Be it known that I, BURTON H. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and ,State 5 of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Pipe Wrenches, of which the followngfdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representinv like parts. IrIhils invention relates to improvements in hand tools of the type in which two jaw members are adapted to engage the work, as in wrenches, pliers, pipe wrenches, etc.
For manyY uses, hand tools of this general character require a strong grip of the jaws upon the work in order that slippage may lnot take place. This result is obtain-v able, ofcourse, by providing the handle with a relatively long leverage, but this in many cases is undesirable in that the -length of the movement of the ends of the handle arms increases proportionately to the length of the arms fromthe pivot point, and as a yresult a tool of this type having long handle arms can not be readily manipulated with one hand to produce the proper pressure at the jaws. Various attempts have ybeen made to meet this condition by articulated levers and otherv constructions but the results have not been entirely satisfactory.
'One important object ofV the present invention therefore, is to provide a powerful tool of thisv general class which is Simple in construction, consists of but few parts and which exerts thel desired gripping force upon the jaws with a-comparatively short leverage thus producing a tool that is capable of ready manipulation by one hand and atthe same time permits the powerful engaging action t'o be? maintained upon the work without requiring heavy pressure applicationv for continued periods on the handle members.

Closing movement is imparted to the .jaw member 11 by a handle member 22, in the present instance, having its forward end disposed between the side plates 13 and'113of the head 10 and pivoted thereto at 22a. In a tool having opposing jawsforengaging the work, a head having side members and a handle Jformed integrally of a single piece of metal, a pair of jaws, each having a pivot pin extending directly through the body of each jaw and into the side members of the head, a single projection extending from the rbody of each jaw into overlapping relation and formed integral with each jaw, a handle pivotally mounted in the head and having a cam for operating one of the jaws, an adjustable device mounted on the' handle operated jaw and engaging the cam, and a spring for opening the jaws.
6. In a tool having opposing jaws for engagng the work, a head having a handle extending therefrom, a pair of pivoted jaws, each having a pivot pin extending directly through the body of the jaw and into the head for pivotally connecting each jaw to the head, a projection formed integral with each jaw and extending radially from the pivotal mounting of the jaws into overlapping relation, and a handle pivoted to the head and having a cam surface for operating one of the jaws to grip the work, and a spring mounted in the head and bearing upon the radial overlapping projection of the adjacent jaw to open the jaws.
