To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, Sir ARTHUR TREVOR DAwsoN, bart., and Sir GEORGE THoMAs BUOKHAM, kni i t, both subjects of the King of Great ritain, residing at Vickers House, Broadway, Westminster, in the county of London, England, and GEORGE Dorson HAsKELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to- Machine Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machine guns of the gas operated type wherein the bolt head has pivoted thereto a locking block the rear end of which when the bolt head occupies the firing position against the breech faceof the barrel, bears against a shoulder or stop on the mechanism casing, the rocking movement of the said block to this osition after the breech has been close and its rocking movement from this position prior to the opening of the breech being effected by the relative displacement that occurs between this block and the striker post or carrier connected to the gas operated piston. In the construction heretofore adopted the aforesaid rocking movements of the locking block have been efiected by means of cam or inclined surfaces on this block with which projections on the striker post co-operate. It is found in practice that these surfaces, which are arranged at each side of a longitudinal recess in the locking block, are difiicult to make in the accurate manner necessary for the proper working of the mechanism and the chief object of the present invention is to devise an arrangement in which the cam surfaces can be machined more quickly and accurately and at the same time in a less expensive manner. I
According to thepresent invention the cam or inclined surfaces, instead of bein formed on the locking block as aforesai are formed on the striker post which is suitably prolonged in a rearward direction and the projections co-operating with these 59 cam surfaces are provided on the locking block. The said surfaces are preferably arranged at each side of the striker post and the co-operating projections are carried by tWo lugs projecting downwardly from and in this case the co-operating projections may be replaced by a pin which is carried by the aforesaid'lugs and passes through the slot. In this construction also the cam surfaces can be more readily machined than in the construction heretofore employed.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fullywith reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section shewing one constructional form of our improvements.
Figure 2 is a local section taken approximately on the line. 22 of Figure 2, and
Figures 3 and 4 are views similar to Figures 1 and 2 (Figure 4 being a section on the line 4= 4 of Figure 3) shewing the alternative form of our improvements.
A represents the mechanism casing of the gun, B the bolt head, C the locking block and D the striker post.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, D, D are the cam or inclined surfaces on the striker post D,.these surfaces forming part of the upper and lower walls of recessesin the sides of the striker post, and C, C are the projections on the locking block which projections engage with the said cam surfaces and are carried by lugs C C projecting .downwardly from the locking block C at .said slot need not extend to the rear face of the striker post as the pin C can be assemg bled througha hole a (see Figure 4) in the side wall of the .m gchanism casing which *post andthe v hole is preferably situated in a position outside the cycle of natural movement of the the bolt head B reaches the breech face of the barrel, the final part of this relative displacement being for the purpose of bringing the striker.D into contact with the cartridge in the barrel; the rocking movement of the locking block to the unlocking position. takes place during-the final part of the relative displacement that occurs between the striker post and the looking block during the rearward movement of the striker post after a shot has been fired. The locking block is moved to and fro by the engagement of shoulders C C at the ends of the recesses in the striker post, with the aforesaid projections C, C (or the aforesaid pin G on the locking block. During this to and fro movement of the locking block its rear part rides in contact with the under side of the mechanism casing cover as is indicated by chain lines in Figures 1 and 3.
Vhat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a machine gun of the kind referred to, the combination with the bolt, the strikerpost, and a movable locking block adapted to co-operate with a fixed part of the gun to hold the bolt in the forward position, said locking block having a longitudinal recess between the side walls of which part of said striker-post is disposed, of a rearward extension of said striker-post, said extension being formed with a slot which. passes through it from side to side and which has cam or inclined surfaces on its upper and lower walls, and a pin carried by the side walls of said locking block, this pin passing through said slot and engaging with the cam or inclined surfaces thereof.
2. In a machine gun of the kind referred to, the combination with the bolt, the strikerpost, and a movable locking block adapted to co-operate with a fixed part of the gun to hold the bolt in the forward position, said locking block having a longitudinal recess between the side walls of which part of said striker-post is disposed, of a rearward extension of said striker-post, said extension being formed with a slot which passes through it from side to side and which has cam 01' inclined surfaces on its upper and lower walls, downwardly projecting lugs at the rear part of said locking block and a pin carried by said lugs, this pin passing through said slot and engaging with the cam or inclined surfaces thereof.
