ANDREW G. HILDRETH, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATIDON OVERALLS.
Application mea February as, 1921. serial no. 447,775.
To all 'whom it may conm:
Be it known that I, ANDREW G. HILDRETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at orcester, in the county of Worcester and 5 State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combination Overalls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to working garments commonly termed combination or and comprising broadly a lower or pants se'ction and a coat section permanently connected together. Such garments, While possessing many advantages, are found to shrink greatly in washing, so they cannot thereafter be worn comfortably by the person whom they previously fitted. But if they are made long enough in the waist or middle portion to allow for such shrinkage they cannot be comfortably or conveniently worn before shrinkage.
It is the object of myinvention to provide a construction in combination overalls by which surplus material is made available to restore the length of the garment after shrinkage is caused by washing.
For this purpose I provide a fold or pleat of surplus material extending around the garment at or near the Waist and temporarily secured in folded condition in any suitable manner as by stitching the fold to the belt. After the garment shrinks, the temporary stitching is removed and the garment is thus restored to its original length.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings. in which Fig. 1 is a partial front elevation ofc my improved garment;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view but showing the parts in a different position.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown combination overalls comprising a lower or pants section 10 and an upper or coat section 11, the garment being arranged to be opened and closed along the line 12, and being provided with suitable buttons or fasteners 13.
The adjacent portions of the sections 10 and 11 are shown as permanently secured together by a belt connection comprising an outer belt 14 and an inner belt 15 secured to the sections 10 and 11 by rows of stitching 16 and 17.
The coatV section 11 is preferably made longer than is desirable in proportion to its other` dimensions, and the surplus material' is disposed in a fold or pleat 18 (Fig. 2) extending around the garment and temporarily secured by an additional row of stitching 19 which holds the surplus material in folded posltion. f
After the garment has been Washed, when 1t is desired to restore the length lost by i shrinkage, it is merely necessary'to sever the temporary stitching 19, releasing the fold 18. The parts then assume the relative position shown in Fig. 3, and the garment is lengthened by the amount of surplus material contained in the fold 18.
By this construction it is possible to have a Well fitting and well-proportioned garment both before and after washing and shrinkage of the material.
Having thus described my invention, it will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art within the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the claim, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details disclosed, but what I claim is As an article of manufacture, combina` tion overalls comprising an upper coat section, a lower pants section, a belt portion formed of two thicknesses of material permanently enclosing and connecting the adjacent edges of said upper and lower gar-y ment sections, and closing means for said garment. said upper coat section having a portion of its material adjacent its lower edge formed as a. surplus fold originally and temporarily secured to the upper edge of said belt portion by separate and additional stitching and readlly releasable from folded condition to increase the effective length ofv the garment without disturbing the permanent connection of said belt portion to said upper and lower garment sections.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
ANDREW G. HILDRETH.
