IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIERS. y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,038, dated December 30,1873; application led August 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WENDELIN WEIS, of St. Paul city, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Egg-Carrier, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical sect-ion of my improved eggcarrier on the line c c of Fig. 2, showing attachment of top and arrangement of cells. Fig. 2 is a top view of case with cover detached. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the interlacing strips, and Figs. 5 and 6 a modification of the same.

The object of my invention is to improve the eggcarriers in such a manner that not only the eggs 'are securely packed in the cells, but also the cover connected to the case, in such a manner that it may be easily placed' on or taken off without breaking or splitting the same.
My invention is an improvement upon the egg-carrier of A. H. Bryant, patented J une 3, 1873. I employ two sets or series of strips, one of which is slitted like Bryants. The slits in the other strips do not extend through or to the edge, and have peculiarly-arranged eXtensions. Thus these strips are not materially weakened by said slits, while the other strips, having edge slits, may be readily inserted through them and supported vertically therein, thus securing durability, strength, and efy iiency of the carrier as a whole.
In the drawing, A represents the case of the egg-carrier, in which are arranged in tiers,
placed one above the other, the cells for the eggs, which are formed of parallel strips B of y one series, and interlacing strips C of the other series vertically tothein. The strips B are provided with slits a cut from each edge toward the center under right angles to it, leaving the' central part undivided. The strips C are provided with a central slit, b, of the same Width as the uncut part of the strips B, together with a narrow oval or V-shaped aperture, bf, being stamped out of strips G in a direction vertical to slit b, through which the strips B are, by bending them, introduced and adjusted, so as to interlock and form a tier of cells, which may be easily lifted from the case without detaching from each other. y A modiication of this connection is shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in which the strips C have slits b with irregularV side extensions b', one under a suitable angle to the central slit, the other underV right angles to it, the full length being equal to the cross-strips B, which are slipped through under the inclination required, and then placed vertically to stripsC, forming also a rigidly interlocking and secure construction of the cells. rlhe top or cover D of case A is provided with two side strips, d, which slip along the side of case A, and rest on the side strips d of the same. The band-springs E are centrally attached to top D and side strips d, and eX- tend downward ending in spear-shaped heads c, which pass through the recesses e' of strips d', and lock on metallic bands f applied across recesses e at the lower edge of the strips d. The top D is connected to tcase A by merely slipping springs E down, till they interlock with bands f, forming a firm and safe attachment of top and case, and obtaining a permanent egg-carrier without injury to the top by nails, screws, &c.
0n detaching the top, the springs are pressed back and the top lifted off. The top may, in this manner, be quickly placed on the case, and taken off without loss of time, and .without splitting or otherwise breakingthe same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iat ent- The combination ofthe strips B, having open edge slots a, with the stripsr C, having the closed slots b, with extensions b arranged at an angle thereto, all as shown and described.
