www www @me BERNARD v. APFELD, or sroxnNE, WASHINGTON.
. WRENCH;
To all/whom it may' concern: Y
Be it known that I, BERNARD V. APFELD, a citizen 'of the" United States, residing at Spokane, in Spokane .county and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in wrenches of the sliding jaw, cam closure type, well adapted for the 'unctions of a tool ofthis character and as a pipe wrench. The tool of the invention is also capable of use. as a vise, and may with facility and convenience be converted for use as a rotary, hand operated brace for boring tools, Screwdrivers, and for other purposes.
. With the above ends inl view the invention consists in certain novel combinations .andl arrangements ol-"parts involving a pair of parallel. jaws, one of whichv is movable, with means utilizing a cam or incline device for operating the movable jaw toward or away from the fixed jaw to secure .various adjustments.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustratedone complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention inA whichA the parts are rcombined and arranged according tothe-best mode I have thus far devised forthe practical application ofthe f principles of my invention. Y y
yFigure l is a view in elevation illustrating a wrench constructed according to and embodying my invention, a crank Vhandle being shown in dotted lines to indicate the use of the tool as a brace for rotary boring.
Fig. E?, is a view at the rear edge of thel tool, part `broken away. v
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the movable jaw and its-cam block or arm randl connections.
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view showing the relation of the slide sleeve to the tool shank and the locking ratchet plate between the sleeve andshank. p l
` Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a plan of i the cam block and cam shoe, the pivotal sup- I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 19, 1921.'.` Application led August 10, 1920. Serial No. 402,610. i
At the sidesof the fixed jaw, adjacent thel shank, are provided mortises for the reception of the side plates 6, 6, of a metallic frame which is secured by screws 6 and extends orprojects laterally from the jaw. .The frame of which the plates 6 form a part, is fashioned with two pairs of slots 7, 7 one pair in each plate, 'alined, and disposed perpendicular to the face of the xed jaw V3.
'Within the lateral frame, the movable or slide jaw 8 is adapted to operate, and the pairs of side lugs 9, 9, integral with the movable jaw are guided in the slots of the side plates in order that themovable jaw may remain at-all times parallel with the fixed and travel toward orawayfrom the latter with a stable movement.
The jaw 8 is moved laterally of the fixed jaw through the instrumentality of the lon-,
gitudinally movableor slidable cam block l0, which is fashioned in such formas to` project obliquely from the shank lagainst which it bears at one or its inner end, and p the block isslott'ed as yat 11 substantially t throughout its length, the slot being also in'- cline'd to the axial line of the tool or its shank.
At itsouter end the block is pro-. i
vided with lateral lugs 12 and grooves l2 to Y guideit in its movementin the frame be-.
tween the side plates 6, 6, for it will be `apparent vthat the block is slidable longitudinally of the shank with its outer or projectf x ed end incased in and guided by the plates ot the frame. A'flexible connection is providedl between the laterally movable jaw and the longitudinally movable block by f.
the fixed lug 13 on the jaw which bends downwardly, and terminates ina pivot pin 14,' and on the pin a shoe l5 is-pivoted or loosely journaled. The shoe is complementary to the vcam block, and the pin extends trans.- versely through the slot. Thus, as the block is slid along the shank, it will be apparent that through the flexible connection and the cam slot in the cam bloclnthe movable jaw will be moved toward or away from the y and slides ywit-h a neat itinthe slot 1l of fixed jaw, for clamping or releasing an object between the two jaws.
This movement of thejaw 8 is effected throughthe actuating slide sleeve 16 sur rounding the shank and slidable thereon.
The sleeve is of metal, with a rectangular interior to move smoothly along on the shank','and is fashioned with a closed, integral yoke 17 through which a screw 18 is freelypassed and disposed parallel with the shank. `Thefend of this screw, at 19 is threaded into the cam block, and a lock nutv 2O isused to clamp the screw or bolt in the block.v Nithin the yoke and on the screw is located a non-traveling nut 21 which may be utilized, by turning on the lscrew within the yoke, for moving the cam block'and jaw 8 when the device is to be used'as a vise.
' lvllh'en using the tool as a wrench, how-Y ever, the slide sleeve, its yoke and the screw arebodily moved to actuate the slide or cam-block, for moving the jaw 8. The
'sleeve is secured in adjusted position on the shank by means 'of the spring pressed rack plate 22,'which is provided with two pairs ,rack plate may engagethe complementary teeth '4; and 5 on the shank, which it will beV remembered' are disposed inV opposed direc-V tions, and a plate spring 27 on the sleeve is utilized to retain the plate in contact with the'se'teeth. Bv the utilization ofthe opsleeve cannot be moved in either direction` Vwhile the f rack plateA Ais in closed position. Thumb pressure on the rack plate, against posed sets of teeth and the spring', the lrack plate is held rigidly on the shank and the the spring, however, will release the plate and the` sleeve may then be slid along the shank to force the movable jaw toward its fixed jaw, or to separateV the movable jaw from the fixed jaw.
For converting the tool for use as a boring tool I use a lsoluared collar 28'on the squared portion 29 of the threaded shank end, over which thesocket head 30 ofthe crank arm 31 fits, 'and' by means of the handle 32 the tool maybe revolved as a brace for a boring tool. The nut 33 on the end of the shank stem is of usual construction and function.
[Thus the'wrench may be used either for f'its' vcustomary function, or as a pipe wrench, and the tool, through the' operation of the non-traveling nut 21 may be used as a vise; and with a bit orscrew driver clamped between the jaws of the tool, the whole device may" be revolved by means of the handle 31-32 as a brace or screw driver,
From the above description taken in -connection with my drawings it lis apparent that-I have provided a device which is com-v paratively simple in construction and `operation, is compact and'durable, and'may be utilized for various purposes to which` similar tools' are adapted. v v
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination with a fixed and its'laterally projecting guide frame, of a parallel jawmovable in said frame, a longitudinally movable lblock yguided in the frame and having a cam slot therein, a piv-k oted shoe on themovable jaw slidable in said slot, and means for moving said block, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a xed jaw and its laterally projecting' slotted frame, of a movable jaw hav-ing lugs guidedin the slot-v ted frame, a longitudinally movableblock guided in the frame and vprovided with a cam slot, a pivoted shoe on the movable jaw Y guided in said cam slot, and means for moving said block for the purpose described.
3. The combinationin la wrenchwith its fixed jawV and shank and a laterally pro-V jected frame on the jaw, of a bodily movable jaw guided inthe frame, a' longitudinally movable camv member guided in the frame and fiexibly yconnected wit-h 'said' movable j aw, a slide sleeve on the shank rigidly lconneet-ed to said cam member, cofacting rack teeth on the shank and a rack plate on the sleeve, andk means for holding said rack plate and shank in locked position, 'as dev scribed.
4. The combination in a wrench with its fixed jaw and toothed shank, a laterally projected slotted frame on the jaw, and a mjovable jaw in the frame having lugs as described, of a 'longitudinallymovable lcam member 'having an obliquely extending slot i and guided in said frame,'a loose shoe on the movable `jaw guided in lsaid obli'quely extending slot, an open end sleeve movablel on the'shank and connected to said 'ca-rn member, a toothedV rack plate having arms connected with saidV sleeve', and a spring on the sleeve holding said plate in'l adjusted position. f
' v vBERNARD V. AP ELD.
In testimony whereof I afiix my siignature.
