DISPLAY CARTON.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JoHN 'V. Home, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and 6 State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display Can tons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a display car- 1 ton, by which is meant a box or container adapted to contain articles packed therein to serve as a shipping container for the articles and being specially'adapted to provide an advantageous display of the contents of the carton when the carton is positioned upon a store counter.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a display carton having a cover and an easel portlon which is hingedly con-' nected with the cover in such fashion that the cover and easel may be folded beneath the carton and the easel positioned with respect to one end of the carton to hold the same in an inclined osition.

Another object of the invention is to provide an advertising card which is hingedly secured to the body of the carton and having means associated therewith whereby the card is held in substantially upright position and prevented from falling down.

A further object of the invention is to provide a carton having an easel hingedly secured to the cover and a card having a space for advertising matter and its associated holding means, from a single blank of cardboard or other material from which the carton may be formed.

A further object is to so arrange the folded portions that in printing advertising matter on the carton, it may be printed on one side of the blank and when the blank is folded, the printed matter appears on the outside surface of the carton.

Other objects of the invention will appear more at large as the description proceeds, and generally speaking the invention may be defined as consisting of the elements and the combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.

Referring to the drawings, the body of the carton is formed with side members 1 and 2 and end members 3 and 4. The cover for the carton is indicated at 5 and is hingedly connected at one end to the body of the carton as indicated at 6. The cover 5 is provided with a bend adjacent one end thereof as indicated at 7 and beyond the bend there is a portion of the cover designated at 5 which may have advertising matter printed thereon.

The easel comprises side members 8 and 9 with a joining back member 10. The easel also has an end portion which is indicated at -11.the other end of the easel between the side members 8 and 9 is open and also there is an open space between the side members 8 and 9 opposite to the back 10;

The cover 5 is hingedly secured to the easel at .thejunction of the back 10 with the end 11. The connection is such that the easel member is hingedly connected with the cover 5 and may articulate about its hinge connection.

When the box or carton is in closed con-, dition, the cover 5 lies on top of the goods within the carton and the easel member) slips over the end of the carton which is opposite to that at which the cover member is hingedly connected.

When it is desired to utilize the carton for displayingthe contents thereof, the cover 5 is folded around the end of the carton as indicated in Fig. 1. The easel member is moved to its upright position and the upper open end of the easel is positioned adjacent an end of the carton, the sides of the easel member being inserted between the folded side members of the carton. The construction which provides the folded side members for the carton will be later described. However, it should be noted that any desired means may be employed for positioning the side members of the easel with respect to the body of the carton.

When the cover 5 is folded around thebody of the carton and the easel member po secured to the carton a card 12 which is,

adapted to receive advertising matter. This card is adapted to occupy a, substantially upright position when the carton is in open position, in order to display the advertising matter thereon.

In order to maintain the card 12 in its up right position, means is provided by which the card is positioned with respect to the carton body and maintained in such position.

The particular means embodied in the resent drawings comprises a tab 13' which 1s preferably formed integral with the card 12 or of course may be separately formed and secured to it. This tab is tucked into a slot formed in the end member 16 and held in place by a band 14 which is formed by the slot referred to in the portion of the end member 16 of the carton. As will be appreciated the frictional engagement between the tab 3 and the parts of the carton body with which it cooperates is sufiicient to hold the card 12 in its adjusted position.

Referring to Fig. 5 which shows the blank out of which the carton is formed it will be seen that the entire carton is formed from a single blank, portions of the blank being severed and other portions being creased so that they may be folded.

Particular attention is called to. the fact that the side members 1 and 2 are each provided with two score lines so that each side member of the box when in folded condition is formed of a plurality of members which notv only provides a reinforcement for the body of the carton, but also it should be noted that the fold in each side member comes at the top of the side member and the open ends of the folded portions of each side member comes adjacent the bottom of the carton. In the particular instance of construction herein described this is very convenient as it provides a place adapted to receive the ends of the sides 8 and 9 of the easel members.

Attention is further called to the fact that the end members 3 and 4 are reinforced when the box is folded by the

15 and 16 which are formed as parts of the blank. These extensions are folded against the end members 3 and 4 and have

15 and 16 which are tucked into the folds formed b the side members 1 and 2.

Thus it will e seen that the side and end members of the carton are reinforced thereby providing a rigid body for the carton which assists materially in providing a structure which is stable when the easel is in osition beneath the carton body.

t will be noted from Fig. 5 that the easel memos is formed as an extension of the cover 5 and' the hinged connection between the cover 5 and the easel is effected by scoring the blank along the line indicated at 17 in Fig. 5, thereby permitting a fold and a consequent hinged action.

It will be seen by reference to Fig. 5 that all of the portions which will form the exposed surfaces of the carton when in folded condition, lie upon the same side of the blank and hence these surfaces may be supplied with advertising matter by printing upon only one side of the blank which re quires only one printing operator.

An important feature of the present construction lies in the fact that the easel is secured to the cover consequently the easel cannot become separated from the carton and become lost as is frequently the case where cartons are formed with separate easels.

Furthermore the easel is a selfcontained structure having the end portion 11 as a base of support when in supporting position beneath the carton body and the end member 11 serving to unite at one of their ends side members 8 and 9, thereby preventing any spreading of the side members 8 and 9 which if it occur would undoubtedly cause buckling of the portion 10.

Furthermore, when the easel is in its upright position and the upper ends of the sides 8 and 9 are tucked between the folded side members of the carton, this feature gives stability to the easel and eliminates any side movement of the easel or the body of the carton. I

Having described my invention, I claim 1..A display carton, comprising a body portion having an open top, acover hingedly connected to the body portion at one end of the open top, an easel member having side members, a back ,member which joins the side members, and an end member which joins the side members, the said cover being hingedly connected at one end' thereof with the said easel member, along a line at which the end member and back member of the easel meet, the cover member being hinged to move between the back member and end member of the easel.

2. A display carton, having a body portion with an open top,-a cover hingedly connected with the body at one end of the open top, an easel member comprising side members, an end member which connects the side member and a back member which connects the side member, the said back member of the easel being formed of the same strip of material as that of the cover member, there being. a fold in the said strip of material forming the back of the easel and the said cover at the portion where the end member of the easel meets the back of the easel, that card adjacent the portion where the display portion of the cover member adjacent the point of connection with the easel, lying inside of the back member of the easel.

3. A display carton, comprising a body portion having an open top, a cover having one end thereof hingedly secured to the body adjacent an end of the open top, an easel member having side members and an end member which joins the side members, the said cover member extending between the side members of the easel and Within the end member of the easel, said cover being hingedly connected with the easel adjacent an edge of the end member of the easel.

4. A display carton, having a body portion, a cover therefor, a display card independent of said cover and hingedly secured to the carton at one edge of the open top, a tab member connected with the said display card is hinged to the carton, the body of the carton adjacent the display card being provided with an opening adapted to receive the said tab and within which opening the tab is adjustable thereby to hold the display card in adjusted position.

5'. A display carton, comprising a body portion having an open top, a cover therefor, a display card independent of said cover and hingedly secured to said body portion, adjacent an edge of the open top, a tab member formed as a part of said display card, the body of thecarton being provided with a slot adapted to receive said tab and within which opening the tab is adjustable, thereby to support the card in desired position.
