Description

'Apr. 17, 1923.,
F. LA CHAPELLE ROLL CLEANER Filed Dec. 12, 1921 INVENTOR NK LAC/[APELLE ATTORNEY atented Apr. 1?, 1923.
a TES FRANK LA CHAPELLE, OF PIT'ISFIELD. MASSACHUSETTS.
ROLL CLEANER.
Application filed December 12, 1921.
10 vices for use in cleaning dirt, lint, grease and similar substances from the rolls of a spinning jack and it contemplates the provision of a base and two contact wheels mounted on a pivot-axle, and operated by a coil spring and levers to insure a close contact between the one wheel on the pivot-axle and the one roll on a spinning jack.
In many instances the rolls on a spinning jack are cleaned by hand necessitating con- 20 siderable labor and time.
The main object of my invention is, therefore, the simplicity of operation required to clean the spinning jack rolls.
A still further object of my invention pc- 25 culiar to my roll cleaner which will be apparent by reference to the drawings is that the said roll cleaner is simple and inexpensive in construction and well adapted to withstand the usage to which such devices are ordinarily subjected.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the roll cleaner showing, one of the contact wheels on the pivot-axle, in contact with one of the spinning jack rolls, which are represented by the dotted circles 16.
Figure 2 is an elevation showing the device as applied to the spinning jack rolls, and the position of the contact wheel on the pivot-axle in contact with the one roll of the spinning jack, which is shown by the dotted circle 16.
1 is a base composed of spring steel and turned up on the ends to form a semi-circle, and equipped with a felt padS which is in contact with the spinning-jack rolls 16. The base is also equipped with a pivot-axle 2 fastened to the base 1 by a pin 12 and free to operate in opposite directions. On the pivotaxle are mounted two contact wheels 3 which Serial No. 521,962.
are free to rotate when in contact with the spinning jack roll 16.
The under side or" the base 1 is equipped with levers and 4. These two levers are connected by a pin 13 which passes thru the lever 5 which is provided with a slot 18 to insure the free operation of the levers i and 5. The levers 4 and 5 are connected to the base 1 by the pins and 12 and separated from the base 1 by the washers 6 and 11.
The levers a and 5 are also connected by a coil spring 7 which is fastened at one end to the pin 9 and at the other end to the pin 10.
Having described the construction of my invention the operation is as follows:
The rolls 16 are the fixed rolls of the spinning jack. The roll 17 is a short roll that can be removed at will from contact with the rolls 16, is a spool on which is wound the yarn 14: which consists of many ends. 'The yarn ends 14 pass over the rolls 16 and under the roll 17, and in so doing there is more or less dirt, lint and grease deposited on the rolls 16.
The lever 5 is brought to a position, on the center line, which is shown on the plan view, this position of the lever 5 places the contact wheels 3 in a neutral position. lVhen in the neutral position the roll cleaner is pressed up and against the rolls 16 from the underside of the rolls. The tension in the base 1 allows the ends of the base 1 to pass over the rolls 16 and bring the felt pad 8 in contact with the rolls 16. When in this position the lever 5 may be moved either to the right or the left. When the lever 5 is moved in either direction and passes over the center line, shown on the plan view, the lever 4 at the extreme end passes in an opposite direction over the center line on the plan view and the spring 7 causes the pivot-axle to turn on its axis about the pin 12 and bring the contact wheel 8 in contact with thespinning jack roll 16.
As the rolls 16 turn in the direction of the arrows the contact wheel 3 revolves and carries the base 1 and the felt pad 8 along the rolls thereby removing all dirt, lint and grease from the rolls 16. When the roll cleaner reaches the ends of the rolls 16, the lever 5 may be reversed in an opposite direction and the roll cleaner will run back over the rolls 16, thus, keeping them free from dirt, lint and grease as long as the spinning jack is in operation.
Having thus described my invention, What is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the class described the combination with a base, brushes attached to the base, contact Wheels axiallyand pivotally mounted on the base, actuating levers pivotally connected to the base and to the contact Wheel axle, a spring connected to said levers to control and actuate said levers and contact Wheels.
2. In a device of the class described the combination With a base provided with openings in the bottom for the contact Wheels, said base semi-circularly formed on the ends with brushes attached to the semi-circular ends of the base, a contact Wheel axle pivotallyconnected to the base, contact Wheels mounted on said axle, a spring and levers to control and actuate; said contact Wheels so as to carry the base in a reverse direction. In a device of the class described the combination with a base semi-circnlarly formed on the ends With brushes attached thereto, contact Wheels axially and pivotally connected to the base and so connected as to operate at opposite angles when in contact with the spinning jack roll, actuating levers pivotally connected to the base and to the contact Wheelasle, a springto operate'said actuating levers and contact wheels so as to carry the base in a reverse direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
F 223N1 1 LA CHAPELLE.
