Description

E. A. GQSNELL IGNITION DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed NOV. 50 1921 1214* oz Z Patented July 10, 1923.
srrss IGNITION DEVICE INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed November 30, 1921. Serial No. 518,905.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. GosNnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burkburnett, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition Devices for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ignition devices for internal combustion engines and.
has for its principal object to provide means whereby two or more electrodes, spark plugs or other ignition devices may be used in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine including means for keeping such electrodes, spark plugs or other ignition devices when not in use from becoming soiled by soot, carbon deposits or oil. The numerous advantages besides the above, resulting from the use of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art from the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan of the device showing a cylinder of an internal combustion engine fragmentarily.
Figure 2- is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figures 3 and 4 are sections taken on the lines 33 and a e of Figure 2 respectively.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the plug 2 is provided with two or more ports 3 the entrance to which are screw threaded for receiving the spark plugs 4t and 5. This plug 2 is threadedlv mounted in a port provided in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine and said port is situated adjacent the wall'of the cylinder for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
A valve member indicated generally at 6 is provided in connection with the plug and consists of the stem 7 which is rotatably mounted in the plug so as to extend through a bore provided therein and upon the lower end of this stem 7 there is fixed a valve plate 8 which is adapted to close the bottom ends of either of the ports 3 at which time it will be in abutment with the side wall of the cylinder as is disclosed to advantage in Figures 2 and 4:. In order to hold the valve plate 8 in snumengagement with the bottom of the plug 2:1 have provided an expansible coil spring 9 about the upper end of the valve stem 7 which normally tends to expand so as to pull upwardly on the stem 7 and thereby hold the valve plate 8 in abutting relation with the bottom of the plug 2. A lever 10 is keyed to the upper end of the stem 7 for rotating the same thereby moving the plate 8 so as to cover either of the ports 3 at the bottom end of the plug 2. I have positioned the main port for the plug 2 adjacent the side wall of the cylinder in such a manner that when the plate 8 is in alignment with one of the ports 3 so as to close the same it will abut this side wall so that the operator of the device will know when the ports are closed without the necessity of removing the spark plugs 4: or 5.
Of course it is to be understood that my. invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but includes within its pervue such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. In combination with a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, a plug threadedly mounted therein adjacent its side wall and provided with two or more ports extending therethrough and having threads at their upper ends, sparking devices mounted in the threaded ends of the ports, a valve plate mounted on the bottom face of the plug for closing either of the plugs thereof and means for rotating the plate, said plate being pivotally mounted so as to abut the side wall of the cylinder when closing one of the ports in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a cylinder of an internal combustion engine provided with a port opening adjacent its side wall, a plug threadedly mounted in the port and provided with a. pair of ports adapted to receive spark plugs, a plate for closing the bottom ends of the ports separately, a stem extending through the plug and keyed to the plate and disposed adjacent the side wall of the engine so that the plate will abut the wall when it is moved in registry with one of the ports in the plug, a spring disposed upon the upper end of the stem having one end resting on the plug and its other end engaged with the stem having a tendency to lift the same for holding the plate in firm engagement with the bottom face of the plug.
3. In combination with a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, a plug mounted therein adjacent its side wall and provided with tWo ports extending therethrough,
sparking devices mounted in the ports, a
valve plate mounted on the bottom face of the plug for closing either of the ports thereof, means for pivoting the plate, said means being disposed adjacent the Walls of the engine so that when the plate is in registry with one of the ports it Will also abut the Wall, and means for rotating the plate in the manner and-for'the purpose specified. 1 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
