Description
' C, MORGAN. Combined Bedsteads and Brihs. 145 5 Patent ed lan.6,i1874.
Fig 5 w a WW- all UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon,
CHARLES MORGAN, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BEDS'TEADS AND CRIBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,265, dated January 6, 1874; application filed July 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MORGAN, of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Childs Crib, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of bedsteads in which a childs crib or smaller bedstead is combined with an ordinary bedstead; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement of the parts of the main bedstead, whereby one of the side-boards of the said main bedstead, while it supports the slats of the main bedstead, is so arranged that the outer portion of the same shall be capable of being drawn and folded out, so as to form the side and foot boards of the crib or smaller bed; stead, while at the same time it supports one end of a series of sliding slats arranged beneaththe main slats, such second series at their opposite ends being supported bythe stationary portion of the main side-board. The head-board of the crib slides in a groove or channel formed in the main head-rail. The head-board of the crib in some cases may be formed by a separate portion pivoted to one of the head-posts of the main bedstead.
But that my invention may be fully understood, I will describe the same in detail by and of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a portion of a plan, of a bedstead with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail view of parts of the same.
A A represent the posts of the main bedstead, and B one of the side-boards of the same, which, while it supports the main slats a a, is so arranged that the outer portion C of the sameis capable of being drawn out to form the side of a crib or smaller bedstead, while the portion D is hinged to the sideboard E, so as to be capable of being folded out to form the foot-board and support of the crib. The part C, at c, is formed with a projecting portion, which, when the parts C D are not in use, fits into a corresponding recess in the part D, but when the parts are in operation, as shown at Fig. 2, the projection c fits into a corresponding recess, 01, in the part D, as shown at Fig. 2. b b are the slats of the crib, which are supported at one end by means of the portion C, while at their opposite ends they are connected together by a strip, H, and are supported with capability of sliding in grooves or channels in the main portion of the side-board B. E represents the head-board of the crib, which is arranged to slide in a groove or channel, E, in the main head-rail. F is an ornamental head-board, which may be employed in place of or in addition to the sliding board E of the crib. The board F is pivoted to the main post A at 1,
and when in use is turned into the position shown by Fig. 3, and there retained by a springcatch, or other suitable means, but when the crib is not required it is turned on its axis out of sight.
The operation of the parts is as follows: When the crib is required for use, the part C, with its slats b and head-rail E, is drawn forward, and the part D folded into the position shown by Figs. 2 and 3. When the headboard F is employed, the same is then turned into position, as shown by Fig. 3, and the crib is ready for the reception of the necessary bedding. When not required, the reverse motions are effected, and the parts will assume the positions indicated by Fig. 1.
By this arrangement it will be seen that I am enabled to produce a very cheap and durable combined bedstead and crib, which in addition is much lighter and capable of being rendered more ornamental than anyexisting arrangement with which I am acquainted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the side-board B, of a bedstead provided with a second series of sliding slats, b b, of the divided outer portion C D, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a bedstead provided with a second series of sliding slats, b b, the combination, with a sideboard, B, constructed with an outer portion C D, arranged and operating as described, of the pivoted head-board F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES MORGAN.
