:PIPE WRENCH.
Application led January 24,1922.V Seri'a1-,N`o.u53l1,382.l j i To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, BURTON H. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and ,State 5 of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Pipe Wrenches, of which the followngfdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representinv like parts. Y l
IrIhils invention relates to improvements in hand tools of the type in which two jaw members are adapted to engage the work, as in wrenches, pliers, pipe wrenches, etc.
For manyY uses, hand tools of this general character require a strong grip of the jaws upon the work in order that slippage may lnot take place. This result is obtain-v able, ofcourse, by providing the handle with a relatively long leverage, but this in many cases is undesirable in that the -length of the movement of the ends of the handle arms increases proportionately to the length of the arms fromthe pivot point, and as a yresult a tool of this type having long handle arms can not be readily manipulated with one hand to produce the proper pressure at the jaws. Various attempts have ybeen made to meet this condition by articulated levers and otherv constructions but the results have not been entirely satisfactory.
'One important object ofV the present invention therefore, is to provide a powerful tool of thisv general class which is Simple in construction, consists of but few parts and which exerts thel desired gripping force upon the jaws with a-comparatively short leverage thus producing a tool that is capable of ready manipulation by one hand and atthe same time permits the powerful engaging action t'o be? maintained upon the work without requiring heavy pressure applicationv for continued periods on the handle members.
`Another important object of the present invention is, to provide adjustable means for varying the closing movement imparted to the jawsy upon moving the handle members to the closed position. Y
Still another object of the invention'is to provide novel means forY imparting vpivotal ferent adjustment of-the jaws` in ldotted lines. A
Fig. `3 is a top plan view ofFig. l; and f j Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional "views taken on the-lines 4-4 and 5-5 respectively. In the draw-ings, 10 isa head whichA supports the jaw members 11 and 12. .The head may be variously constructed. but is shown Y as of a hollow construction havingjthe spaced side lates 13 and laconnectedby. the wall 15. Xtending rearwardly from the head10- is a handle member 16, the same,being-showinl as formedintegral with the "head .10, and having the hollow construction clearly illustrated in, Fig'. 5. The construction'zof-the combined head and handle membershown is suchthat it may be readily blankedout of sheet-ly metal Aand then bent to form the side plates 13 and 14 andthe hollow handle l16. The handle 16 preferably is ,bent lengthwise slightly in the formof an arcfas shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so ythat theasanlemay be more firmly grasped by the hand. 'l
The construction and shape oflthe jaw members 11 and 12 may be varied inac-l cordance with therequirements of thelield of use for theto'ol` and in the present. instance the. jawV members :are shown-aspro'- vided vwith wo-rk engaging teethl-Z` and1f8. The jaw member, 11 is .pivotal'ly -secured'to the head 10 at 19, and the jaw member-1 2 is supported irl-spaced relation to the jaw member 11,andis pivotally securedf'ov lthe head l0 at 20.`
,-Inthe. present device,- the construction; is
such that movement. ofonjej aw ,towards its closed position serves to limpart a similar movement tov the "other';jaw,f and `tof-this end the jaw member 12 is providedwithalatits Yao
erally disposed projection 21 that engages an abut-ment 21a upon the jaw member 11, and asia vresult `movement"of theljaw 1 1 towardsthe-closed position imparts a similar movement to the jaw 12.
Closing movement is imparted to the .jaw member 11 by a handle member 22, in the present instance, having its forward end disposed between the side plates 13 and'113of the head 10 and pivoted thereto at 22a. The handle member 22 preferably has acam face 23 disposed frontwardly of the pivot 22a, an'dlthe jaw y"member 11 has a rearwardly extending arm` 24 adapted 'Ito be actuated by the 'cam face 128.' A
Tt desirable 2that means'be provided for varying/the closing movement yimparted to the jaws upn 1ii'oving the piv'o'ted 'handle member 22 to its closed positiomand to this nd`l adjustable means is interposed between liecain k'fa'ce23 land the arm 24. lThe vadjustable fineans VIirefe'rably comprises a threaded member 25 having threaded eng gementwithitheenlargeinent 26 upon the arm "24, and "the imember v25 has a head '27 adapted 'to 'be igrasped by 'the lingers and rotated lto effect adjustment. The head V27 ha'sa face that restsfupon the cam face 23, and-"as 'the pivoted zhandle member 22 is rockedfromfth'e positin'shown in ifull lines in Fig.l2 to'tlieposition indicated indotted lines, the cam lface 23 imparts a rocking movementto the jaw 11,'and the projection 2,1 andiabutinent 21L'impart a similarroc'king movement to Ethe jaw 12. The leffect uponth'e jaws produced byf'adjusting the threaded member 25 isI clearly's'hwnfin Fig. 2bythe full anddotted linepositions of these elements.y
"It ris desirable to lprovide spring means for yieldingly holding the handle member 22 and'thefjaws 11 and 12 in the' open position, and to thisy endaspring 28 isprovided vcc'i'nveniently coiled about apin 29 and having one endreacting against' a lip 30 of the handle member 22 andthe other end'reatihgngainst a nose 31`upon thelprojection 21.V y j A The pins 19,20, 221 and29 are preferably threadedfat t one end to receive nuts, las shown, for removably securing the pinsin place,'an'd asa result of this construction the hand tool may be readily assembled, 'and should any part become wornv orinjured, it 'inayibe readily removed and replaced by a 'new part.
Freni thefforegoing description vand the drawings, it'will` be apparent that the pivoted handle member v22- serves to 'exert a strong grippingforce 'upon the' jaws l11 and 12,"tlfiat' the'p'osition of the jaws may be readily adjusted to accommodate vdifferent Isize worlr,'and' that "the entire tool'is'simple inconstruction and inexpensive to manufacture. It will also be apparent that the 'extendingtherefrom,'a pair of pivoted jaws, each having a pivot pin extendingl directly through the bodypf tlie jaw `and into the lie-ad Afer pivotall'y connectingfeach jaw to the 'heacha projection Eformed integral with eac-h jaw andextendingradially from the pivotal mountingof the jaws into overlapping 'i'elatioin v' and a handle pivoted yto vthe head and having a cam surface ffor operating one ofthe j aws to gripthe work.
gaging the work, a head having'ahandle extending therefrom, a 'pair of i pivotedfjaws, each having va pivotY 'pinextending directly througli'theb'ody of the aw and -into 'the head lfor pivotally connecting .eac-h jaw to thehead, aiprojectionformed integralfwith each j awand extending sradially efrom the pivotal mounting-of "the aws into `overlapping relation, `and i a handle ipivoted to Vthe head' andhaving a cain surfacefor operating one of the jaws f to' grip the work, and a spring a'ctinglon thefother awfor opening the jaws.
In'ato'ol having opposingfj-aws forengaging the uvork, ya head formed vofsheet metal and bent to form a pair of spaced sidel plates connected by ani intermediate portion ofthe sheet metal, a 'handle rigid with the head and extending rearwardly therefrom, a pair ofjawsmounted between the side'plates 'of' the heard and pivotally secured tothe side plates,'a handle extending into the space bef tween said side plates and pivotally secured thereto, cooperating l projections upon `said -jaws rfor positively Aimparting -the pivotal movement of-one jaw toltheother; and jaw actuating means includinga cam face upon the. pivotedhandle and an extension upon one ofthe jaws andl adapted to be swung by the cam-face.
'4. 1Inwa tool having opposingjaws for enr gaging the "work, a ,head having side members and ahandle formed integrally of, a singlefpiece of metal, apa-ir of jaws, each having a Lpivot pin extending directly through the body of each jaw and intofthe side members of the head, a single: projection extending fro'm'the body of eachfjaw into `overlapping relation and formed integral with each jaw, Y a handle fpivotally mounted in the headwand having a'cainfor operatii-ig` one offthejaws, and a spri-ngfor opening thejaws. Y l,
5. In a tool having opposing jawsforengaging the work, a head having side members and a handle Jformed integrally of a single piece of metal, a pair of jaws, each having a pivot pin extending directly through the body of each jaw and into the side members of the head, a single projection extending from the rbody of each jaw into overlapping relation and formed integral with each jaw, a handle pivotally mounted in the head and having a cam for operating one of the jaws, an adjustable device mounted on the' handle operated jaw and engaging the cam, and a spring for opening the jaws.
6. In a tool having opposing jaws for engagng the work, a head having a handle extending therefrom, a pair of pivoted jaws, each having a pivot pin extending directly through the body of the jaw and into the head for pivotally connecting each jaw to the head, a projection formed integral with each jaw and extending radially from the pivotal mounting of the jaws into overlapping relation, and a handle pivoted to the head and having a cam surface for operating one of the jaws to grip the work, and a spring mounted in the head and bearing upon the radial overlapping projection of the adjacent jaw to open the jaws.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
