The forward section of the member 7 is'attached at its free endto "an annular disc or plate12 which is carried upon laterally disposed upper endportion of a supportingbar 13. This supporting bar 13 carriesa sliding collar 14 adapted'to be moved along the length thereof to any desired position and an extending "screw or 'locking'member l5 isadapted to lock said collar in adjusted position on the bar{'13, The extending body portion or shank of the locking member 15 is provided with eye letted lugs or collars 16 to which are-connected the ends of spiral retractile' springs 1T, theopposite ends of which are connect; ed to the turned back end portions-2 of the spring band member 1.. Below the collar 14 there is mounted on the bar 13 'ajcollar 18,, adapted to slide thereon and ice-locked in any position of adjustment by thumb nut 19. Extending laterally from said collar 18 and integral therewith is an arm 20 on the end of which is carried an annular disc or plate 21, similar to the disc or plate 12 on the upper end of the bar 13; The bar 13 the collar discs 12 and 21 may be made of metal or any other suitable material of sufficient strength while the cross members 6 and 7 may be made of spring steel or any other suitable material of sufficient resiliency and strength for the purpose intended.
It will be seen from the foregoing description of my device that the cross pieces 6 and 7 being slidab'ly mounted upon the vertical standards 4: are capable of common adjustment to any height from the spring member 1 and that thereby the spring member 1 may be placed in any position in reference to the height of a head by this adjustment. By the adjustment of the tension of the springs 17 and because the member 1 is of resilient material my device will obviously be adjustable to heads of any circumferential size. Also in order to adjustthe device to heads of varying depth, considered from the front to back, it will be evident that the provision of a slidable adjustable front portion of the transverse member 7 together with its onnection to the supporting bar .13 accom plishes this while at the same time affording a proper holding of the device upon the head by the- discs 12 and 21 which are adapt ed tobe so adjusted as to be positioned one upon the forehead and the otherupon the chin of a person to whom my device is applied.
It will be further seen that when the device is applied as shown in Fig. 1 and the spring band 1 partially encircles the head of the wearer the gripping stays 3 will be imbedded in the hair and retain and hold sections 'of the hair between the respective members of the series in'snch a manner that when the hair cutting or curling operation is taking place the hair will be firmly held thereby in the required position and the cut- I ting can be accomplished in such alignment as the operator wishes. It is also apparent that any degree of adjustment for tightness of the band around the head maybe affected by the tighteningof the springs 17 and that any adjustment of the device of front to back may be accomplished by the further adjusting of the transverse bar 7 upon its locking nut 10. v
The gripping stays l are formed by angularly bending preferably round wire in the formation shown in Fig. 3 and inserting their ends into apertures in the spring band 1 where these ends are securely fastened by means of staggering or by any other suitable method.
It will be observed in Fig. l I have applied a portion of my device to the head of a wearer without the use of other means of adjusting the same thereto than a binding strap or resilient cnd piece. This modified form of my device is usable at a time when the line at which the hair is to be cut is of a height which will permit its application to the head so that the tension of the spring band with the tightening or resilient member 23 attached thereto will hold the band 22 securely in position. modified form is in the position shown in Fig. l it is applicable for 'use in the cutting of the back and sides of the hair; but when it is desired to cut the frontal part ofthe hair in the form of a bang the spring band 22 and the resilient band 23 are somewhat loosened or spread apart and the whole is placed upon the head so that the band. 23 will be positioned at the back of the head while the band 22 will be in the front of the head, thus allowing the gripping stays l (arranged on the inner face of the band 22 similar to that shown on the band 1 in When this Fig. 2), to hold the hair in front for the cutting operation. The band may be of material and construction similar to the band 1 in Fig. 2, while the closing resilient band 23 may be of rubber or any other suit-v able material having sufficient elasticity to the right height in relation to the spring band 1 and as the result of this the disc 12 will properly press upon the forehead while I the disc 21 may be then adjusted to properly press against the chin, which combined adjustment results in a firm holding of the parts upon the head and a firm gripping of the head and hair by the spring band 1 and the teethor gripping stays 3, so that the hair is firmly held during the cutting operation to insure a correctly out line.
The device is of equal facility in the op eration of curling hair in that when adjusted it holds the body of the hair which .is
not intended to be curled securely placed so that the free end of the hair extendin from beneath the control of the spring ban 1 may be properly manipulated by the operator to produce the desired effect.
Although I have described my device in detail and shown a specific embodiment of one form thereof, I do not wish to be limited thereby. for it is obvious that modifications and changes may be made in the construction. combination, organization and arrangement of thepa-rts thereof without departing from the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a resilient grippin member, oppositely diametrically disposed; transverse bridging members adjustably carried thereon, vertically adjustable supporting means carried by one of said bridging members and adapted for facial contact, adjusting spring members co-operating with said resilient gripping member. and said supporting means, and a series of hair retaming stays on the inner face of said resilient gripping member adapted to hold the hair of a wearer against displacement during the operation of cutting.

the combination of a resilient gripping member, standards vertically v mounted thereon, transverse members mounted on said standards and bridging said resilient gripping member-,a supporting bar carried by one end of one of said transverse mom bers, contact discs mounted on said support-j ing bar, means adapted to adjustably position one of said discs along'the length- 0f said, supportmgbar, a member slidably mounted on said supporting bar and angularly extending therefrom springmembers engaging said angularly extending member member adapted to hold said gripping memberin operative position, and a series of spaced angularly disposed gripping stays; carried upon the innerface of said resilient gripping member adapted to hold;the hair 7 of a wearer against displacement during the operation of cutting. r In testimony whereof I aflix my si ature-Q PHILIP A.
