' A. MASSEY ET AL 4 PICKER STI-CK CHECK Filed Nov. 28, 1921 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTORS" Patented ululy 24-, 1923.
altar rarest PICKER-STICK CHECK.
Application filed November 28, 1921 Serial No. 518,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AMnnnn Massn'zand Anton BnNsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picker-Stick Checks, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention pertains to looms and more particularly to looms of the Draper type, and it contemplates the provision of a check through the medium of which the picker stick is placed under tension during movements of the shuttle in the shuttle box.
The invention further contemplates a check that is simple and inexpensive in constrnction and one that is well adapted to withstand rough usage.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our novel tension means as applied to a portion of a loom.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken in the plane indicated by line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing the left hand tension means.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken in the plane 3-?) of Figure 1 and showing the right hand tension means.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken in the plane indicated by line 44: of Figure 1 and showing the left hand tension means and its relation to its complementary picker stick.
Figure 5, is a sectional view taken in the plane indicated by line 55 of Figure 1 and showing the relation of the right hand tension means and its complementary picker stick.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
The right and left hand picker sticks 1 as well as the picker 2 thereof are of the ordinary well known construction and as illustrated are properly positioned with respect to the loom lay A. Mounted on and adapted to move with respect to the lay within the box 4:, is the shuttle 3.
Our novel left hand tension 5 is bolted or otherwise secured to the lay A and adapted to be secured in adjustable manner thereto. It will be manifest that the tension means is adapted for connection to various styles of lays as the case may be.
The tension means 5 comprises a body 69 provided with the bent end portions 8 that abut the lower surface of the lay and assist in retaining the body 5 in rigid manner on the lay A. Formed integral on the portion 5 is a hanger 7 that is bent parallel with respect to the bent end portions 8, at its lower end as indicated'by- 9.
The construction so far set forth is duplicated on, the opposite side of the lay as shown in Figure 4 and thetwo sections 5 are bolted to the lay by the one bolttS.v Provided on the bent portion 9 ofhangers 7- areorifices 9 through which pass boltsor other means 10 and the said bolts also enter parallel arms 11 that extend beyond the outer limit of motion of the picker stick and secured at their outer ends toeach other by the bolt 12.
Interposed between the parallel arms 11 on the bolt 12 are washers 12 of leather or other suitable material that receives the thrust and check the movement of the picker stick.
The tension members 11 are formed of wood or other suitable material and hence the constant thrust of the picker stick will subject the tension members to strain beyond their ability to withstand the same.
Moreover the construction of the tension means and the washer interposed on the bolt 12 will assist in materially forcing in a quick manner the picker stick to cause same to rebound to the right after striking the washers.
Secured on the opposite end of the lay is the right hand tension means that comprises the body portion 13 bolted or otherwise arranged on the lay as indicated by 14 and the body portion 13 is provided with the bent ends 16 that bear on the underside of the lay for the same purpose as the portions 8 of member 5.
The body portion 13 is provided with the integral hanger portion 15 having a lower bent end 17 provided with the orifice 18 that receives a bolt 19 which in turn passes through one end of the parallel arms 20 of wood, or other similar material that are identical in construction to arms 11, above referred to. Arranged parallel with arms are arms 21 and said arms20 and 21 are I s secured at one end to each other by bolt 22.
Interposed on the bolt 22, between the series of arms 20 and 21 are washers 12 of leather or suitable cushioning material adapted to receive the thrust of the picker stick and secured to the free ends of arms 21 is a head portion that is held in proper position by means of the bolt 24.
A bolt for the purpose of reinforcing the head passes through as indicated by 23.
In the practical use of the invention it will be manifest that the outward thrust of the picker sticks against the washers of the bolts is to limit the motion of the sticks during operation of the loom. It will also be seen that said Washers will assist in causing a quick rebound of the picker sticks and be cause ofthe fact that the arms 11 20 and 21 wooden arms for the well known leather strap at present in use, assures a longer life and even and steady operation of the loom.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
1. In check mechanism, the combination of a loom, a body portion having a head secured to the loom, parallel spaced arms secured to the body, a bolt for securing the arms to each other, washers arranged on the bolt between the arms, a head secured on the arms and means for securing the head to said arms.
2. In means for the purpose set forth, the combination of body members adapted to be secured to the lay of a loom, downwardly depending portions secured to the body members, abutments "formed on the body, members, arms adapted to receive a picker stick therebetween, hangers depending from the body members, arms secured a the hangers, and a head secured to the arms.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
AMEDEE MASSEY.
