Description
C. H. MILLER ET AL AUXILIARY LOCKING BOLT Filed Sept. 1921 2 Shets-Sheet 1 Patented Apr. 24, 1923.
CHARLES HENRY MILLER AND ALEXANDER N. SCOTT,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE DIEBOLD SAFE & LOCK COMPANY, OF CANTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
AUXILIARY LOCKING BOLT.
Application filed September 9, 1921.
To (:77 207107215! may concern:
Be it known that we. CHARLnsH. MILLER and ALEXANDER N. Scor'r, citizens of the Ilnited States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Locking Bolts. of'which the following is a specification.
The invention relates'to auxiliary locking means for doors of safety deposit boxes and the like, designed to be effective when the ordinary lock is removed or displaced from its normal position upon the door; and the object of the improvement is to provide fixed means on the lock normally engaging spring actuated bolts in the door in retracted position, which will inevitably release the bolts for operation when the ordinary lock is displaced from normal position.
a A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door of a safety deposit box, with parts broken away to show the location of auxiliary lock 7 ing bolts therein;
Fig. 2. a fragmentary perspective view showing the hinge end of the door;
Fig. 3. a perspective view of the hinge bracket detached from the door frame;
Fig. at, a plan section on line IVIV,
Fig. 1. showing the auxiliary locking bolts retracted in the door; and
Fig. 5, a similar section with the ordi nary lock removed. showing the auxiliary locking bolts in action.
Similar numerals refer to like parts throughout the drawings.
The door 1 of. a safety deposit box 2 0 may be hung by a hinge plate 3 secured to one end of the door and a hinge plate 4 secured to the corresponding side frame of the box; the hinge plate on the door being provided with a flange 3 adapted to engage behind the hinge plate on the frame to lock these parts together-when the door is closed, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The ordinary lock 5 is secured to the inner side of thedoor as by means of bolts 6, and is provided with a bolt 7 adapted to be engaged for lockin the door n the socket 8 in the wall of t e box opposite the hinged end of the door. and to be unlocked by means of a master key entered through i a barrel 9 and a special key entered through Serial No. 499,392.
a barrel 10, extending forward through the body of the door. in usual .manner.
Two auxiliary locking bolts 11 and 11 are preferably located in guide bores 12 and 12 formed in the body of the door, one bolt being arranged to protrude from the swinging end of the door and the other bolt to protrude from the hinged end of the door,-
a suitable socket 13 being provided in one wall of the box for receiving the One bolt,
the ordinary lock 5, and extending outward through suitable apertures 16 and 16 in the wall of the door so as to engage in sockets or recesses in the sides of the auxiliary bolts. which may be in the form of annular grooves 17 and 17', as shown in Figs. 4
v and 5.
It is evident that if the case of the ordinary lock 5 is removed from normal position, as by hammering a punch on the key 95 barrels or otherwise breaking or stripping the securing bolts 6. the resulting displacement of the pins 15 and 15' inevitably releases the auxiliary bolts, which will automatically engage in their respective sockets and securely lock both the swinging end and the hinged end of the door, as shown in Fi 5.
1. A spring actuated auxiliary locking bolt on a safety deposit box door or'the like and having a recess therein, an ordinary lock secured to the door and having means fixed thereon normally engaging in the re- (PS8 to hold th bolt in retracted position and arranged to release the bolt when the lock is displaced.
2. A spring actuated auxiliary locking bolt on a safety deposit box door or the like and having arecess therein, an ordinary lock secured to the door and having a fixed pin thereon normally engaging in the re- :css to hold the bolt in retracted position and arranged to release the bolt when the look is displaced.
recess to hold the auxiliary bolt in retracted A 3. A sprin actuated auxiliary locking bolt on a sa ety deposit door or the like and having an annular groove therein, an ordinary lock secured to the door and having means fixed thereon normally engaging in the annular groove to hold the bolt in retracted position and arranged to release, the bolt when the ordinary lock is displaced.
4:. A safety deposit box or the like, a door hinged to one side Wall and a bolt socket in the opposite side Wall of the box, an ordinary lock secured to the door, a spring actuated auxiliary locking bolt on the door having a recess therein, and means fixed on th ordinary lock normally engaging in the position and. arranged to release the bolt to enter the socket when the ordinary lock is displaced.
5. A door hinged at one end to a safety deposit box or the like, an ordinary lock secured to the door, spring actuated auxiliary locking bolts on the ends of the door each having a recess therein, sockets in the box for receiving the bolts, and means fixed on the ordinary lock normally engaging in the recesses to retract the bolt and arranged to release them when the lock is displaced.
6. A safety deposit box door or the like having a guide bore therein, a spring actuated auxiliary locking bolt in the bore having a recess therein, an ordinary lock secured to the door, and means fixed on the ordinary lock normally engaging in the recess to hold the auxiliary bolt in retracted position and arranged to release the bolt When the ordinary lock is displaced.
