.To all whom it may concern:
The principal object of the invention is to.
provide a simple form of structure which can be readily connected to a straight service pipe, there being means combined with the cushion for deflecting the current of water out of a straight line as it passes through the cushion, thus to render more ellective the cushioning action of the air contained within the structure.
A further object is to provide means whereby any sediment collecting in the bottom of the structure can be readily drawn therefrom.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical section through the structure, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, 1 designates the hollow base of the device, said basebeing preferably formed with a concavo-convex bottom and having a large top opening 2, the wall of which is screw threaded while oppositely disposed pipe receiving 0 'enings 3 are formed within the Wall 0 the base. A drain cock 4 extends. downwardly from the center of the base 1 and is overhung by an inclined deflector 5 which extends throughout the width of the base and-divides it into a receiving compartment 6 and an outlet compartment 7. while the other opening 3 communicates with the compartment 7. Both of the compartments are located directly under the opening 2.
-The main casing of the structure consists of a pipe 8 the lower end of. which is screwed into the opening 2 and held fixed relative thereto, although it is to be understood that this pipe may be secured to the base 1 in any other suitable manner. The top of the pipe 8 is closed by means of a dome-shaped cap 9 which is screwed or otherwise secured. thereon.
It will be apparent that the hydraulic cushion such as has been described, can be connected to a straight line of service pipe by inserting the base 1 between two sections of the pipe, as shown in the drawing, one section 10, being secured within one of the openings 3 while the other section, 11, is secured Within the other opening 3. The
cushion is'to be so located that water will enter the same in the directionindicated by the arrow in the drawing. The current of Water will move against the upper inclined face of the deflector 5 and the force of the current will thus be directed upwardly into the pipe 8 so that the body of water contained within said pipe 8 will be pressed positively against the air trapped above the level of said body of water and below the cap 9. An eddy will be produced over the upper edge of the deflector 5 and any sediment carried by the water will be deposited in the dead body of water located between the bottom of the base 1 and the lower face of the deflector 5. The sediment thus collected upon the bottom of the base can be readily drawn ofi, whenever desired, through the drain cock 4.
Attention is directed to the simplicity of the structure constituting the present invention, it being made up of the base which is formed in a single castin including the deflector 5, the dome-shape cap, and the pipe 8.
The device is especially designed for use in connection with straight service pipes although it is to be understood that the same can be used wherever possible.
