Description

H. J. OBOYLIE PANEL FOR LAMP SHADES Filed July 18 1922 HUGH d'. OBOYLE, 0F SAN NTQNEQ, TE.
, PANEL FR LAMP SEMES.
Application iled July 18, 1922. Serial llo. 575,919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, HUGH J. OBOYLE, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of rllexas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Panels for Lamp Shades; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en-v able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to lamp shades and more particularly to panels for lam shades wherein semi-transparent photograp or advertising matter may be displayed, the shade being artistically designed for utilitarian as well as display purposes, vand the object of my invention is to provide a simple shade of this character wherein the decorative features may in part be changed at will and without in any way destroying the shade;
ln the drawings, Figure 1 shows a lamp shade constructed in accordance vwith my invention, the view being one in side elevation. Figure 2 is a'detail perspective showing the 25 parts forming a single panel, and Figure 3 is a similar vie-w showing the frame for supporting the parts shown in Figure 3.
As shown, myimproved lamp shade includes a series of top panels 1 and a series of side panels 2, the numbers of these being optional. The to panels are usually formed of one or two t icknesses of silk or other fabric, the side panels being designed for display purposes. Each of these side panels or such' number as may be desired, preferably comprises a sheet of uniigured silk or other fabric 3 and next to this a sheet 4f of glass or other approximately rigid and transparent material, a colored or plain photograph or picture or other display medium 5 which is made on semitransp-arent paper, parchment, cloth, film or glass is then laid upon the sheet 4 and over this display medium is placed a second sheet 6 of glass or other approximately rigid and transparent material, a second sheet of unfigured silk or other fabric 7 forming the-exposed face of the panel. Sheets of glass, or such approximately rigid and transparent material as may be used form a mat upon which the display sheet is placed. The parts just described are then placed within a. frame 8 which is grooved along three of its edges, as shown at 9, Figure 3, and slotted along its tourth edge, as at l0, this slotted edge having clamps 12 to close the recess and prevent displacement of the parts forming the panel. llt is manifest that other arrangements of the silk and glass elements of thel panel may be provided and it is equally clear that the semi-transparent pictures may from time to time he changed at the pleasure of the user so that various photographed scenes or pictures or advertising matter may be displayed. ln the 'arrangement shown in the drawings l have found that best results are obtained by using well woven plain Silks, colored or not, and glass which is clear and transparent, or a colored transparent glass.
The advantages of my invention, and its decorative features, as well as the fact that it may be used for advertising purposes by substituting an artistic advertisement on a semi-transparent paper or glass will be apparent.
ll claim as my invention:
l. A display panel for lamp shades including a sheet of semi-transparent material containing the matter to be displayed, a sheet of transparent material forming a mat upon which said semi-transparent material is placed, a sheet of iiexible material placed over said mat sheet for decorative purposes, and a frame for interchangeably supporting said sheets.
2. A display panel for lamp shades including a sheet of semi-transparent material containing the matter to be displayed, sheets of transparent materia-l forming a support for said semi-transparent sheet and between which it is placed, sheets of flexible transparent material placed over said transparent support sheets for decorative purposes, and a ed' frame for interchangeably supporting all said sheets.
ln testimony whereof l have signed this specition.
HUG J. UBOYLE.
