close the side it is only necessary to grasp the same and upon moving it upwardly the studs 5 will compel the shanks to flex inwardly until the studs have passed the same, whereupon the shanks will flex inwardly to cause the fingers to lie in the path of movement of the studs 5 as the side is lowered.
What is claimed is The combination with the corner post of a crib having a groove formed therein and having a restricted slot opening thereinto, a latch including a shank adapted to be fixed in the groove, the upper end of the shank terminating in a shoulder adapted to bear against the side wall of the groove, said shoulder terminating in a resilient shank the upper end of which normally engages the wall of the slot to hold said shank obliquely disposed with respect thereto, the upper end.
of said shank terminating in a finger which extends through the post, a side for the crib having a stud for engaging the finger to hold the side in its closed position, and means for actuating the finger to release the stud.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES H. BOARDMAN.
