DEPOSITING METHOD FOR MASSES OF SAND AND GRAVEL OBTAINED IN BROWN- COAL OPEN 0V0RKINGS.
Application filed January 22, 1921. Serial No. 439,274.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. I, 1313.)
To a? Z '20 7mm it may 00% earn:
Be it known that I, VILHELM lVnnnn, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at \Viesbaden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Deposit ing Method for the Masses of Sand and Gravel Obtained in Brown-Coal Open lVorkings (for which I have obtained in Germany a patent, No. 311,544, dated 28th of March, 1918), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the deposition of masses of sand and gravel produced in brown-coal open workings and carried away by water.
The invention has for its object to form first by the waste material a dam which shuts the dumping site off the browncoal open working and to deposit afterwards the sand and gravel carried away by water at the end of the dumping site which is farthest away from said dam. r he dumping site is traversed by channels covered by brushwood designed to retain the sand and gravel so that the water can collect in the channels to be conducted to the main chan nel which surrounds the site.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, I shall hereinafter describe the same with reference to the form of construction shown by way of example onthe accompanying drawing, wherein 2- Fig. l is a plan view of the dumping site.
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sections on lines 22, 4l4- respectively of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3.
The part of the old workings or the dumping site to be utilized for the deposition of the waste material is fenced at the side turned towards the open workings with a double walled boarding (1 and 3). These boardings are covered at the side turned towards the dumping site with a lining of wire netting or of sack cloth designed to separate the sand from the water by filtering. The two walls of the boarding are 2-3 meters distant the one from the other.
In the interval between the two walls of the boarding, 23 meters apart from each other, filter doors 6 are arranged which are of the same height as the boardings and consist of plaited brush wood sustained and connected with the boardings by means of lateral poling boards. The number of filter doors depends on the size of the dam to be formed.
Under each filter door 6 a ditch 11 is provided which is designed to receive the water. These ditches are connected outside the fence (at the side of the open workingsl with the main ditch 10 which goes along two sides of the dumping site. At the inner parts the ditches 11 branch off to a ditch system which extends over the deepest parts of the whole dumping site. The ditches 11 are covered by brushwood plaiting or by boardings 12 with wire netting 1.3.
The arrangements just described are shown in the drawing and by the sections 22 and 4-4.
The working method is as follows The dumping site is prepared after the manner described, whereupon the flushing conduit through which the sand and gravel is carried in water and which branches oif from the main at f is placed upon the filter doors between the two walls of the boarding so that it reaches to the end of the same. The waste sand and gravel now flow out of the conduit 9 into the farthest division until the interval between the walls is completely filled by a dam of uniform width throughout, whereupon the next fol lowing division is filled up in the same manner. Only after in this manner a dam has been produced the discharge on the dumping site is started at point 9. This point 9 is as distant as possible from the dam. The material floods the site and the water which has served for conveying the material separates from the sand in filtering through the covers 12-12 into the ditches 11 through which it flows into the main ditch 10.
The characteristic features of the invention consist in producing a dam between the dumping site and the open workings by the waste material which is conducted between a double walled boarding in which a channel for the water is provided which filters out of the material and further in separating the water from the solid material as soon as the mixture arrives upon the dumping site so that the pressure from the dumped masses is kept back from the dam, this purpose being ttained by theditch sys tem. The ditches serve also to ensure the draining of the field after the same has been completed.
, I claim:
An improvedamethod for depositing the masses of sand and gravel obtained in brown-coal open workings consisting in conducting the mixture of sand, gravel and water coming from the open working first between two boardingsstanding at a de termined distance the one from the other and extending between the open workings and the dumping site so that a'high dam of sand and gravel is erected between the boardings, whereupon the mixture of sand, gravel and water is conducted to a point of the field which is situated at a large distance from the dam so that the Water has separated from the solid admixtures long before the deposited material reaches the dam and in draining the dumping site of the water by means of ditches arranged at the lowest parts of the flushing field.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILHELM EBER.
