IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,988, dated December 30, 1873; application filed November 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SAMUEL OHARD, of Mianus, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish convenient and eflicient means for holding window-sashes in any desired position, and for fastening them when they are down; and it consists in a spring-catch having a circular face attached to a bed-plate by a movable knob-pivot on which it works eccentrically.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation, aportion of the stopcasin g being broken away in the drawing, the holder being seen in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line :19 :1).

A is the sash, to which the holder is attached. B is the jamb-casing, against which the holder bears. C is the stop-casing, which confines the sash. D is a plate, of sheet metal, to which the holding-catch and spring are attached. This sash is cut away to receive the catch and spring, and the plate is fastened to the sash with screws, as seen in Fig. 1. E is the catch. This catch is confined to the plate D by a knob-pivot, F, which slides in the slot Gr in the plate. H is the lip of the catch, (or it forms the face thereof,) which face is the are of a circle, and is serrated so that it will more readily catch and hold the sash. This lip or serrated piece bears against the jamb of the window, and is forced forward by the spring I, whose pressure is constant against the back end of the catch-plate. The sash is raised by pushing back the catch by means of the knob J which releases the lip. The catch is held back until the sash is in the desired position, when the knob is let go. The pressure of the spring is designed to counteract the weight of the sash to some extent, but the catch being free to turn on its knob-pivot acts as an eccentric and securely holds the sash. When the sash is entirely down the catch acts in the same manner, or as an eccentric, and the sash cannot be raised until the catch is forced back by means of the knob.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The knob-pivot F, springs I, and slotted plate D, in combination with an eccentricallyacting sash-holder, arranged substantially as set forth, for the purposes described.
