Description

ris connected l Patented Aug.. ld, i923.
title CLIFFORD J. onoss,
rss rari;
STOPER.
Application filed. November To all whom t may concern.' y e Be known that l, Surnom) J. Cnoss, a citizenio'lf the United States, and a resident ot the city .New York, borough of Main` hattan, in the county of New State .o-' ll ew York, have invented a new and .improved Stopper, of which the llollowinrg is a full, clear, and exact description.
rl`h-is invention relates to improvements in stoppers, and more particularly to stoppers for bottles or other containers 'for lire, extinguisher, an object of the invention be-V ing' to so construct the stopper as to insure its withdrawal from the bottle or container when the stopper is held and the hottie or container moved away .trom the same.
Heretotore, in supporting containers for tire extinguisher, it has been common practice to provide an eye on the stopper which to a fixed part so that when a pull is Vhad on the container, the stopper is f removed 4from the bottle so that the con- .i preferably Aof cork,
tion showing the stopper Vin tents oi"- th-e Vcontainer can be instantly scattered about. The eyes oi such Stoppers have been ordinarly connected to the stopper by means oi a corkscrew'and frequently these corkscrews pull out of the Stoppers so that the stopper is not withdrawn from the bottle or container. This is particularly true after the stopper becomes dry from age.
llt is the purpose ot my invention to construct a stopper so as to insure the removal ot the stopper by means of a pull on the bottle or centainer and to permit a certain amount of adiustment ot the stopper transversely to insure a tight fit in the neck'of the bottle or container,
. With these and other objects in view th-e -invention consists 1n ycertain novel features ot construction, and combinations. and ar-' as will be more fully rangements ot parts, hereinafter described andpointed out in the claims. Y Y
In .the accompanying drawingsy Figure 1 is a perspectivev view illustrating onetorm ot my invention.
Figure 2 is aV view in'longitudinal sec- Y the neck of a bottle. y p v Figure 3 vis a perspective view similar to Figure 1 illustrating a modification.
Figures 4--5,y 6-7, and 8 9 are illustrating other modifications. i
Referring particularly to Figures 1 and 2, 1 represents my improved stopper which is although it may be made views York and 11, 1920. Serial No. 423,457.
of any other suitablematerial, and which is preterablyfo't slightly conicalV or tapering form t0 fit within the neck Q of a bottle er "container' y Y rFhe stopper 1 is provided centrally with screw 5 a longitudinal opening 4 to receive T l and l would have it understood that' preferably, provideV Vthe opening; l 'ot less diameter than the diameter ot the screw se that the teeth et the screw bite into the walls of the opening. A washer 6 is interposed between the head l ci screw 5 and the lower end orp the stopper 1 and a similar washer 8 is provided on the screw at the upper end of the stopper.
Onthe upper end oi the screw 5 l secure a bail Q4; by means of a nut 2. rlhis bail 24 is preferably termed of a strip of sheet metal bent into general oblong shape with its perforated ends 26 overlapping' and re* ceiving the end of 25, which is angular in orm, lits snugly between the side members oi the bail 24. and screws onto the screw 5, so that the bail operates as a wrench to turn the nut and adjust the same on the screw as may be desired.
In the modiiication illustrated in Figure 3 I provide a nut 9 of cylindrical form on the upper end of the screw 5, said nut having sockets 10 in its opposite sides receiving the inwardly bent ends 11 ofa wire bail 12. The upper end of the screw 5 is perforated, as shown at 13, for the reception et a cot'- ter pin 14 to prevent possibility of accidental removal oi the nut 9.
The bail 12 serves the double purpose of a 4connecting medium to connect the stopper with a fixed support in any approved Inanner, and also operates as a finger hold toV permit the nut to be turned on the screw.v
When the nut is screwed home, it operates to draw the washers 6 and 8 toward each other, andthis movement ot the washers compresses the stopper 1 longitudinally and expands it transversely so that an adjustment can be had to' insure the desired lit u A Ypull on the bailY the screw and the nutl by reason of the arrangeT77 described,Av there can Vbe no possibility of thejaccidental' removal ojthe bail without removing Figures and 5, the'ibail portion Vla is made integral with a nut 15. y Y
the stopper withY .In the modified ferm of nut illustrated in the bail l2 of the preferred form,V Itis, of
Vto receive the screw 5,
lln thewmodification illustrated-inligiures 6 and 7,1 illustrateametal stripQO which is perforated at its intermediate portion 2l course,vto be understood that the strip QOfis" shaped, as shown in Figure 7, before inser-V i tiononthe screw 5 quickly assembled or taken apart as may be desired. Y
In the modii'ication*illustrated in Figures -Y 8 and 9, the bail 16 has its endsA projected through and secured wings 18 ofV a nut 19.
Various other slight changes might be made in the general `trm and arrangement v"oit parts described without departing'from the invention', and hence l do not'limitmyself to the precise details set forth, but. consider myself at liberty to make such'changes and alterations" as fairly fall within the spirit and scope Vof the appended claims.
Y vha-vingits outer endprojecting through the I claim: l. A device of the character stated com-l prising a stopper, avscrew mounted in 'and and a nut 22, is Y prising a headed screw in the opening of thesto per, washers on the screw at opposite ends so that the partscan be f in openings 17 in the" 1 the Vends or' Vthe rstoppeiga bail having perstopper, a bail loosely mountedon the outer i vend-of theV screw and having a portion suiV rounding the stem of the screw, a nutl on theV screw, andl lateral side portions of the bail member disposed on opposite .sides of the nut which ts snugly therebetween.
2. A device of the character stated, coma vstopper having a central opening,
of the stopper, la vbail 'havingfl-at members andV loosely lmount ontli-e'screw, and an angular nut on the' screw within the bail and engaging the membersorx the bail.
3. A device or the character stated, com-VA prisinga stopperfh'aving a central opening, a headed screw located `walls of said opening,
washers on the respective ends of the screw located against forated overlapping ends receiving `one end or' the screw, and a nut v:Fitting within the bail and engaging the end of the screw.
4l. A device or" .the character stated, com.- prising a stopper, a screw extending flongi tudinally through the stopper, a baillcom-V prising a strip of metal having overlapping perforated ends 'receiving one end of the screw, and an angular nul-fitting between in. and engaging theV the side members of the bail and having threaded engagement with the screw;
