Description
W. 24, w23.. R. J. MGVICKEF@ FOUNTAIN PEN Filed Aug. 20, 1921 ATTORNEY,
Patented Apr. 2d, 1923.
UNITED s'rn'ras nonnn'r i'. nrcvreirnn, on new vonk, n. r.
FOUNTAN Application filed august 20, 1921. Serial No. 493,303.
To all fw lio/mJ t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MCVICKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain lens, oi which the following is a speciiication.
rl`his `invention relates tofountain pens and the principal object is to produce a device of this nature in which the cap normally used to protect the pen point shall be so cond structed that it may be utilized as a pump for filling the barrel of the pen.
Another object is to construct a device of this nature which shall be simple of construction, easy to assemble, cheap to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purpose described.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain n ovel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are l. illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
Figure l is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of my `improved fountain pen.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detached view of the barrel and valve.
Figure 3 is a similar view of the outer cap sleeve.
Figure 4 is a similar-view of the inner cap sleeve. l
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in all views.
Referring),r to the drawing; in detail, 10 represents the barrel of a fountain pen provided near opposite ends with threads 11 and 12. The barrel 10 is also provided with a reduced upper end plus, 13 having a way 14 formed therein, the inner mouth of which is protected by a gauze float basket 15 in which is suspended a cork 0r other float 13. A cap 17 screws down on the portion 13 and has. threaded into its end a valve 13 provided with a by-pass 19 and tapered at its inner end so that it may be screwed into way 111 to completely stop the same.
The cap comprises inner andouter sleeves 2O and 21, respectively. The sleeve 20 is provided with internal threads 22 at its open end, which match threads 11 and 12. The otherend of member 20 is enlarged to form a shoulder 23, and internally threaded at 2() and 21. rllhe upper end Aof sleeve 21 is provided with plup., cap and valve body 31, 32 and 33 having ways 34 and 35 all similar to those for sleeve 20.
ln assembling, the device, the sleeve 2O and its contained parts are first assembled, and then this sleeve complete is pushed down in sleeve 21, and the parts 31, 32 and 33 are put in place. In order to prevent turning of sleeve 21 on sleeve 20 when screwing the cap on or off either end of the barrel, dowel pins 36 on plugy 31 seat themselves in holes formed in member 2G when members 31 and 2b are in juxtaposition.
ln operation, when the pen needs filling, first screw out member 13 far enough to open passage 14s. Then screw cap 20-21 on the threads 12. Dip the pen point in ink and move 21 up relatively to 20 which will draw a charge of ink into the barrel 10. lf desired the relative capacities of the parts may be made such that any desired nuinber of reciprocations of member 21 may be required to illthe barrel. When the barrel is full, float 16 will stop passage 14 and no more ink can be sucked up.
`While l have described what l deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 1. A, `["oui'itain pen comprising a barrel a valve at one end of said barrel, a cap formed of two (zo-operating1 sleeves adapted to be threadedly engaged with either end of said barrel, and valves carried by said cap and operable for effecting suction at said first mentioned valve, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. i fountain pen comprising a barrel, a valve at one end of said barrel, a cap formed of two (zo-operating sleeves, and means whereby movement of one of said sleeves with relation to the other will effect suction cap formed of two (xo-operatingr sleeves inat said valve, as and for the purpose set oluding means fol` pumping a charge of ink 10 forth. into said barrel, and means in said barrel 3. A fountain pen comprising a barrel, a for stopping;r further pumpingr of ink when 5 cap formed of two co-operating sleeves, and said barrel is fully charged.
(3o-operative Valves in said barrel and In testimony whereof I have aixed my sleeves. signature.
4. A fountain pen comprising a barrel, a ROBERT J. MGVICKER.
