Description

ug. M, R923. TLAMQEB W. o. MCCLINTOCK HEAT DISTRIBUTOR FOR ORCHARD BURNERS Filed Deo. 29, 1922 Wms Patented Aug. 14, i923.
HEAT :DISTRBUTOR FOR ORCILLB BURNERS.
Application filed December 29, EQ2.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, 7WILLIAM O. MoCLrN- 'rooir, a citizen of the VUnited States, residing at Vv'alnut7 in the county of Los Angeles and State oit California, have invented new and useful improvements in luieat Distributors tor Grchard Burners, of which the following is a specication.
rlhis invention relates to apparatus or aiding in the prevention of frost in orange groves, and more particularly to devices .ot the kind known as orchard heaters comprising an oil pot having an upstanding stack through which the gases oi combustion pass.
lt is an object oi the invention to provide means for more generally distributing the heat produced by combustion ol' the fuel in the oil pot. llnother object is to provide a distributor which, when in use, is adapted to be readily adjusted across the top oi the usual smoke stack or flue of the heater and which, when out of use, is adapted to be disposed around the stack iorvcompact storage and convenient disposition.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a conven tional form of orchard heater showing the distributor applied to the top of the stack, parts being in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the distributor arranged, out of use, about the stack.
F ig. 3 is an underneath plan view of the distributor. A'
lt is the very extensive practice to arrange orchard heaters of the type herein referred to at suitable points in the spaces between rows of trees, and during the operation of these heaters the products of combustion naturally rise in an unobstructed vertical column with a very ineiiicient distribution oit the heat coming from the stack. It has been proposed to use small size heaters and to increase the number of the same so as to thereby gain the advantage of a more general distribution of the heat produced by the burningof the oil fuel. My present invention has 4for its broad object to provide means Serial No. 609,718.
for practically accomplishing a distribution oiflieat from one orchard heater that will the equivalent of the use of a plurality ol" smaller heaters. also my distributor is so constructed that during the burning or the fuel, the products oi" combustion are not only diverted laterally from the stack of the heater toward a plurality or outlets remote from the axis of the stack, but moreover my distributor provides for the downward radiation of a portion or' the heat so as to accomplish a noticeable heating oi the air around the stack and also to tend to heat the ground around the heater.
conventional form of orchard heater is here shown as including an oil holding vessel or pot 2 i'rom the top olf which extends upwardly the usual smoke and flue stack 3 which is open at its top end.
The device oiz the present invention con sists of an approximately cylindrical section of tubing 5 adapted toA be arranged transversely upon the top ci the stack 3; one side of the section oi tubing being apertured ci' recessed as at G to snugly lit the top end or' the stack. Preferably, the section 5 is longitudinally split as at 7 and has a diameter approximating the diameter of the stack lt will be seen, therefore, that when it is desired to laterally divert the products ci? combustion from the heater, the distributoiI section 5 can be attached to the top oi" the stack 3, as clearly shown in Fig. l; the distributor ends projecting in substantially equal distances on each side of the top oi'i the stack to secure an approximately equal distribution of combustion products.
When the heater is out oi' use, the distributor 5 can be telescoped down around the stack 3, as clearly shown in F 2, and thus is not only conveniently disposed and associated with the hea-ter but also is arranged so as to occupy but little additional space in storage and in field.
Further embodiments, modifications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit ot the invention as here claimed.
Vhat is claimed is:
l. A heat distributor for orchard heaters having smoke stacks, said distributor consisting of a substantially tubular longitudi- Uil Q l Y f 1,464,913
2. A heat distributor for orchard heaters 5 having` smoke stacks, said distributor oonsisting of a substantially tubular noemloerV having an opening at one Side to receive the upper end of the said 'smoke stack, nelV also v being longitudinally split so that it may oe telescopecl about the stack.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
W. o; MCoLiNTooK.
