i application ined Juneao, 1922. semaine. 569,684.
To all whomz't may concern Be it known that I,l SHELDON M. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county o-f Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means to Withdraw Surface Water from Bathing Beaches and Resorts, of which the following, when Among the objects of the invention is to maintain the surface water at a bathing beach or resort whereno observable currentl or flow exists, clean and wholesome, so that infection of any kind` will notoccur.` An additional object of the invention is to obf tain means by which the surface water may be maintained in a cleanly condition without producing currents ofwater which are dangerous to persons bathing or disporting, therein; and further to obtain means to maintain the surface Water clean in a manner which will obviate injury to persons in the water by ycoming -in contact with any part of the mechanism of the inallation made. Additional objects are to obtain means by which the surface waterv over a large area will be maintained in la cleanly condition, and without special care; which is economically constructed and installed, and not liable to get out of order or break down.
In the drawing referred to Fig. l is va vertical section of a bathing beach, showing an installation of the means embodying this invention for maintaining the vsurface water thereon in a cleanly'condition, with the surface of said water indicated by broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of said installation, showing a section of the yshore line and beach, the water and beach thereunder not being illustrated. n
And Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a well positioned on the. shore of the bathing beach, above and below the water line.
beach, showing mechanism installed therein, lon `an enlarged'scale. v v
A reference Vcharacter applied to .designate agiven part 'indicates said part throughout the several figures of the 'drawing, wherever vthe same appears.
represents the ground of thebathinlg indicates the usual ornormal water level on the beach. C, (Fig. l), represents a sewerand-C thegnormal leveloffwater in said sewer. D representsl a. well through -which access is hadto sewer C, and al the cover to the sewer well D. `E represents a well which is positioned adjacent to the shore line of the beach, and F represents piping which extends from near the bottom of well F to underneath the bottomof the bathing beach, said piping being embedded inthe ground forming the bottom thereof. G,"
y, g', y extends from piping F and is in communi# cation therewith,"said piping G, g, g, g.,*
being also embedded in the ground under-- neath the-Water on the beach.- i II,'II, reprei sent stand pipes vwhich communicate, at the lower ends therof, vwithvthe several branch pipes G,fg,"g, gf', andwhich extend above the'normal surface of the water on the represent branch pipingv which i beach, (indicated as recited, by broken' line B), tob'e exposed to view; and 7L, it, represent dome like covers on the upper ends of stand pipes H, IfI,^resp`ectively;` I,
I,indicate apertures in stand pipes and covers 7L, 7a. It will-.be `observed that the apertures I, I, in'thcA stand pipes H, H, extend a short distance down said stand pipes from the upper ends thereof, so that'` only water near f the surface ofthe water on the beach can ow into said stand pipes',`
said apertures determining the ,depth to which waterwill be takenv from the beach.
The extension of the stand pipes H', H`,. abovethe normal level of the water on the beach, and providing apertures in Said stand pipes and in the covers thereof, serves the double function of apprising persons in the i .y
water; of the location of said stand pipes, m5
ing with stand pipe J, and with the sewer:
below the normal level of the water in said sewer. y,The pipe' F,hereinbefore described,
communicates With stand pipe J, when the gate L is open, and is shut oit from said communication when said gate is closed. Z represents a rod b v means of which the position of gate L is controllet. M represents an air cocli which is positioned on the upper end ot stand pipe J, and fm a removable bottom on the lower end of said stand pipe.
N, Fig. 3, represents a pump, which is preferably7 a centritug'al pump, and is so illustrated, in stand pipe d. represents a bevel gear, Whichv is rigidlT mounted on the rod or shaft fn of pump N, near Jthe upper end thereof. l) represents an electric motor, mounted on shelf Q, and y a. bevel gear on the shaft of motor lD which intermeshes With bevel gear C on the pump shaft n.
ln cases Where a sewer is embedded or positioned at a sumcient depth in the ground, as in Fig'. l, to receive and dispose oit Water tiovving from pipe l, a pump in pipe J is notfrequired, as Water flowing into said stand pipe d from pipe F Will rise in said stand pipe, and by opening the aip coclr M, to permit air in said stand pipe to be forced therefrom, and thereafter closing said air cocl, a Siphon 1Ilonv of Water up the stand pipe and through the pipe K to sewer C will be obtained; it being understood that the end of said pige l v-f'hich discharges into said sever is below he level of the Water li Wing through the seiver, as is illustrated in l. lWhere the sev'cr into which pipe l' discharges is not positioned below the apertures l, instand pipes H, H, and the above recited siphon flow can not be obtained, the pump b is operated, by motor P, or by other suitable means, and the Water discharged into stand pipe J is forced upward therein and discharged therefromA into pipe K, and trom thence to a sewer.
rThe several branch pipes G, g, g, g, are oi dierent diameters, being); designed to convey the quantity ot Water Which it is desired to have iioiv therethrough to pipe F, so that cach of the several stand pipes H, H, will at all times discharge a substantially uniform quantity ot Water into the bizanch pipe with which it communi- Cates, and pipe F is of a -diameterrelative to the diameter of branch pipes G, Gr, to receive and convey to the stand pipe J all the Water discharged thereinto from the pipes G, G.
All the several pipes are of suhcient diameter to obtain the required 'flow of Water through the apertures l, I, to eiiect the removal or" infected water from the beach and to maintain the water on the beach clean and wholesome, and render the beach Asate for bathing purposes by a large number ot persons.
' X indicates a 'lood gate, to prevent How 0i Water trom the server into pipe l.
l claim;
l. A bathingl beach installation compris irrey stand pipes provided with apertures adjacent to the upper ends thereof,A pipes embedded in the bottom of the beach and communicat'ing` with said stand pipes, an additional stand pipe With which and near the lower end thereof said embedded pipes communicate, a `gate arranged to control the flow ot Water into said last named stand pipe, and means to create an upward 'Hou` of Water i-n said last named stand pipe andV the discharge ot Water therefrom at the upper end thereof, all combined as set forth. 2. A bathing beach installation compris ingstand pipes provided with apertures adjacent to the upper ends thereof, said stand pipes extending above the normal level of water on the beach, and dome shaped covers resgectively provided with apertures mounted on said stand pipesI pipes embedded in thebottom of the beach and con'nnunicating with said stand pipes, an additional stand pipe positioned on the beach, with which, and Vnear the lower end thereof, said embedded pipes communicate, a `gate arranged to control the flow of Water into said last named stand pipe, a pump, and means to actuate said pump, to force an upward flow oi- Water in said last named stand pipe and the discharge of said Water from the upper end orn said stand pipe, all combined asy set forth.
