Description
Nov. 16, 1926.
A. F. MARCIANO ET AL GE'AR AND WHEEL FULLER Filed Dec. 15, 1923 Patented Nov. 16, 1926.
ANTONIO F. MARCIANO, F SOMERVILLE, AND HURAN'I MASSACHUSETTS; SAID SERON ASSIG-NOR TO H. SERON, OF CAMBRIDGE, SAID lvIARCIANO.
GEAR AND V] HEEL FULLER.
Application filed December 15, 1923.
This invention relates to gear, wheel and bearing pullers and its object is to provide a puller of simple construction that shall be rigidly adjustable in any desired position.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 1s a top plan View of the device with one of the jaws removed; Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line 22 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 Fig. 1; Fig. l is a sectional View on line 4-t Fig. 1; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the jaws.
The hub 1 is interiorly threaded for engagement by the square headed screw 2 and is furnished with the equally spaced radial arms 3; each radial arm being furnished with the vertical, cross-sectionally Ishaped slot 4 extending outwardly beneath the raised outer end 5 of the arm and forming in the arm two oppositely, horizontally disposed rails or guides 6.
Each of the jaws 7 has its upper end 7 vertically, cross-sectionally I-shaped to slid-- ingly engage therails 6 of the arm 3; said upper end 7 being extended rearwardly and vertically apertured at 8 for engagement by the bolt 9 which extends through the aperture S and slot at and below the under itace 01? the arm 3 for engagement by the nut 10 which, when screwed upon the bolt 9, engages the under face of the arm, thereby securing the jaw in the desired position.
The jaws 7 have their lower ends 7 turned inwardly to engage the rim of the wheel 11 mounted on the axle or shaft 12.
The operation is simple and obvious: The operator loosens the nuts 10, slides the jaws 7 to such positions in the slots l, that the lower ends 7 of thejaws engage the rim of the wheel 11, and the lower end of the screw 2 engages the upper end of the axle Serial No. 680,834.
or shaft 12; he then tightens the nuts 10 and operates the screw 2, thereby forcing the wheel from its axle or shaft or vice Versa.
The arms and jaws may be of such size and shape as may be desired to enable the jaws to reach the object to be operated on, it being simply necessary that they should be in sliding contact, one with the other, 5 substantially as shown and described, and that there should be means for holding them firmly together in any desired position; said means being adapted to clamp the upper end of the jaws directly to the upper face of the arms, as illustrated in the drawings.
Obviously the puller is adapted for work for which pullers are employed, such as removing automobile and truck wheels, cams, collars, sprockets, etc, from their shafts or axles, etc., and bending pipes and straightening shafting, etc; there being employed for these purposes such modified forms of arms and jaws and such extensions thereof or adjuncts thereto as may be needed.
We claim- A wheel and gear puller of the character described comprising, in combination, a hub; a screw in axial engagement therewith; a plurality of radial arms projected from the hub, eachradial arm being furnished with a vertical, cross-sectionally I-shaped slot extending outwardly beneath the raised outer end of the arm and forming in the arm two oppositely disposed horizontal rails; a plurality of jaws, each jaw having itsupper end vertically, cross-sectionally I-shaped for sliding engagement with said rails, and laterally extended and vertically apertured; a bolt extending through the top of the jaw and slot; and a nut for engaging the bolt and holding the jaw firmly in place.
