Description

Jan. 21;i 1930. EWAIDE 1,744,300
` SANIJLARYA TOILET SEAT COVER Filed May 29, 1028 2 shams-sheet'I 2 Patented Jan. .215, 1930 PATENT OFFICE HAL 'DEWAIDE vOIE' PORTLAND, OREGON SANITRY TOILET-SEAT CVER I Application lei May 29, 1928.- Serial No. V281,386.
The object of my invention is to provide a sanitary toilet seat Cover'made of tissue `paper or the like for use in connection withl the water flushed toilet nowin common use. The cover to be adapted for being readily manufactured in large quantitiesv by cutting y a plurality or stackof sheets in a single mey chanical stamping operation, so that the seatcover may be made at a very low cost and sold at a very low price.
Furthermore to provide a sanitary toiletseat `cover'which is so constructed that when used al1-integral portion thereof,` which for convenience I will refer to as the carry-off section, will lie in the waterof'the bowl, and
thus when the bowl is flushed the drag of the Water on this carry-offsection will pull the vcover olf theseat of thetoilet fixture and downJ vthe discharge pipe thereof; and that this eii'iect will be assured Without fail.
In order tov attain the latter'result, it is necessary that the said carry-off section of the cover be ofsubstantial length, for other- D, wise the drag of the water on said section in d the flushing of the bowl, may not be sufficient;
and indeed, as my own experiences have proved, when the carry-oil' section of the cover is of insuhicient length, the .drag exerted on 1t n by thc Hush of the water may not be sufiicient "Q to overcome the `suctional resistance of the cover on `the toilet seat, and in consequence the vcover will not be disposed of except by Iy attain my object. in a seat cover con ijstric, of convenient size having the central po'rtion-corresponding approximatelyr with the opening of the toilet seat, partially severed ,l so that it will provide an integral portion which may be readily separated from the body of the sheet, and, having further an integral, partially severedand readily separable carry-offlsection, of substantial length when eX- tended, so that said section is adapted to be dropped into the center of the bowl'of the toilet before the outlet fixture.
Preferably, I make the said earryaof section a part of said central portion, arrang- '50 ing the severing element of the latter so as to the sanitary cover on thetoilet Seat.
being iirst pulled from the toilet seat by hand."
ing of a single sheet of paper or suitable aba readily separable section lying Wholly with' in the areaof said central portion, whereby .when said separable portions are separated from the body of the sheet and from each other, the said centralA portion will drop down into and the said carry-o section will extend therefrom a substantial distance in the center of the bowl' and directly before the outlet.
liurtherinore, it is preferable to make the u toilet seat cover With'said carry-off part connected to the remainder. of the sheet by uncut web sections readily broken and so located as tobe broken by the user of the. cover in sitting down on the same, after having placed In short, Athe readily broken web connections make it convenient for the handling of the sheet; and the `said web sections should be so arranged that they do not have to be manually broken, but will be broken in the use of the sheet as mentioned, so that the said carryoff portion will automatically drop into the toilet bowl. To this end,'the said web sections 'must be located at the sides of said carry-olf part. lf located at the end of this part, the connecting web would generally have to be manually broken. 4
Furthermore the said carry-olf part should have ample surface area to insure that the drag of thevvater in lushing will be sutlicient to pull the cover oif the seat.
In either construction when the bowl of the toilet seat in flushed, the drag of the water on said carry-off section will pull theV seat cover olf the toi-let seataiid dispose of it by carrying it down the discharge pipeof thetoilet fixture. I
Furthermore as above mentioned, my sanitary cover may be produced by Aa single operation in this respect differing from all previous sanitary toilet seat covers of which lf have any knowledge. Y
The details of the construction of my sanitary toiletseat cover, li have hereinafter de- In said drawings Fig. l shows a perspective view of my seat cover, in its unused state;
Fig. 2 shows a perspective View of my s eat cover in its separated or operative position;
Fig. 3'shows a side elevation of a toilet bowl partly in section and illustrates my seat coier, about to be dragged oil by the water; an
Figsi: and 5 show a modification of my invention and illustrates another method of forming the central portion.
Referring now to Figs. l, 2 and 3, my invention comprises a more or less rectangular sheet a of suitable, light and economical paper, as tissue paper, out as at b by stamping to form a centra portion lc conforming more or less to the contour of the toilet seat, except at b which is uncut and serves to connect the carr portion c thus formed to the outer portion of the sheet. Smaller uncut sections b2 are also provided which are easily severable, but hold the section c in place until the seat cover is to be used.
*Another similar cut d is made, entirely Within the portion c, also provided with an uncut section c to connect the portion e -so formed to the portion c oppositely to the uncut ortion b of the portion c, and easily severa le uncut connecting sections c2 are provided, similar tothe severable sections 'bi of the portion c.
The uncut connecting webs b2 are located at the sides of the sheet, and are thus directly subject to, and broken by the pressure of the person in sitting down on the seat, after the cover has been placed on the toilet seat.
In use my cover will be arranged on the seat as illustrated by Figs. 2 and 3, with the uncut connecting sections Z22 at the sides; whereby the latter, as well as the temporary web connection c2 of the portion e will be readily broken by the user as described.
The portions c and c thus detached will become arranged as shown by Figs. 2 and 3 so as to lie in the water of the b'owl, and the flushing of the latter will cause the cover to be pulled off the seat, and automatically disposed of, without any handling of the cover.
It will be noted that the portion e is given considerable width which is done to expose am le surface to the drag of the water. It wil be further noted that the parts c and e, and the connection of the part cto the main portion of the cover, also the connection of the part e with the part c are so arranged as to take advantage of the full tensile strength of the aper.
Furt er, by this construction my toilet seat cover is adapted to have the car olf portion e not only lie in the water but 1n the center of the bowl directly before the outlet 5 so that the drag of the water will be certain to away the cover, and there will be no ten ency for the portion e to cling to the sides of the bowl and thus prevent the seat cover from being carried away.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, l have shown a modiiication of my sanitary seat cover, cut at 2b to form a central section 2d more or less of the shape of the toilet seat. The said cut 2b-is prolonged as at 2C, thru the center of the portion 2d, thus forming the carry-olf section 2g. Small uncut but easily severable portions 2f are provided, which when broken will permit the central portions 2 and 2g to hang down into the water and be dragged away as before described by the flushing of the toilet bowl.
I claim:
1. A sanitary toilet-seat Cover comprising a sheet having a central oval portion readily detached to form a central opening in said sheet, said central portion being connected to the sheet at one end, and by breakable connections at its sides to the sides of the sheet,
said central portion comprising two members adapted to beI extended substantially end to end, whereby upon breaking said breakable connections, said central portion may be arranged to form an elongate strip of substanf by breakable connections at its sides to the sides of the sheet, and an inner piece encomppassed by said annular piece and connected to the latter at one end and at the other end by a readily breakable connection, whereby, upon breaking said breakable cbnnections, the said annular piece and inner pieceiof said central portion may be arranged to form an elongate strip of substantial length pendent in and lying along the longitudinal center of the bowl of the toilet fixture, and in front of the outlet of said bowl, thus subjecting said strip to the drag of the water flushing the 1 bowl, and in that way removing and disposing of the sanitary cover.
`HAL DEVVAIDE.
