IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming pai-'t of Letters Patent No. 146,484, dated January 13, 1874; application filed May 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH SHAW, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Imlprovements in Shoe, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is an improvement on a shoe, and is for the purpose of convenience in the manufacture, and to exclude Water and dirt from the foot When Wearing it.
Figure l is a perspective View of the shoe. Fig. 2 is a view of the sole as cut out before being made up. Fig. 3 is a view of half of the vamp or tongue cramped. Fig. 4 is a view of the vamp or tongue as cut out. Fig. 5 is the gore as cut out, forming the pockets when Fig. 6 is the quarter as cut out before being made up.
A iS-the bottom part of the shoe and side pieces; B, the vamp or tongue; C, the quan ter 5 D7 gore -piece, sewed to the vamp or tongue and quarter, forming the pocket excluding the dirt.
This shoe is made as follows: First sew the then Sew them onto the crimped vamp or tongue 5 then close the back sea-1n of the quarp ter; neXt close up back seam of Sole A; then t sole A to the last by crimping the toe round and pulling up the sides to their proper place; then set and sew the vamp and quarter to the sole, which Will form a perfect Water-tight and dirt-excluding shoe.
The sole A is eut, the forward part of it narrower than the back part, as shown in Fig. 2; and the heel part is out Wide and notched out, s0 that When folded and sewed `up it makes a high counter 5 and the cut of the forward part of the sole when turned up, and the vamp or tongue When sewed in, forms the forward part of the shoe. This Vamp or tongue is cut (see Fig. 4) so as it is sewed to the sole, and the gore-piece D, and that to the quarter G, form a dirt-excluding shoe of good form.
I claim as my invention- A shoe made with sole A cut as shown in Fig. 2, vamp B, quarter C, and gore D, substantially as described.
