FLUME.
Application filed November 3, 1922. Serial No. 598,829.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Go'r'rLInB MUEHLEISEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alma, in the county of Buffalo and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flumes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for carrying water or other fluids or material down a steep incline, the general object of the invention being to provide means for preventing undermining of the banks at the head of the incline and stopping head and soil erosion.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the parts that there is no obstruction to catch ice, or dbris.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is an elevation.
Figure 3 is a view of the head end.
Figure 4.- is a fragmentary perspective of the modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is an end elevation of the construction disclosed in Figures 1 to 3 inelusive.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional view of the head plate and its foundation.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary detail elevation of the device, and V Figure 8 is a detail perspective of one of the elements employed in the invention.
As shown in these views I form a dam 1 at the head of the gully or incline to catch the water flowing towards the same. This dam is formed of a head plate 1 and the wing plates 2, the plates being supported by the posts 3. The plates have their lower edges embedded in concrete 4 and I prefer to either perforate the plates or attach wire mesh 5 thereto to insure the engagement of the concrete therewith. The first section 6 of the gutter is carried by the plate 1. The wing plates may be of curved formation, as shown in the drawings, or they may be inclined and they are so arranged as to catch the water flowing towards the gutter and to direct it into the first section of the flume. The second section 7 is supported in the gully and, has its upper end underlapping the end of the first section so that the water flowing from the first section will enter the second section. The two sections are not connected together. The third section 8 receives the water from the second section and at the outer end of this third section wire mesh 9 is attached for preventing the water from washing the soil as it leaves the flume. All'the sections are supported by the posts l0vwhich are driven into the soil and are arranged in pairs, the post of each pair being connected by the cross piece 11 to which the uprights 12 are connected by the angle plates 13. These uprights are bolted or riveted to the angle strips 1 1 which are fastened. to the edges of the sections. The posts, uprights and cross pieces are preferably formed of angle iron. By making the second section independent of the first section any settling of the second section will not damage the first section and the dam. The second section is also anchored in place by means of the anchors 15, the cables 16 and turn-buckles 17, the cables being attached to the section bythe plates 18.
I may use the sections without the dam part where a culvert or drain pipe or the like is located, as shown in Figure 4. In this case the flume will carry the water from the culvert or the pipe 19 to a point away from the head end of the gully and thus prevent washing of the bank adjacent the road.
It will be seen that there are no obstructions over the top of the flume to catch floating dbris, ice and the like.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readil apparent.
