MAnIoiiRE DEVICE.
Application'filed. March 2, 1922. Serial No. 540,467.
To all 'LUhOW'b'it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL SnnnN'n, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Youngstown, county of Mahoning, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manicure Devices, of which the following is. a specification, theprinciple of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention relates to a manicure device comprising a small thimble in which is mounted means for polishing, cleaning and filing the nail, the whole device being small enough to be readily carried in a pocket or the like, and being so arranged that it may be easily used. The bufiing and cleaning means are mounted within the thimble in such a manner that the device automatically ada ts itself to fingers of different sizes and t e whole device is conveniently and readily assembled. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, butone of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexeddrawingz I Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the thimble taken on the line 1-1 of Figs. 1 and 3 and looking in the direction away from the cleaning device; Fig.2 is a central horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. a is a sectional view of the detail showing the cleaning device taken on the line a d of Fig. 3.
The present device consists of an outer casing or thimble 2 which is provided on the inside, as shown in Fig. 1, with a curved plate 3 having a down-turned flange 4 around its edges, this plate being attached to the inner surface of thethimble by means of two flat springs 5 which are riveted as at 6 to the plate and to the thimble. This plate is provided within'the finages with a bufiing pad 7 which is thicker than the of a spring 8 pinned or riveted to the plate 3, the forward end of the spring being curved down within the thimble arid backward toward the open end of the thimble, and this end of the spring is provided with a file and cleaner consisting ofan arcuate member 9 having at its center a pointed end 10 with a fairly sharp upper edge 11 adapted to enter under the nail to clean the same, and this arcuate member is also provided with a groove 12 to receive the outer edge of the nail, the groove being provided with a series of file teeth 13 so as tofile the nail as the member is moved back and forth across the same. This same action both cleans and files at onetime. As shown, this device is mounted at the right hand edge of the plate looking from the open end of the thimble, and is therefore not used when thenail is being buffed, but is used separately without the buffer having any action.
By means of the spring mounting for the buffer, the open space in the thimble below the bufier will be small enough to enable the buffer to contact a normally small finger, and the buffer can be raised against the action of the spring to receive fingers which are larger, andthe space between the plate in its normal position and the top of the thimble is sufiicient to. allow the device to be used for anormal range of size of fingers. The spring which carries the cleaning and filing member is sufficiently resilient to allow this member to be engaged with the nail so that the cleaning and filing actions I may readily take place.
This manicure implement is small enough to be readily carried in a pocket or in a. small purse, being less than an inch and onehalf long and about an inch in greatest diameter, and the thimble proper will be made of any suitable material such as steel or silver, and if made of steel, it will be nickelplated, or silver or gold-plated, in
the parts of the device may be readily assembled and are secured against accidental detachment.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be eni iloyed'instead of the one erqitained change being made as regards the incchanisinherein dcsclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stat-ed means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my intention:-
l. In a manicure device the combination of a thimblc, and a curved butting padresiliently mounted therein.
2. In a manicure device, the combination of a thimble a curved butting pad mounted therein and a resiliently mounted cleaning and filing member below said pad.
In a manicure device, the combination of a thinible, a curved butling pad resiliently mounted therein and a resiliently mounted cleaning and filing member below said pad.
4. In a manicure device the combination of a tliinible, a curved plate springs attached to said plate and thimble to resiliently space said plate from the interior of said thiinble, and a butting pad mounted on said plate.
5. In a manicure device, the combination of a thimble, a curved plate springs attached to said plate and thimble to resiliently space said plate from the interior of said thinible, a butting pad mounted on said plate, and a curved spring attached to said plate and carrying a nail cleaningand filing member.
Signed by me this 28th day of February, 1922.
