To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX M. S PPns, a
'citizen of the United States, and resident of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Drinking-Fountain, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of drinking fountains adapted for use in supplying drinking water in public places and in manufacturing establishments, and more particularly relates to such apparatus with which a drinking cup or vessel is unnecessary.
One object of my invention is to provide a sanitary drinking fountain having novel means whereby a stream of water is caused to flow in regulated quantities from a source of supply in such manner as prevents the nozzle being touched with the hands or mouth in drinking and in this way avoid and prevent the nozzle from in any way becoming contaminated by such contact.
Another object of my invention is to provide a drinking fountain of novelconstruction having improved means whereby a supply of drinking water is caused to flow at intervals as required, and the clothing and feet of the persons using the fountain are protected from splashing while the fountain is being used.
A further object of my invention is to provide a selfdraining drinking fountain inning novel means whereby the flow of water regulated and controlled and the fountain is drained after being used.
Still further objects of my invention will be disclosed hereinafter as the invention is more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 2 designates a hollow post or pedestal hav ng a top finial or cap 3 secured on and closing the upper end thereof. The pedestal :2 is rigidly secured by its base along one side of the drainage basin 1 for the waste water, the catch basin being hollowed out or dished on its uppermost face and being connected at the lowermost point in the basin by a drainage pipe 5 with the sewer 6 which leads to a point of disposal of the waste water.
l/Vithin the hollow pedestal 2 is a. water supply pipe 7 having an open upper-end'8, which is bent at an angle to the vertically extending portion of the pipe 7 so as to form a nozzle through which the water supply emerges. The nozzle 8 is arranged 'to eject a stream of water through an elongated orifice 9 which extend; through the side wall of the pedestal 2 at a convenient point in the height thereof.
The water supply pipe 8 is provided with a self-draining valve 10 having connected therewith a treadle 11 by which the valve is actuated in opening. The helical spring 12 on the lower end of the rod 13 which serves to connect the treadle 11 with the valve 10 is provided to actuate the rod 13 in one direction and return the valve 10 to its closed position.
The valve 10 is positioned within a Valve pit 14 which is located below the catch basin 4, and the pit ll has a connection 15 leading to the sewer 6. The valve 10 is provided with a drain outlet 16 arranged to drain the valve and pipe connected thereto after each time the valve is opened by means of the treadle 11, and the pipe 7 is connected through the valve 10 with a source of water supply under a head or under pressure.
On one side of the catch basin 4 and in front of the pedestal 2 is a shield 17 positioned so as to form a cover for the valve pit 14. The shield is closed on three sides, with the open side facing. away from the catch basin, and the valve operating rod 13 extends through an opening in the bottom of the shield 17 so that the treadle 11 is located within the shield 17 in convenient position to be trod upon by a, person deairing to obtain a supply of water from the fountain.

The treadle 11 is then pressed downwardly by the foot of the person obtaining the water so as to open the valve 10 and a stream of water is ejected or caused to flow from the nozzle 8 through the orifice 9 in the vertical post of the pedestal 2 which forms the cover or surrounding shield for the nozzle 8. By then placing his mouth over the stream of water issuing from the nozzle 8 through the. orifice 9 the desired amount of water is obtained and the water continues to flow as long as the valve 10 is heldopen. The surplus-water is discharged into thecatch basin & and flows through the pipe 5 into the sewer 6. After a person obtaining water has slaked his thirstthe spring 12 is released and the valve 10 closed thereby so as to shut off the supply of water to the nozzle 8 by removing his foot from the treadle 11, and the spring acts to hold the valve 10 in closed position until again opened by treading upon the button 11 forming thetreadle.
The valve 10 is constructed and arranged to be selfdraining so that the pipe 7 between the valve 10 and nozzle 8 in the pedestal 2 is always drained after being'used and liability of freezing in extremely cold weather is thereby' avoided and overcome.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. By the location of the water nozzlewithin a hollow pedestal at a distance from the opening for the water in the side of the pedestal which formsa shield for the nozzle. the possibility of contamination of the nozzle and water is suing therefrom by contact with the lips or hands of persons obtaining water at the fountain prevented and made impossible or extremely improlnible. The construction and. location of the shield along one side of the catch basin at the base of the pedestal prevents the clothing of the persons using the fountain from becoming wet. The employment of an automatically draining valve provides a convenient means for emptying the pipe leading from the valve to the nozzle of the fountain after each water sirpplyii'ig operation of thefountain, while the provision of the valve operating means within the shield enables the foun tain to be readily operated by treading thereon with one foot of the operator.
Modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from my invention as defined in the broader claims.
I claim 1. A drinking fountain comprising in combination a hollow lengthwise vertical.
pedestal having an orifice in the side wall thereof and a water supply pipe within the pedestal having a discharge nozzle thereon, said nozzle being positioned within the pedestal opposite the orifice to project a stream of water upwardly through the orifice in said pedestal.
2. A drinking fountain comprising in combination a hollow lengthwise vertical pedestal having an orifice in the side wall thereof, a water supply pipe within the pedestal having a discharge nozzle thereon,
. said nozzle being positioned within the pedestal opposite the orifice to project a stream of water upwardly through the orifice in said pedestal, and controlling means to shut off the water supply to the nozzle.
3. A drinking fountain comprising in combination a hollow lengthwise vertical pedestal having an orifice in the side wall thereof, a water supply pipe within the pedestal having a discharge nozzle thereon, said nozzle being positioned within the pedestal opposite the orifice to project a stream of water upwardly through the orifice in said pedestal, and a vertically extending shield alongside said pedestal at the bottom thereof for protecting the lower extremities of persons using the fountain.

A drinking fountain comprising in combination a hollow pedestal having an orifice in its side at an intermediate point in the height thereof, a water supply pipe having a nozzle within said pedestal, said nozzle being arranged to discharge water through said orifice, a shield-alongside the fountain for protecting the feet of persons using the fountain while the fountain is in operation, and means within said shield whereby the flow of water from the nozzle is regulated and controlled.
5. A. drinking fountain comprising in combination a hollow pedestal having a side opening at an intermediate point in the height thereof, a water supply pipe having nozzle within said pedestal arranged to discharge Water through said side opening, a valve to control the flow of water to the nozzle, a shield alongside the fountain to protect the feet of persons using the fountain, and valve operating means within the shield wherebv said valve is opened.
