Description

M 124, 1923. mazwz J. L. SCHAEFER SANITARY TOILET SEAT COVER Filed Aug. 11, 1922 A TTORA/E VS Patented July 24, l@23;
' panacea JOHN L. SCHAEFEE, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
SANITARY TOILET-SEAT COVER.
Application filed August 11, 1922. Serial No. 581,272.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L, SCHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, inthe county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sanitary Toilet-Seat Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to covers for toilet seats and aims to provide a sanitary covering element which'is designed to be destroyed after having been used once in order to insure the user thereof against infectious diseases, dirt or the like. 7
As a further object the invention contemplates the provision of a, cover of the character described which is provided with protective tabs adapted to extend into the interior of the bowl and lying at the front and rear thereof for the purpose of preventing the contact of the person with the bowl and the soiling of the bowl by excrement.
The invention furthermore contemplates a cover of the character set forth in which the depending tabs are designed to extend downwardly for submerging in the water whereby upon flushing of the toilet, said tabs will serve as a means for drawing the cover into the bowl and disposing of the same through the outlet thereof.
As a still further object the invention contemplates as a new article of manufacture, a
- seat cover having tabs constructed integral therewith which are cut therefrom in such a manner as to obtain a maximum length, which tabs when bent with respect to the seat covering portion afford a central opening or passage conforming substantially to the central opening or passage of the toilet seat.
The invention furthermore contemplates a device of the character described which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture and which is thoroughly reliable and highly efiicient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general the cover member.
meaning of the terms in' which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a toilet bowl and seat illustrating a seat cover constructed in accordance with the invention, in applied position thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the seat cover removed and prior to the bending of the tabs. I
Figure 3, is a sectional view through the seat cover taken approximately on the line 33 of Figure 2.-
Figure 4 is a similar view taken approximately on the line 4 1 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a toilet bowl, 11 the usual form of pivoted seat provided with a central opening or passage 12 and 13 the outlet which constitutes a trap for maintaining the water 14: at a predetermined level in the bowl.
The seat cover constituting the invention designated generally by the reference character 15, consists of a flat sheet of material such as paper which is readily absorbed by water to permit of its disposal through the bowl outlet. The same is preferably cut to conform to the configuration of the seat 11 and the same is provided with arcuat e slits 16 which are oppositely disposed and arranged in parallel relation to the side edges 'of the cover. A diagonal slit 17 intersects the central portion of the seat cover and the opposite ends of said. diagonal slit terminates at its opposite ends slightly from the terminal of one of the arcuate slits 16 an a preciable distance from the terminal 0 the other slit to provide a short connecting portion 18 at the apex of the tabs 19 which are defined by said slits.
Under this arrangement and construction, the use of the cover is as follows :-The short connecting portions at the apex of each tab are broken and the tabs are respectively folded downwardly along the dotted line 20 to depend respectively from the forward and rear portions of the cover member to pro vide a central opening or passage 21 through The seat member which is then of annular formation correspondin to the configuration of the seat 11 is arranged thereover with the tabs 19 depending through the central opening 12 thereof into the bowl 10 and with the apices or lower endssubmerged in the water 141. This serves to hold the annular body of the seat cover in juxtaposition to the seat until the user is seated at which time the annular body of the cover will closely conform to the face of the seat. This insures to the user a clean and sanitary seat by reventing contact of the body with the surf ce of the seat while the depending tabs afford protection against the contact of the person with the inner side of the bowl and precludes the soiling of the bowl by excrement. After the seat cover has been used,-
the same will be automatically disposed of upon flushing of the toilet by the force of the water cooperating with the submerged lower ends of the tabto draw the seat cover down into the bowl and through the outlet 13. This operation will be accomplished either by a front or rear flushing toilet and obviates the necessity of the user having to handle the cover after use. v
The seatcovers may be folded'into a compact package which can be vended from suitable vending machines for the purpose or may be carried in the pocket of the user.
I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a'
sanitary toilet seat cover embodying a sheet of material having a'slit extending diagonally from front to rear and arcuate slits in opposed relation at opposite sides ofthe central diagonal slit, said arcuate slits resgectively joining at opposite terminals with t e diagonal slit to provide oppositely bendable tabs, as and for the purpose specified.
'2. A sanitary toilet seat cover consisting of a sheet of material having oppositely disregistry with the opening of'the toilet seat.
3. A sanitary toilet seat cover consisting v ofa sheet of material having oppositely disposed arcuate side slits and a "diagonal central slit extending from fr'ont to rear, one end of said central slit connecting at its opposite terminals respectively with one end of each arcuate slot to provide a pair ofiintegral tabs adapted to be bent downwardly from the front and rear'of the sheet cover to provide a central opening therethrough for registry with the opening of the toilet seat, the lower ends of said tabs adapted to be submerged in the water in the, bowl for initially holding the cover ing of the bowl, for effecting the drawing of the cover into the same for automatic disposal thereof.
- JOHN L. SCHAEFER.
