This invention relates to door locking and opening and closing devices, particularly for sliding doors of railway house cars.
It is an object of thisinvention to provide locking and opening and closing devices for sliding doors which shall be compact, eliminate parts, reduce weight, and obtain a savings in cost of the devices and of their application.
- A further object is to provide locking and opening and closing devices embodying tapered locking pins wherein said devices are so constructed and arranged as to prevent upward movement of the pins beyond a pre-determined point to prevent shearing of the seals which customarily extend through the pins.
A further object is to-providelocking and opening and closing devices more easily operable from the ground without affecting ease of operation from a platform.
A further object is to provide locking andopening and closing devices for sliding doors embodying members engageable :to impart opening and closing movements to the doors which shall be disengaged when the doors are locked to avoid wear between said members.
A-further object isto provide locking and opening and closing devices for sliding doors embodyin a lock bracket carrying a lever and a tapered pin wherein the lever is constructed .to engage and position .a locking member for locking engagement with the pin and cooperate with the pin to prevent upward movement thereof beyond a pre-determined point.
Other objects .of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.

In the drawings, a door fragmentarily illustrated for the purpose of describing the invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral l0. Thedoor is of well known construction and embodies a metallic panel H formed with a plura'lity of spaced horizontal corrugations l2 and vertical corrugations, one of which is shown at '3, adjacent to the front vertical edges of the door. Each of the corrugations I3 is spanned bymeans'of a bridging plate M which is fastened to the panel l'l on opposite sides of the corrugat'ion. "Reinforcement of the front vertical margin of the door is obtained by means of a member shown in the form of a channelhaving unequal legs and secured to the marginal portion of the door as by means of rivets passing through the web of the channel.
A portion of the side 16 of a railway house car H adjacent to and associated with the front vertical margin of the door 10 is illustrated. The car side embodies a front door post l8 illustrated fragmentarily and a front stop member IQ for the door ll]. The stop member I9 is spaced from the door post 18 so as to receive the metallic sheathingffll, these elements being secured together as by means of rivets 21. 'The stop member t9 embodies a recess 22 adapted to receive the 80' front marginal portion of the door when it is closed.
With a door of the type illustrated, the hasp fastener 23 of the lock is mounted upon one of the horizontal corrugations l2 and is secured thereto "by a plurality of rivets 24 which pass through and secure a reinforcement 25 for the hasp fastener disposed within the corrugation 12. The hasp fastener is providedwith a neck portion 26, the free end 21 of which extends through the crest of the'vertical' corrugation l3 and through the portion of the hasp fastener reinforcement 25 which is disposed within the vertical corrugation.
The hasp fastener 23 swingably supports a hasp 28 whichjis provided with an eye 29 through which the haspfastener extends. The hasp 28 is formed with a pin receiving housing 30 beyond which a verticalwail 3i of the hasp extends. A recess 32 is formed in the wall 3| in such a manner as to provide abutments 33 and 34. A wall 35 extends outwardly from the wall 3| and is formed with an opening 36 adapted to receivea padlock (not shown) A look bracket 31 is secured as by means of riveting to the side wall 16 of the car adjacent with the hasp 28. 1 J
Spaced flanges 4! and 42 extend forwardly from the lower lock bracket housing 39. These flanges receive a pin 43 upon which a lever 44 is swingably supported. A lug 45 extends forwardly from the lever for a purpose which will hereinafter appear and a finger 45 extends rearwardly from the lever for the purpose hereinafter explained.
Fig. 1 of the drawings illustrates ,the'door in closed and locked position. In this position the locking pin 40 extends through the alined housings in the lock bracket and the hasp so that looking engagement with the hasp is established. In the event that the door is not fully closedat this time, it will'be apparent that movement in closing direction can occur and that upon such movement the hasp will be disengaged from the pin-which will automatically be lowered so as to re-establish locking engagement with the hasp and absorb the tolerance provided by the closing movement of the door. In the closed and locked position of the door, as more clearly appears from Fig. 3 of the drawings, the vertical wall 3| of the hasp lies inwardly of the lever lug 45 so that the lug is not engaged'in the recess 32 of the hasp and the lever hangs vertically from the lock bracket. Swinging of the lever accordingly during the movement of the car will not set up any wear in the lug or the hasp.
By reason of the vertical disposition of the lever 44, the finger 46 on the lever is disposed between the lock bracket and the inner face of the pin 40 as more clearly shown in Fig. of the drawings. This disposition of the finger 46 prevents the pin from moving inwardly toward the bracket and therefore insures maintenance of the seal receiving lug 48'formed on the lower edge of the pin in vertical alinement with the lowerbracket housing 39. Such vertical alinement between the lug 48 and the housing 39 prevents the pin 40 from moving upwardly after contact between the lug andthe housing is established. It is, therefore, impossible for the locking pin to move upwardly to such an extent as to shear the seal (not shown) which-extends through the lug 4B and a flange 49 formed on the lock bracket.
Fig. 2 of the drawings illustrates the position of the parts of the locking and opening and closing device either after the door has been closed by the device or prior to the opening movement of the door by the device. Assuming that the door is to be opened the pin 40 has been withdrawn as shown and the lug 45 on the lever disposed in the recess 32 formed in the hasp wall 3!. This relationship between the lug 45 and the recess 32 is obtained upon outward movement of the hasp so that the recess is positioned to receive the lug when the lever has been swung from its vertical position to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Clockwise movement of the lever at this time will cause the lug 45 to bearagainst the abutment 34 and thereby impart a thrust to the hasp and opening movement to the door. a
In the event the door is partly open and it is desired to move it to closed position by means of the device hereinabove described, the hasp is 4 moved outwardly and the lever swung in clockwise direction to establish engagement between the lever lug 135 and the hasp recess 32. Counterolockwise movement of the lever will then cause the lug 45 to bear against the abutment 33 so as to exert a pull upon the hasp and closing movement upon the door.
It is desired that when closing movement of the door is completed and the lug 45 is engaged in the recess 32 of the hasp, that locking of the door cannot be obtained. This is accomplished by the position of the hasp 30, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, which is so disposed as to prevent the locking pin 40 from being received within the housing members on the hasp and on the lock bracket. In order to lock the door the hasp 30 is moved inwardly toward the lock bracket so as to establish alinement between the housing members 30, 38 and 39 which permits the locking pin to be received within the housings and to be disposed in locking engagement 'with the'hasp. The inward movement of the hasp causes the recess 32 therein to be disengaged from the lug 45, whereupon the lever 44 swings under the action of gravity to a vertical position. This swinging movement of the lever positions the finger 46 between the locking pin 40 and the lock bracket, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and insures that the lug 48 on the pin will lie vertically below the lower housing 39 on the lock bracket, as more clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
It will be apparent that numerous changes and modifications in the details of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such modifications and changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
We claim: i
1. In a device of the character described for sliding doors, a locking member, a bracket, a tapered locking pin slidably carried by said bracket, a lug on said pin, said pin being adapted to have locking engagement with said member, and means on said bracket, said means being adapted to be disposed between said pin and said bracket when said pin is in looking engagement with said member and to engage the inner faceof said pin and insure engagement of said lug with said bracket for preventing upward movement of said pin above a pre-determined position.

In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member and a bracket carrying a vertically slidable locking pin provided with a lug adapted to have locking engagement with said member, the combination comprising a lever pivotally supported by said bracket, said lever being adapted to be engaged with said member and operable to exert a pull upon said member toward locking position, and means on said lever adapted to lie between said pin and said bracket when the pin is in looking engagement with said member.

In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member, a bracket provided with a housing and a tapered locking pin embodying a lug slidable vertically in said housing and adapted to have locking engagement with said member, the combination comprising a shoulder on said member, a lever pivotally supported by said bracket so as to hang vertically, said lever being adapted to be engaged with said shoulder and operable to exert a pull upon said member toward locking position, said member being offset transversely relative to the locking position of said pin when said lever and said shoulder are engaged, said member being movable transversely into position for locking engagement with said pin and to disengage said lever from said shoulder so that said lever falls to vertical position, said pin being received in said housing and said lug lying below said housing when said pin and said member are in looking engagement, and means on said lever engageable with said pin when said lever is vertical and said pin is in looking engagement with said member for maintaining said lug in vertical alinement with said housing, for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member, a bracket provided with a housing and a tapered locking pin embodying an outwardly extending lug slidable vertically in said housing and adapted to have clocking en agement said member, the combinatie omprising-a shonlder-onsaidmemher, a lever p votally s pported by said bracket so as to hangiverticallmsaid lever being adapted to be engaged with -:sa-id -,s:houl;der and operable to exert a pull :upon'said member toward'locking position, said member being ofiset transversely relative to the ,lfifikiilg position of said pin when said lever and said shoulder are engaged, said member being movable transversely into position for locking engagement with said pin and to disengage said ieve-r from said shoulder so that said lever falls to vertical position, said pin being received said housing and said lug lying below said housing when said pin and said member are in docking engagement, and means on said lever lying between said bracket and said pm when said ilever is vertical and said pin is in looking engagement, with said member, said means engaging the ainner face of said pin and maintaining,
saidlug :in vertical alinement with said housing, for the purposeset forth.

In :a device of ithecharacter described for sliding doors having a locking member and a bracket rcarrying a vertically slidable tapered locking pin provided with'a lug, 'the combination comprising a shoulder .on said member, a lever pivotally supported by said bracket so as to hang vertically, a lug on said lever, said lever being adapted to be swung to dispose said lug in engagement with said shoulder and operable to exert a pull upon said member toward locking position, said member being ofiset transversely relative to the locking position of said pin while said lug on said lever is engaged with said shoulder, said member being movable transversely into position for locking engagement with said pin and to disengage said lever lug from said shoulder so that said lever falls to vertical position, and means on said lever lying between said pin and said bracket when said lever is vertical and said pin and said member are in locking engagement.

In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member, a bracket embodying a housing and a tapered locking pin embodying a lug slidable vertically in said housing and adapted to have locking engagement with said member, the combination comprising a shoulder on said member, a lever pivotally supported by said bracket, said lever being adapted to be engaged with said shoulder and operable to exert a pull upon said member toward locking position, said member being offset transversely relative to the locking position of said pin when said lever and said shoulder are engaged, said member being movable transversely into position for locking engagement with said pin and to disengage said lever from said shoulder, said pin being received in said housing and said lug lying below said housing when said pin and said member are in looking engagement, and means on said lever engaging said pin for maintaining said lug in vertical alinement with said housing, for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member, a bracket embodying a housing and a tapered locking pin embodying an outwardly extending lug slidable verticall in said housing and adapted to have locking engagement with said member, the combination comprising a shoulder on said member, a lever pivotally supported by said bracket, said lever being adapted to be engaged with said shoulder and operable to exert a pull upon said member toward lockin position, said pin being 7. received in said'housing and said lug lying below said housing when said pin and said member are in locking engagement, and means on said lever lying between said bracket and said pin when said pin is in looking engagement with said memher, said means engaging the inner face of said pin and maintaining said lug in vertical alinement with said housing, for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member and a bracket carrying a vertically slidable tapered looking pin provided with a lug and adapted to have locking engagement with said member, the combination comprising a lever pivotally supported by said bracket and adapted to be engaged with said locking member and operable to exert a pull thereon, means on said bracket adapted to'be' engaged by said lug on said pin to limit upward movement of said pin, and means on said lever adapted to be disposed between said pin and said bracket when said door is locked and to engage the inner face of said pin and insure engagement of said lug with said means on said bracket.
13. In a device of the character described for sliding doors having a locking member and a bracket carrying a vertically slidable tapered locking pin provided with a lug and adapted to have locking engagement with said member, the
