GEAR. PULLEB. I
' I Application filed April 20, 192% Serial No. 555,760.
To-azz whom/2'1?mayaconcemfl Be it known that I, GEORGE L; HUNT, a citizen of the UnitedvSta'tes, and resident of Boscobel, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new-and useful Improvement in Gear Pullers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification. My invention relates to atool which may be employed in drawing gears" or other wheels from their shafts or axles.
Among its objects, my invention contemplatesthe provision of a gear-puller of sturdy construction, that comprises a relatively small number of parts, which m'ay'be readily operated by one man and which may 'be economically manufactured.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a gear puller which may be employed in removing gears of various sizes and which comprises gear-engaging; elements or jaws which, when the tool-is operated, tend to approach each other and thus to clamp the gear which is being removed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating the gear puller of my invention as it appears when used for pulling a gear from its associated shaft;
Figure 2 is an elevational view taken at right angles to the plane of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a top plan view of the devices shown in Figures '1 and 2; and
Figure 4c is an elevational view of one of a pair of gear-engaging elements, or jaws, which may be substituted for the correspondingjaws shown in the preceding figures.
Similar characters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, reference numeral 10 indicates a jack-screw which is provided at its lower end with a centering point 11 and at its upper end with a square head 12 to facilitate the application of a wrench or other tool wherewith the screw may be rotated. Screw 10 extends through and has threaded engagement with a block or hub 13 which is formed integral with arms 14.14 which project in opposite directions from the block in lines at right angles to the axis of screw 10.
Carried by the arms 14eat the outer ends thereof are the jaw shackles 1515, each of these jaw shackles being formed from a single piece" of metal and comprising the substantially triangular spaced-apart sides l515 connected by web 15 A rivet 16 pivots the apices of the triangular sides of each" jaw shackle to one of the arms 14.
The gear-engaging j awsareillustrated at I 17'17, each of these j aws'having the upper end thereof embraced by one of the jaw shackles 15. Each jaw is pivoted in its associated shackle 15 by a bolt 18. It will be noted that the jaws 17 are provided with wide faced hook portions 17 In some cases,
it is desirable to employ awshaving narrow faced hook portions. Such ajm'odified jaw construction is illustrated in Fi'guret. I
have illustrated bolts 1818 as means for pivoting paws 17 in their associated shackles, this arrangement permitting thejaws 17 to be interchanged with jaws of the type illustrated in Figure 4:." Of course, 'bolts 18-48 may be replaced by suitable" rivets, if desired.
At A I have illustrated a gear that is to be withdrawn from its shaft B. In order to remove the gear, the hook portions 1'7 of the aws are caused to engage behind, or under, the gear A and j ack-sorew 10 is screwed down so that its centering point 11' engages the adjacent end of shaft B. Continued turning down of the jack-screw moves the block or hub 13 upwardly or away from shaft B. As the hub or block 13 moves up wardly, the shackles 15 are permitted to move relative to arms 14 around the axes" of rivets 16, and to move relative totheir associated jaws 17 until the shackle portions 15 are drawn into snug engagement with the outer edges of the upper portions of the jaws. By virtue of this construction, the thrust imparted to block or hub13 is re-- solved into two components, namely, one which tends to draw the gear Aofi of its, shaft B and the other which tends to cause thehooked ends of the gage the gear A.
Having thus illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A gear puller comprising a j ack-screw, a block through which said jack-screw extends and with which it has threaded engagement, said block being provided with jaws tightly to env fixed arms for movement relative to the lat ter in a plane co-incident with the axis of the jack-screw, and a pair of jaws dependi'ng from said shackles, the upper end of each of said jaws being embraced within one of said shackles and being pivoted to its associated shackle, near the upper portion of the shackle, for limited movement relative to the shackle in a plane co-incident with the axisof the jack-screw.
2. A gear puller comprising a block, a jack-screw extending through, and having threaded engagement with theblock and being provided at its upper end with means to facilitate its rotation, a pair of jaw shackles pivoted to the block onopposite sides. of the latter, said shackles adapted'to move relative to the block in a plane parallel; to
the axis of the jack-screw, a pair of gear engaging jaws, each jaw beingppivoted to one of said shackles ata point above the point wheresuch shackleiispivoted'to the block, and means carried by each shackle for limiting the movement between the shac j klc and its associated jaw. V 3. A, gear puller compr sing a JitCkSClBW, a block through which the ack-screw extendsand with which it has rthreaded engagement, a pair of oppositelydisp bsed jaw shackles, each pivoted tothe block for movement relatively to thelatter in a plane i'nei dent with the of the jack-screw, each of salid shackles being substantially U- shaped in horizontal crass-section and having' its parallel legs extending toward the block and ,pivoted thereto as aforesaid, together with a pair of jaws depending from said jaw shackles, the upper end of each of said jawsbeing held within the embrace of one of said shackles.
