To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. VAN
METER, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of New Orleans, in theparish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing or Bufling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in polishing or bufiing devices.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character of the rotar type which is simple in construction; which is light and durable, and which is particularly adapted to be easily manipulated for changing brushes to be used in different kinds of work, or to be used for obtaining different grades of polishing or bufling of the same material.
Other objects, and objects relating to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by ample in the accompanying which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of the device with the outer end of handle in full lines.
Figure 2 is a partial end elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a group view of the switch mounted in handle.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, C indicates generally a casing and in which there is mounted the motor M, its shaft extending longitudinally of the casing. At H is generally indicated the handle for holding the device, and at B the rotary brush or buffer.
The casing C consists in the conical-shaped portion 10, the cylindrical body portion 11 and the end portion 12 which is formed with a protrusion 13 adapted to serve as a bearing for one end of the spindle S. The other end of the spindle S is supported in the free end of the conical portion 10, said conical portion being reinforced at this point as at 14, and this reinforced portion being provided with an oil opening 15 whereby the shaft S- may be lubricated. Also the protrusion 1.3 of the casing portion 12 is provided with an oil hole as at 16 for lubricating the associated end of the shaft S. The motor M may be either a direct current motor or an alternating current motor. In this instance it is rawings, in
way of exshown as being of the former ype and its field housing 16 is formed upon the inner Wall of the casing C. The commutator of the motor is indicated at 17 and the brushes therefor may be properly mounted in the walls of the casing O. The casing is formed with a nipple 17 adapted for receiving the inner end of the tubular handle H. Extending through said handle is a cord 19 which may supply the motor M with electric current. This cord consists in the two wires 19 and 20. The wire 19 is connected at its inner end to a spring finger 21 by the meansof a screw 22. The spring finger is held from the handle H by a suitable block 23. The block may be secured to the handle H in any preferred manner. The wire 20 is connected in turn to one bruslr of motor M and the other brush of the motor is connected to a spring finger 21' which is supported by the block 23, by a wire 22'. Slidable transversely through the handle H is a fiber block 18 which is substantially rectangular in shape and has formed upon its one side a projection 18, its other edge being formed with the notches 24 and 25. The projection 18 carries a metal strip 20 which is'adapted to electrically connect the fingers 21 and 21.
Within the casing there is fulcrumed a lever 26, said lever being fulcrumed by the means of a pin 27 extending through apertured ears 28 formed upon the inner wall of the casing. The lever 26 terminates at its forward end in a head 30 which is adapted to be brought into frictional engagement with a fiber collar 31 secured upon the shaft S. Also within the casing there is secured a spring finger 32 by the means of rivets 33 which is adapted to press against the head 30 of the lever 26 and normally hold the same in engagement with the collar 31.- The other end of the lever 26 is formed with an offset portion 34 which has its free end rounded, as shown, and adapted to be brought to engage in either of the notches 24 or 25 of the block 18.
The buffer or polisher B consists in a stem 35 which is hollow and terminates at one end in a plate-flange 36 which is circular in shape. Upon the portion of stem adjacent the flange 36 there is positioned a plurality of disks 37 which form the polishing element. These disks may be made into a single and solid unit if desired. Also there is provided a plate washer 38 which is positioned against the innermost disk 37;
and upon the stem 28 there is threaded a nut 39 adapted to clamp the disks 37 together. The ,disks 37 may be made of cloth or any other material which is desired. The end portion 40 of the stem 35 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed longitudinally extending slots 41 which are ada ted to receive the ends of the pin 42 exten ing through the associated end of the shaft S.
As readily seen the buffer B may quickly and easily slipped from the shaft S and another substituted.
In the use of the present invention, when it is desired to start the' motor M, the fiber block 18 is moved to bring the end 34 of the lever 26 into the notch 24. With this occurring the head 30 of the lever 21 will be withdrawn from the fiber collar 31. Also, the strip 20' will engage the spring fingers 21 and 21 to close the circuit through the motor M. The motor will immediately start and rotate the shaft S which in turn Wlll rotate the buffer B. If it is desired to change the buffer B or to stop quickly for some other reason,-then the block 18 is moved to bring the associated end of the lever 26 into notch 25 and with this occurring the head 30 of lever 26 engages the collar 31 and simultaneously therewith the strip 20 is withdrawn from the spring fingers 21 and 21". In this position of the lever the current through the motor is stopped and also abrake is applied for bringing the motor to an abrupt stop. The buffer may be now quickly detached from the shaft S and a new one substituted, and the motor started as heretofore described.
l claim 1. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a motor therein having a shaft extending theretrom and through the casing, a lever mounted upon the inner wall of said casing, a collar carried by said shaft adapted to be engaged by the one end of said lever, a handle for said casing, and means carried by said handle adapted to be manipulated for causing the lever to engage or disengage said collar upon the shaft for the purpose described.

A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a motor mounted within the casing and having a shaft extending therefrom and through the walls of the casing, a butler carried upon the outer end of said shaft, a collar of friction material car: ried upon said shaf and disposed within the caslng, a lever fulcrumed upon the inner wall of the casing and having its one end adapted to engage the collar, a spring adapted to normally cause saidend of the lever to engage the collar, and means whereby the lever may be manually moved against the bev wrath ing, a buffer carried upon the outer end of said'shaft, a collar of friction material carried upon said shaft and disposed within the casing, a lever 'fulcrumed upon the inner wall of the casing and having its one end adapted to engage the collar, a spring adapted to normally cause said end of the lever to engage the collar, and'means carried by said handle adapted to be-operated for causing the lever to disengage said collar carried by the shaft.

A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a motor therein having a. shaft extending therefrom and through the casing, a lever mounted upon the inner wall of sa casing, acollar carried by said shaft adapted to be engaged by the one end 4 of said lever, a handle formed upon the easing, a block slidably carried by said handle, and connecting means between said block and lever whereby the lever may be caused to disengage said collar upon the shaft.

A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a motor therein having a shaft extending therefrom and through the casing, a lever mounted upon the inner wall of said casing, a collar carried by said shaft adapted to be enga ed by the one end of said lever, a handle formed upon the casing, a block slidable upon said handle, connecting means between said block and lever whereby the lever may be caused to disengage said eollar upon the shaft, and means also operable on adefinite movement of said block to simultaneously close an electric circuit through the motor upon releasing the collar upon said shaft.
6. in a device of the character described, an electric motor, a movable switch element adapted to be operated for closing an electric circuit through the motor, and means whereby upon said switch element being moved to discontinue the electric circuits through said motor a brake-will be automatically applied to said motor. a
