R. R. SENOUR AND L. T. WHITE. SPARK PLUG PACKING. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 13, 1921 1,400,464. Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
INVENTORJ'.
A T T ORNEYJZ Cir UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROY R. SENOUR AN D LAWRENCE '1. WHITE, 01: PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
SPARK-PLUG PACKING.
Application filed January 18, 1921.
ll '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROY R. Simone and LAWRENCE T. WHITE, citizens of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Plug Paekings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a packing for spark plugs used in internal combustion engines and inserted in the heads of the engine cylinders.
It is the object of the invention to provide means for preventing the accumulation of sand, grit and dirt around the projecting end of the spark plug, the invention being particularly adaptable to the type of engine in which the spark plugs are inserted in the cylinder heads.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description. of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. perspective View of aportion of an internal combustion egnine with the spark plug inserted in the cylinder head and having the improved packing surrounding the same.
Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings we have illustrated ausual internal combustion engine construction including cylinder head 1 having water jacket 2 received over the same. As is usual in a construction of this character, the outer surface of a water jacket is recessed as shown at 3 so that a usual spark plug 4 may be threaded through the cylinder head so as to extend into the cylinder. The recess as thus provided is usually of frustoconical shape. The packing employed in connection with spark plug 4 is received around the same and is seated in recess 3 so as to prevent the accumulation of dirt in said recess.
The packing, preferably, consists of an annular ring 5 which may be of metal and packing material 6 at the under side of said ring conforming to the shape of recess 3. It will be understood that the packing and the annular ring are provided with axial openings through which the spark plugs extend. The packing may be held to the annular ring by means of connecting members shown as rivets 7 extending through plate 5 and through the packing material.
The packing material 6 is, preferably, a

fibrous material such as felt which has a nap, this nap being adapted to provide an intimate contact between the packing and the wall of the recess. The packing is, preferably, impregnated with a suitable oil so as to afford further means for preventing the passage of dirt and sand between the packing and the wall of recess 3.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with a cylinder head having a recess and a. spark plug extending through said cylinder head at the base of said recess, of a packing member received over said plug and sealed in said recess.
2. The combination with a cylinder head having a. recess and a spark plug extending through said cylinder head at the base of said recess, of an annular packing member conforming to said recess and received over said plug so as to seat in the recess.
3. The combination with a cylinder head having a recess and a spark plug extending through said cylinder head at the base of said recess, of a packing member received over said plug and sealed in said recess, said packing member being formed of fibrous material having a nap.
4. The combination with a cylinder head having a recess and a spark plug extending through said cylinder head at the base of said recess, of a packing member received over said plug and sealed in said recess, said packing member being formed of fibrous material impregnated with oil.
5. A. packing member comprising an annular ring and an annular packing of fibrous material received against one face thereof.
6. A packing member comprising an annular ring and an annular packing of fibrous material received against one face thereof, and means for connecting said fibrous material and ring.
7. A packing member comprising an annular ring and an annular packing of fibrous material received against one face thereof, said fibrous material having a nap and being impregnated with oil.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
ROY R. SENOUR. LAWRENCE T. WHITE.
