latter carrying means for insuring alinement between seal receiving slots formed in the pins and pin supports.
A further object is to provide locks embodying supports for locking elements which supports shall be more firmly united with the doors upon which they are mounted and which shall be so associated with relatively sturdy reinforcing members on said doors Vas to further said union.V
Other objects o'f the invention-will become clear as the description Athereof proceeds.
In the drawings forming part of this specication: l
Figure 1 is a 1 fragmentary Velevation .illustrating a lock embodying' `the instant invention.
Figure 2is a horizontal section taken 'on line 2-2 of Figure 1. e l
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 ofFigure1.`y Y
In the drawing the lock embodying the instant invention is illustrated as applied to the double doors of a railway house car. The lock is applicable as well with some modiiication in the structure of the lock bracket, which'` is well known, to railway house cars utilizing single doors, As illustrated, the lock embodies a locking bracket I0 secured by means of rivets II to a horizontal corrugation I2 with which the door projection 24 adapted to cooperate with the locking pin I9 for the purpose hereinafter disclosed.
The locking pin'I9 as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing is tapered. The straight side 25 ofthe said pin is adapted to Abear against the adjacent sides of thehousing members I'I and I8. The opposed side ofthe pin isinclined downwardly as indicated at 26. rIfhis side of thepin,"more over,` isinclined obtuselyrelative'to the rear face.
of theY pin as indicated at 27. Thepin' is provided' with a seal receiving s lot 28 whichvis alined with the seal receiving slot 23 on the lock bracket I0 when the pinfis inits operative position.
l A tell-tale 'in the 'form of a lug' 29 is formed on the lock bracket which additionally is provided with a padlock receiving opening formed in the reinforcing rib 3'I. y .Y
The lock embodies also a hasp fastener 32 secured by'means of rivets 33 upon a horizontal corrugation '34 'which may Vbe formed in the metallic panel 35 of the main door 36 of a double door construction. The hasp fastener` 32 'is formedr with a gooseneck 3l, Vthe-"free end 38 vof which projects 'through `a vertical' corrugation 39' which maybe formed in the panel adjacent to thefverticalmargin thereof and through a lhasp fastener'reinforcement 49 secured' to the inside ofthe horizontal corrugation 341by means of the rivets 33. This end of the neck of the hasp fastener is rigidly secured as by means' of welding 4I to the rhasp fastener reinforcement, The portion of the hasp fastener reinforcement through which the neck of the hasp fastener extends is panel I3 of the auxiliary door I4 may be provided. Y
posed faces 29 and 2| of the housing members I'I and I8 diverge outwardly for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The lock bracket is provided with a verticalVV flange 22 formed with a seal receiving slot 23. Additionally the lock bracket is formed with a disposed within the Vertical corrugation 39 so as' to abut the outermost' wall of the corrugation., The metallic panel 35 is provided with a plane marginal portion 42 reinforced by means of aL substantially 'channel shaped member 43, the' leg 44 of which is spaced from the outer wall of the vertical corrugation 39. Within this space a metallic filler 45 is disposed and fastened as by means of welding to the leg 44 and the outer wall of the vertical corrugation 39 so as to constitute a backing member for thev hasp fastener reinforcement 40. 1
A hasp -or locking member 49 is swingably carried by the hasp fastener. The hasp is'formed with an aperture 41 defined by the front' andl rear walls 48' and 49 Yand by the side walls 50 and 5I. `The side wall 50 is inclined similarly tothe intion to receive a seal. The hasp isalso provided with an opening 53 adapted to be alined with the opening 30 in the operative position of the hasp for the purpose of receiving a padlock if desired.
To lock the doors I4 and 36 together the hasp 46 is disposed between the housing, members I'I and I8 of the lock bracket I0. The pin I9 is thenk slidably received. within the housing members I'I CFL and I8v and extends through the aperture 41 y formed in the hasp.' The structure ofthe hasp is such that the pin is completely embraced by the walls of the hasp'dening the aperturewso'- as to obviate bending` and distortion of thepin heretofore encountered. The inclined vside 26 of the pin and the inclined wall 50 of the hasp are in engagement and the straight side of the bracket adapted to be secured to a relatively stationary member, a tapered locking pin slidably mounted on said lock bracket, a locking member adapted to be mounted upon a door slidably associated vwith said relatively stationary member,
said locking member including connected front, side and rear Walls dening an aperture, one of said side walls and a side of said pin being similarly inclined, said pin extending through said aperture when said locking member and pin are Y operatively associated and being completely emff, braced by said walls, the inclined side of said pin abutting Asaid inclined side Wall and the other Y side of said pin abutting said lock bracket, the
pin abuts the adjacent straight sides of the housing. In its operative position the projection 24 engages the rear face of the locking pin thereby insuring alinement between 4the seal receiving slots'23 and 28 and protection of the seal against shearing. 4'It is clear that in the event the main and -auxiliary doors are not iny contact, movement of the main door in opening direction is precluded and movement of the main door in closing direction will cause automatic lowering of the pinunderaction of gravity sofas to' reestablish engagement between the pin, the Wall 50 andthe a Welding of the free end of the neck ofthe hasp fastener to the hasp` fastener reinforcementpref vents pulling; out of this end.y Moreovenpossible shifting of the jhasp and 'haspfastener toward the adjacent end of the door 36 is obviated byv the utilization ofthe'ller 4,5 Vand the strength of the front edge reinforcement 43. t The outward divergenceof the opposed faces inclined side of said pin and said inclined wall being obtuse to said rear wall, said pin 4being biased downwardly by the action of gravity for the purpose set forth.
3. In a railway car having a door embodying a metallic panel formed with a vertical corrugation adjacent to a vertical margin of said panel and provided with a marginal stiifener spaced from said corrugation, a hasp fastener having a gooseneck secured to the outside of said panel, a hasp fastener reinforcement secured to the inside'of said panel, the free end of said neck extending through said panel and said hasp fastener'rein-- said hasp yfastener reinforcement forcement, abutting saidcorrugation, andr meansin alinement with said reinforcement disposed between and abutting said corrugation and said marginal stiffener for the purpose set forth.
4. In a railway car having'a door embodying a metallic panel providedwith an outwardly ex' of the housing members I7 Vand f I8 precludes binding' of thephasp between these -walls Vupon relative verticalmovement'of the'doors4 I4 and 36. In this' manner bending of the Y hasp is avoided.;- l V It will be apparent that numerous changes and modifications in the details-of the invention willbe clearto those 'skilled in they art. It is vintended, therefore, that all such modifications andV changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited' only byV the scope, of the claims'appended hereto. r `WeclaIn: I
