GARTER.
Application filefl January 9, 1922. Serial No. 528,1265
To all whom it may concern:
Be I it, known that I, SEBASTIEN LACA- VALERIE, citizen of France, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garters, having more particular reference to garters adapted for use in supporting mens socks.
The inventionhas for an object to provide a novelandinexpensive form of garter presenting no projecting parts and capable of quick attachment to and removal from the sock. I
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the. objects and advantages band in a well known manner.
.Inthe use of my improved garter the thereof, reference will be had to the follow- "ing description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claimsin which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings. is a perspective view of a garter constructed according to my invention, showing the same in extended position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified form of garter.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastening clip of a further modified form of garter.
Fig. 1 is a detail side view showing the type of garter illustrated in Fig. 1 as in actual use.
Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4: but showing the application of type of garter illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a detail face view showing a clip with a modified arrangement of the sock gripping element.
As here embodied my improved clip comprises briefly, a clip adapted to engage the sock, a strap or band attached to the clip,
and a hook attached to the band and adapted to engage the clip to hold the garter in lace. 1
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the clip comprises a thin fiat disk 10 which may be made of metal, or rigid nonmetallic material such as celluloid, and which is formed with a circular hole or aperture 11 in the centre thereof.
Leading inward toward this hole from one side of the disk 10 is a tapered notch 12 the walls of which are at an acute angle to one another, the inner end of this notch communicating with-,the hole 11 by, means:-
of a short and very-narrow slit 13.;v
The band is indicated at 15-and a narrow integral hook.18 projects,,the
plate being slotted as at19 for attachmentv of the band 15. The ends of the band-may] be turned back upon the main body thereof may-beof ordinary elastic webbing such as ,isin! common use von garters, being attached to the; disk 10 by passing the end thereof through. a slot 16' cut in thedisle. a i
The opposite end of the band carriesjthe. hook which is here shown as comprising-fa. plate or body 17 from one side of which.
and secured to the latterby stitchingor an-v other suitable means, orI may arrange one end for expansion and contraction, of the] v clip 10 is placed onthe-top. edge wof'lthe. sock, whch enters through'the notch 12Ta-ndf b g'gripped in thes id Slit 13 T and prevented from withdrawal. T heband 15 is then placed around the 'limb'of the passage leading into the aperture 11 are sprung in opposite directions transversely to the body of the clip until the walls of slit 13 are separated a sufficient distance from each other for removal of the sock.
In the embodiment of the invention'shown in Fig. 2 I utilize the clip 10 but instead of the flat elastic webbing 15 I provide an endless elastic band 20 of circular cross section which is attached to the clip by looping it through the aperture 11. The hook employed in this modification comprises an elongated plate 21 having at one end a rearwardly pointing tongue 22 which is curved soas to incline toward the plate 21 near its tip and leave a space at its root in which the band is looped. The operative length of the band may be varied by looping it one or more times around the tongue 22.
is provided with a rectangular opening 28 into a lower corner of which a diagonal slot 29 leads. This slot 29 permits of ready engagement of the end of the band 30 with the plate 25 after the band has been placed around the limb of the user. The top of the sock or stocking is inserted in the lower end of slot 26 and gripped by the bar 27.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a clip 10 having a'central hole 11 and a tapering notch 12, this notch terminating in a slit 13 which is preferably curved as shown. The walls of this slit may be serrated or roughened to more securely grip the soclg which is engaged throughout the full length of the slit 13 this extended engagement ensuring a firm hold of the clip on the sock and obviating any chance of the sock becoming disengaged.
It is to be understood that various other changes and modifications might'be made in my improved garter without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A garter Comprising a clip formed of a thin plate Provided with an aperture and having a slit leading into said aperture from one side of the plate, a band attached to said clip, and a hook attached to said band, said hook being adapted to engage in the said aperture to hold the garter in position.
2. A garter comprising a clip formed of a thin plate formed with an aperture and having a slit leading into said aperture from one side of the plate, a band engaged in said aperture, and a hook attached to said band and adapted to be engaged in said aperture to hold the garter in place.
3. A garter comprising a clip formed of a thin plate formed with an aperture and having a slit leading into said aperture from one side of the plate, a band engaged in said aperture, and a hook attached to said band and adapted to be engaged in said aperture to hold the garter in place, the outer portion of said slit being in the form of a tapering notch.
4. A garter comprising a clip formed of a thin plate formed with an aperture and having a slit leading itno said aperture from one side of the plate, a band engaged in said aperture, and a hook attached to said band and adapted to be engaged in said aperture to hold the garter in place, the outer portion of said slit being in the form of a tapering notch, the inner portion of said slit be ing longitudinally curved.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
SEBASTIEN LACAVALERIE.
